RENEW MY CHURCH UPDATE Dear Parishioners of St. Colette, Misión San Juan Diego, St. Theresa and St. Thomas of Villanova,

On Monday, March 12th, our Renew My Church Grouping leadership met and was given two scenarios by the Archdiocese of Chicago to further our conversation as a group. We share these scenarios with you this weekend. It is very important to note a few realities:

These scenarios show potential models of how our parishes and schools could be configured in the future. These initial scenarios, which will be shared in detail at our next parish meeting, are conversation starters only. NO DECISIONS HAVE BEEN MADE!

The two initial scenarios are intended to spark conversation about how to most effectively minister to the entire community and how to provide an underlying structure to support that ministry.

Through the process, our grouping is encouraged to propose alternatives that could as effectively or more effectively support ministry in the grouping. Initial discussions about additional forms of collaboration may emerge as well.

It is important to note that any structural changes would be proposed to take effect July 1, 2019. No parish nor school changes would occur for the 2018-19 parochial and school year.

YOUR INPUT IS NEEDED — PLEASE COME TO OUR NEXT PARISH MEETING ON MONDAY, APRIL 9TH AT 7:00 PM IN THE CHURCH TO SHARE YOUR FEEDBACK AND INPUT.

Again, these initial scenarios are conversation starters only. No decisions have been made. We are asked to provide feedback on the initial scenarios from the Archdiocese and propose alternative scenarios and configuration models.

Please continue to pray for the success of the Renew My Church process, and may God bless you always.

Initial Scenario 1

• St. Colette and Misión San Juan Diego would join together at the St. Colette site. This united parish would sell the current Misión San Juan Diego property to re-invest in the space at the St. Colette campus.

• St. Theresa and St. Thomas of Villanova Parishes would remain in their current parish structures as canonically independent parishes with their own full-time resident pastors.

• St. Theresa School and St. Thomas of Villanova School would be able to continue in their current structures and programming. However, through the Renew My Church process, the leadership of both communities may certainly explore if there would be opportunities to strengthen Catholic education through any structural or programmatic changes.

• Tax Credit Scholarships are hoped to play a vital role in strengthening access to Catholic education and enrollment at St. Colette School. The archdiocese has made a commitment to the school for the 2017-18 and 2018-19 school years to allow time for efforts to increase enrollment. This scenario aims for St. Colette School to reach vital enrollment and financial stability to continue operating for the long-term.

Initial Scenario 2

• All four parishes would remain as canonically independent parishes at their current sites. • To strengthen ministry, St. Thomas of Villanova and Misión San Juan Diego would explore establishing a deeper

partnership to use shared ministry facilities at the St. Thomas of Villanova campus. Misión San Juan Diego would continue to hold Mass at its current site.

• St. Theresa School and St. Thomas of Villanova School would be able to continue in their current structures and programming. However, through the Renew My Church process, the leadership of both communities may certainly explore if there would be opportunities to strengthen Catholic education through any structural or programmatic changes.

• If Tax Credit Scholarships do not have the hoped for impact on enrollment and financial stability at St. Colette School, the difficult decision may need to be made to close St. Colette School in the future. If this decision to close were to be made in the future, the grouping would be expected to work together to welcome as many St. Colette school students and families as possible to the other Catholic schools.

Michelle Arnold: I was raised Catholic. I’m a divorced single mom of three great children, one girl and two boys. I’ll be receiving the sacraments of Confirmation and Eucharist at the Easter Vigil. I’m looking forward to serving Our Lord together.

Michael Lindert: Mike Lindert has been married to his wonderful wife, Jackie, for 26 years. Mike and Jackie met in the lobby of their apartment building on Briar Street in Chicago. They soon fell in love, married a few years later, bought their first house in Palatine and lived there for the next 24 years. They raised three lovely daughters and committed to sending them to St. Theresa School where they enjoyed a terrific educational environment that prepared them well for the challenges ahead in high school and college. Mike works for Eligo Energy in Chicago as their VP Sales. Jackie works for Lavelle Law as their Marketing and Graphic Design Director. Mike decided to join the Catholic Church for three main reasons: 1) to strengthen his relationship with God, 2) to fulfill his pre-matrimonial promise to his wife that he would someday convert to Catholicism, 3) he realized his youngest daughter will soon move away to college, and he saw her start to question her relationship with God and commitment to her religion, so he wanted to learn more about the Catholic Church and its teachings to help her with her journey. Mike will be receiving the sacraments of Confirmation and Eucharist at the Easter Vigil.

