To- day’s reading is a case in point. It begins with one of those long Pauline run on sentences that leave lectors gasping for breath. So what? Take a closer look at how Paul’s fervor for his subject matter derails the gram- mar. There is something admirable about being so caught up in his convictions that the words cannot come fast enough to express them, much less in an or- derly fashion. Scripture scholars usually take this grammatical ineptness as a sign of a passage’s early importance in the Christian community, something they were so ardent about that their language never got refined. What leaves us in this condition? Re-telling the plot line of an action movie or the play-by-play of a sport- ing event? When was the last time any of us was so ex- cited by our faith in Christ that we were left grasping for words, stumbling over our own errors in speech? It may be bad grammar, but it is an excellent way to in- spire others with the message of Christ! Copyright © J. S. Paluch Co., Inc.

ENTHUSIASM AND GRAMMAR

There is a good reason that the writings of St. Paul don’t show up as examples in grammar textbooks. To-day’s reading is a case in point. It begins with one of those long Pauline run on sentences that leave lectors gasping for breath. So what? Take a closer look at how Paul’s fervor for his subject matter derails the gram-mar. There is something admirable about being so caught up in his convictions that the words cannot come fast enough to express them, much less in an or-derly fashion. Scripture scholars usually take this grammatical ineptness as a sign of a passage’s early importance in the Christian community, something they were so ardent about that their language never got refined.

What leaves us in this condition? Re-telling the plot line of an action movie or the play-by-play of a sport-ing event? When was the last time any of us was so ex-cited by our faith in Christ that we were left grasping for words, stumbling over our own errors in speech? It may be bad grammar, but it is an excellent way to in-spire others with the message of Christ!

PARISH ANNOUNCEMENTS MESSAGE FROM THE PARRISH OFFICE

The parish office is now open Monday to Friday from 9:30am to 12pm and 1pm to 5pm. Please come in wearing a face mask and maintain a 6ft. distance from others. Only one person is admit-ted at a time inside the office, others may wait outside.

These past few months have been very difficult for all of us at St. Thomas. The time of being in quarantine took all of us by surprise. Even in these difficult moments, my goal was to continue to provide spiritual opportunities for all of us to grow in our faith as the one parish family that we are as best as we could possibly could following the state, county and diocesan guidelines. It was a great challenge: to provide spiritual opportunities when we were not allowed to gather. Not being able to celebrate ANY of the sacraments with all of you, or even to gather to pray or socialize was very sad and difficult for Fr. Gary and myself. Many people called and shared their ideas and I contemplated every single one of them and explored if the idea was something that we were able to implement in our parish being in compliance with state, county and diocesan guidelines. Even though our parish office and church were closed, we were very busy these past few months. As always praying for all of our parishioners was, and still is, the main focus of all that we do. Fr. Gary and myself experienced something that we had never experienced before: celebrating Mass in an empty church. Celebrating Holy Week and Easter without any parishioners was very sad for Fr. Gary and myself. Even in these moments of quarantine, I spent a lot of time answering the phones, e-mails and messages from many people in our parish, even going to the cemetery to do funeral services for family members who had passed away. Fr. Gary and myself are extremely happy to be able to once again pray together as the one parish family that we are in our church. There are still many things that we need to figure out and get used to during this time. Yet, rest assure that I will continue to do my best to meet the needs of our parish and parishioners in the best possible way following the state, county and diocesan guidelines. I also want to thank all of you who have financially supported our parish during this time. Your financial support during these past months have made a huge difference and have helped tre-mendously our parish to be able to pay our bills. Please continue to pray and support our parish and rest assured of our prayers for all of you as well. Please know that we missed all of you and are very excited to have all of you back: praying together as the one parish family of St. Thomas that we are. May God continue to bless and keep all of you safe, Fr. Abel

R. Aleluya.

Jesus said to the Twelve: “Fear no one. Nothing is concealed that will not be revealed, nor secret that will not be known. What I say to you in the darkness, speak in the light; what you hear whis-pered, proclaim on the housetops. And do not be afraid of those who kill the body but cannot kill the soul; rather, be afraid of the one who can destroy both soul and body in Ge-henna. Are not two sparrows sold for a small coin? Yet not one of them falls to the ground without your Father’s knowledge. Even all the hairs of your head are counted. So do not be afraid; you are worth more than many sparrows. Everyone who acknowledges me before others I will acknowledge before my heavenly Father. But whoever denies me before others, I will deny before my heavenly Father.”
