Blood Drive HelpFeb. 17, 8:30 a.m.-1:30 p.m.

We could really use your help as we prepare for our upcoming blood drive. Th ere are still open appointment times, and here are three easy ways you can help us meet our goal on Feb. 17.

1. If you haven’t scheduled your donation yet, sign up!

2. Invite your spouse or signifi cant other. Share the love as you share the life-saving gift of blood together.

3. Invite a friend to our drive. Donating blood is always more fun with a friend, so bring one along or in place of your donation.

Your donation means so much to the American Red Cross because patients in need count on drives like ours to provide a steady supply of blood. Each donation can help save up to three lives, so by meeting our goal, we can touch many lives in our community and around the country.

Your commitment to our blood drive’s success and St. Th omas Aquinas are greatly appreciated. Let’s get those appointment times fi lled up.

Get a head start by answering the questions online at redcrossblood.org/rapidpass.

You can set your appointment online at redcrossblood.org/give/schedule.

A Message from the St. Vincent de Paul Society

Dear Fellow Parishioners, In 2018, we had a wonderful year of parish support for people in need in our area.

We thank you for that.

We also converted our donation tracking process in mid year. Unfortunately, this means that you will receive a second state-ment from St. Vincent de Paul that includes your contributions from January through May 2018 in a letter that will be sent to you shortly. You can add this amount to the contribution listed on the statement you recently received from the parish. We apologize for this inconvenience.

God Bless,Jack Murphy

For most Catholics, receiving the Body and Blood of Christ in Holy Communion is the high point of the Mass. In this sacred ritual, the People of God participate in an intimate

sharing of the very life of God. As Pope Francis has said:

Although we are the ones who stand in procession to receive Communion . . . in reality it is Christ who comes towards us to assimilate us in him. Th ere is an encounter with Jesus!

Th e entire liturgy prepares the assembly for this moment. Hearing the Word of God stimulates the desire of believers to draw closer to God. Praying the Eucharistic Prayer rouses hearts to off er God thanks and praise for the death that brings life. Th e Lord’s Prayer proclaims a hunger for the bread that nourishes. Th e sign of peace strengthens the bond of unity before the community approaches the table of reconciliation.

One of the ways this unity is expressed is in song. Th e Gener-al Instruction of the Roman Missal mandates that the com-munion song begin while the priest is receiving communion and continue until the last person receives. Th e song helps believers to see that communion is not an individual act, but a corporate act of thanksgiving, as the U.S. Bishops expressed in “Happy Are Th ose Who Are Called to His Supper,”

Th e reception of Holy Communion is an act of the Church as the Body of Christ. While we each personally receive Holy Commu-nion, it is not a private devotion. Rather, the reception of Holy Communion is an integral part of our worship as a community of faith.

Th e community’s procession is a sign of the pil-grim Church on earth moving toward the heav-enly Jerusalem. Th e assembly moves in solidarity not only with one another but with the countless

numbers of all the baptized, those living and those who have gone before.

Such a procession requires an awareness of the gift about to be received. Th e people move as one body who know they have been loved and redeemed by God. Th ey approach the table of the Lord with humility, gratitude and eager anticipation.

Before receiving the Body and the Blood of Christ, communi-cants make a bow of the head in reverence to Jesus. Th e min-ister says, “Th e Body of Christ” and “Th e Blood of Christ.” Th e Body of Christ is received in the palm of the hand or on the tongue, a decision that is made by the communicant, not by the person distributing. Th e cup is received into the hands of the communicant who drinks from it.

After the minister presents the host and the cup, the “Amen” that is uttered affi rms the belief in the Body of Christ. It also affi rms a commitment, a “yes” to God’s invitation to share in God’s very life. As St. Augustine reminds us:

If you are the body and the members of Christ, then your mystery lies on the table of the Lord. You receive your own mystery, and your response to what you are is ‘Amen.’ Th en be a member of the body of Christ so that your ‘Amen’ be true! Be what you see there! Receive what you are!

Receiving the Body and Blood of Christ, as Pope Francis has said, calls us to conversion:

To nourish oneself of the Eucharist means to allow oneself to be changed by what we receive . . . Each time we receive Commu-

nion, we resemble Jesus more; we transform ourselves more fully into Jesus. As the Bread and the Wine are converted into the Body and Blood of the Lord, so too those who receive it with faith are transformed into a living Eucharist.

When the entire community has participated in the feast, all may spend some time in silence or in a song of praise and thanks-giving. Th en the community is sent beyond the doors of the church to be the Body of Christ, “a living Eucharist” in the world.
