The New Year—2017—will soon arrive. You better be prepared by picking up your St. Thomas of Villanova Parish calendar. They are available at the doors of Church today in either the English or Polish languages. Special thanks to the Bob Smith family and Smith-Corocoran Funeral Home for the gift of these calendars. There is an American saying that says—”Figures Don’t Lie!” The figures for our “To Teach Who Christ Is” Campaign tell us the story of your generosity. Our given Campaign goal is $1,940,000.00. As of yesterday, our total pledged dollar amount is $1,905,570.00. That means we need only $34,430 to meet our goal. Your generosity is self-evident. We are grateful to all who have already pledged. Today is our final commitment weekend for our “To Teach Who Christ Is” Campaign. I hope that if you did not make a pledge previously, you did today. We need every parish family to participate in our campaign endeavor to be sure that the message of Jesus Christ continues to be alive here and in the Archdiocese of Chicago.

OPLATKI As we prepare ourselves during this season of Advent, we remember the tradi onal custom of sharing the Christmas wafer or Oplatki. ON PROPHETIC PASSAGES, THE TRAVELING BEAR, & ADVENT

Were I a scripture scholar, I’d probably write the column this week about the powerful message (“The Lord himself will give you this sign: the virgin shall conceive, and bear a son, and shall name him Emmanuel”) spoken in today’s first reading by the prophet Isaiah, who lived some 700 years before Christ, to Ahaz, the King of Judah. I’d frame the column by comparing this prophe c passage to--and then contras ng it with--the words wri en by the Evangelist Ma hew in today’s Gospel as he tells of Christ’s birth (“…All this took place to fulfill what the Lord had said through the prophet: Behold, the virgin shall conceive and bear a son, and they shall name him Emmanuel, which means ‘God is with us’).” As I’ve wri en many mes in this space, though, I’m not a scripture scholar, so let me just tell you instead about the li le orange Beanie Baby bear in my wife’s car. For starters, Gail did not choose either. The car came to her when her mother died over five years ago now. By proclivity or geography or some combina on of the two, the executor-of-the-estate task fell to Gail, and her siblings were happy to let her do it. No wonder, because she spent a lot of me on the task. And somewhere over those many months, the family decided that Shirley-Mom’s 2006 Matrix should go to Gail for her service. I found the orange bear in the Golf-Mil parking lot last December. Gail had driven us to the mall and the bear looked lonely, so I put it on the dashboard of her Matrix at the base of the front windshield all the way over on the passenger side. Gail hasn’t touched it since. Except now the bear is moving. Now it’s halfway

across the dash headed toward the driver side. Gail says it’s obviously shi ing when she turns the car, but she’s never seen it move. Nor I, yet there it goes. Sort of like Advent… I mean, seems I was just digging into our Thanksgiving meal, you know? A few days later at Mass, I said to Gail, “This is the First Sunday of Advent” as in “Already?” And a er Mass, our deacon said to me, “I can’t believe it’s the First Sunday of Advent.” Understood. Then the second Sunday came and went. Then the third. Now we’ve arrived at the Fourth Sunday, so Advent is nearly behind us, and as with the orange bear’s posi oning, I didn’t see it moving along. That’s on me, of course, but if you can relate, please be glad with me because this year we have a special treat. This year we have almost a full week of Advent le un l the Christmas Vigil. It’s like a gi before the presents. The near-week will move along as well, certainly, and perhaps unlike the bear’s posi oning, we may be all too aware of its passage. I hope not, though. I pray instead for quiet me to ponder--even more so than the mysterious traveling Beanie Baby--the prophet’s message and the Evangelist’s re-telling of it centuries later. “The virgin shall conceive, and bear a son, and shall name him Emmanuel…” See you at the manger.

