The Most Holy Body and Blood of Christ June 23, 2019 Reflections
Hello!
Thanks to the numerous innovations of technology, such as super networks, millions of people around the globe are connected through words, sounds, and images. With just a few touches on a small smartphone, we can connect and communicate with any person around the world. Je-sus, however, goes beyond such a tangible dimension. He connects the faithful with His own life as He sacrificed Himself. We are connected through His Body and Blood.
On this Sunday, as we celebrate the Solemnity of the Most Holy Body and Blood of Christ, the Gospel portrays a field where a large crowd gathered together. Wherever Jesus traveled, people followed, and He fed them with words and bread. They experienced His love and peace through His presence.
Jesus continues feeding the faithful with His love in the Eucharist. In the Eucharist, Jesus unites all believers in one family of faith. We are united, forming a single Body of Christ, which Paul calls, “the Mystical Body of Christ.” When we receive the Body and Blood of Christ, we receive the most powerful motivation to remove and dispel disagreements and the deepest conflicts. Just as Jesus accepted the wounds of the crucifixion, He also accepts our past wounds. Thus, in the first few centuries of Christianity, the Eucharist had the power to draw thousands of strangers, the outcasts and marginalized people, together. Early Christians overcame obstacles and brought great influence in the lives of many people because the love and sacrifice came from the Eucharist.
Mother Teresa of Calcutta told a story of a beautiful young couple: One day, a young couple visited the monas-tery and offered her a large amount of money, saying “it’s to contribute to feeding the poor.” In Calcutta, during this time, Mother Teresa’s community fed about nine thousand people every day. It was not a strange thing for this young couple to donate their money for such purpose. But Mother Teresa learned that this young couple just got married just two days before. They said, “before the wedding day we thought a lot about it, and we both de-cided not to have wedding clothes, nor did we organize the party or banquet feast. Instead, we want to spend the money from the wedding to give to those who are less fortune then us!”
Culturally, in India, for the affluent—upper-class Hindus, a wedding day without wedding clothes and wedding reception are humiliating for the couple, the entire family, and friends. The relatives of the young couple were shocked, surprised, and considered the decision shameful. For clarification, Mother Teresa questioned, “Why did you make such a strange decision, vexing your parents and relatives?” They answered, “We love each other sin-cerely, so we want to give each other a special wedding gift. We want to start our married life with a sacrifice from both of us.”
Jesus always wants to connect us, Him, and faithful community through His own Body and Blood. This is truly sharing and giving: The giving of everything one needs and give with generous – compassionate love. Those who follow Jesus know that loving and happy people do not depend on; material possessions, things always going their way or getting what they want. Love and happiness are rooted in our hearts and our relationship with Jesus in the Eucharist, and the good we do for others.
This weekend, our parish is participating in Called to Renew – Commitment Weekend. I will deliver the homily at all Masses; then I will go over filling out the pledge cards. Thank you for your generous love, and may God bless you with His abundant gifts.
God bless!
Fr. Thai Le
The Most Holy Body and Blood of Christ June 23, 2019 Reflections
¡Hola!
¡Dios bendiga!
P. Thai Le