Our teachers and students are an cipa ng Jesus’ birthday with many ac vi es and prayers. We have placed our Na vity set in front of the school (thanks, Mr. Vito!) Congratula ons to Michael Flis, who was named an Illinois State Scholar at St. Viator High School. St. Viator is very proud to announce that 30% of their Senior class were named Illinois State Scholars. Congratula ons Michael! Thank you to Janice Pelle ere for the fantas c new Christmas bulle n board in the front office. Stop by and see it, or check our Facebook for a glimpse of it. Have you voted for your favorite door yet?? If not, quit procras na ng and do it! Go to Facebook and enjoy all the Christmas doors. Here is what is happening in a few more grades: First Grade with Ms. Klotz: First grade is busily ge ng ready for Jesus' birth. They made their own advent calendar in which each day the class does one of the good deeds wri en by a first grade friend. So far we have read a bible story, prayed for the sick, gave someone a heart with a kind message on it, and told someone you love them. I wonder what we will do tomorrow. In science we are wri ng an expository report about reindeer. Did you know some are endangered? Seventh Grade with Mrs. Hardy Jr. High students are enjoying being par cipants in the Global Read Aloud Program. Mrs. Hardy is reading “Pax” to the students, who are communica ng with other students globally who are reading the same book! Cool! Technology with Mrs. Valis: ∼ Kindergarten is using Kid Pix to create snowmen. ∼ 1st and 2nd graders are using Scholas c News online to learn about volunteering

and beavers. ∼ 3rd grade is working on keyboarding skills with Type to Learn 4 and Mathle cs. ∼ State projects are being created in Google Slides in 4th grade. ∼ 5th graders are crea ng Power Point presenta ons with their colonies. ∼ 6th graders are wrapping up Digital Ci zenship with Common Sense Media. Social Skills with Mrs. Smithe: Lori Smithe, School Social Worker, con nues to work with students in monthly class-room sessions. During this season of Advent/Christmas, she leads each grade level in a meaningful discussion about how we care for one other and give of ourselves to those in need. She's reaches out to all of the 8th graders individually as they look ahead to their transi on to high school and meets with various other individuals and small groups as requested. Students are enjoying the opportunity to reflect on important life skills and, through games and ac vi es, to come up with new and different ways to navigate challenges. Congratula ons goes out to the 6th grade class for the most Box Tops submissions. Thank you to everyone that par cipated. We raised more than $400 for the school with this most recent submission. Keep your box tops coming. They can be turned in any me to the school office. 6th grade will be receiving an out of uniform day.

– Józef, mąż sprawiedliwy

Józef został nazwany sprawiedliwym. Na ten tytuł zasłużył przez właściwe rozumie-nie Prawa. Sprawiedliwość Józefa polega na stałym rozważaniu słowa Bożego i życiu nim na co

dzień. Jego postawa jest więc bliska postawie Maryi. Ta duchowa łączność pozwoliła mu zrozumieć więcej niż więzy małżeńskie. Józef przezwycięża sceptycyzm i trudności i z wiarą i miłością przyjmuje Maryję oraz Tego, poczętego w Niej z Ducha Świętego. Jego obecność w tym wydarzeniu jest niezwykle ważna - jako syn Dawida jest spadkobiercą obietnic danych temu królowi. Jego ‘fiat’ objawi sprawiedliwość Boga wyrażoną w wypełnionym już znaku Dziewicy i Jej Syna, który obwieszcza światu, że Bóg jest z nami…

‘Nie bój się. Spójrz na Józefa…’

Gdy Jezus się narodził, dorastał i dojrzewał w cieniu mężczyzny. Józef był pierwszym wzorem dla Tego, który wzorem jest dla każdego z nas.

To, jaki jest Jezus, jakiego pokazują nam Ewangelie jest bardzo przesiąknięte tym, jakim człowiekiem był Józef.

Józef chciał, jak większość z nas, przeżyć zwykłe życie - kobieta, dom, dzieci. Tymczasem ‘wszystko wzięło w łeb…’ W nocy dowiedział się, że nici z jego planów, że to właśnie tą kobietą ma się zająć i zaangażować się na całego.

Józef, podobnie jak wielu z nas, został ‘wplątany’ w dzieło Boga, jakby z przypadku. On zaryzykował, nie znając zakończenia historii. I dobrze na tym wszyscy wyszliśmy.

Józef jest osobą, która pokazuje w sposób symboliczny coś bardzo istotnego w przeżywaniu więzi z Bogiem. Jego historia jest dowodem na to, że trzeba w którymś momencie życia wyjść poza schematy i zrobić coś szalonego, zreal-izować plan, który ma dla nas Bóg. Tak, by wejść w życie pełne ryzyka i przygody.

To, co zrobił Józef, było wbrew logice, wbrew rozsądkowi, ba, wbrew natural-nym pragnieniom. A jednak poszedł, bo usłyszał, że ma się nie bać i zaryzy-kować. Nie bój się zatem…!