Jane Murillo: My name is Jane Murillo. I have six children and fifteen grandchildren. Twenty-eight years ago, after my divorce, I decided to make changes in my life. My direction regarding my religion was in a confusing state. However, faith is something that has been deeply rooted in me. Looking back, I can see that God has always been there, even in the darkest moments of my life. He has guided me to where I am right now. For all of this and more, I have Jesus Christ to be thankful to! I’ll be receiving the sacraments of Baptism, Confirmation, and Eucharist at the Easter Vigil.

Kristie Sundara: My name is Kristie Sundara and I moved to Palatine four years ago. I was born and raised Catholic, but we were not strong in our Faith. My passion to get closer to God has moved me to complete my Communion and Confirmation. I’m blessed to be able to do this at an age that will allow me to strengthen my knowledge about our Catholic faith.

Brandon Vasser: My name is Brandon Vasser. I’m 34 years old and married with two children. I am in the US NAVY. My calling to the Church happened last year around Easter. I hadn’t been to church in years and I believe God was calling to me to open my eyes to his love. Going through this program has helped me tremendously through my spiritual and day to day life. As I continue my spiritual journey, I know the love and guidance from God will continue to bring me to him closer each day. I’ll be receiving the sacraments of Baptism, Confirmation, and Eucharist at the Easter Vigil.

Our Heart Burned Within Us Saints tend to rise exactly at the hemming between the hostile world and the rising Kingdom of God. When the proclamation of the Gospel was reduced to whispers, and when it was impossible to discern the voice of God from human imaginings or the impulses of evil, God raised up an unexpected warrior in the spiritual exercises from a Spanish town called Loyola. As the mission to spread the Gospel travelled to the New World, encountering new civilizations, and enculturating those who have never heard of Christ in North America, God sent a missionary with the grit and zeal of a martyr. The hidden lives of saints like the doctor from Avila in Spain burst out when the vocation to “put on Christ” was reduced to a few stirring sermons, social programs, and the pious platitude of unsubstantial moral statements or an extreme lack thereof. Greatness rises like Spring from a long-drawn-out winter. It can grow in the most lifeless parts of the inner world of humankind. The Lenten Season serves as a great reminder of this reality, and our annual Lenten Mission assists us in applying this principle to our particular minds and hearts today.

Join us every night at 7 pm the week prior to Palm Sunday in our 3-part Lenten Mission Speaker Series. On Monday, March 19th Fr. Ken Simpson will lead us on a meditation on the Ignatian method of Discernment through the Spiritual Exercises. On Tuesday, March 20th Fr. Tim Fairman will be presenting on the mission and martyrdom of Saint Isaac Jogues, directly followed by our parish Reconciliation. Finally, on Wednesday, March 21st, join us and Msgr. John Canary as he discusses the Art of Contemplation by one of the great Doctors of the Church, St. Teresa of Avila.

Together, may our journey through Lent lead us to one heart, one burning flame of love for God as it has the saints who have gone before us.

2018 LENTEN OUTREACH – FASTING, PRAYERS, & ALMSGIVING

THE MINISTRY OF CARE AT ST. THERESA Christmas and Thanksgiving Baskets

For decades, Donna Russ and her husband Al have been coordinating our parish’s annual Thanksgiving and Christmas basket program. About 60 families are helped each holiday. Early November, Donna begins running articles in the bulletin seeking parishioners to adopt families in need of food for Thanksgiving and also asking parishioners if they are aware of any families in need. There is always a need for more families to be “adopted”. Donna and Al go to Aldi’s to shop for food to put in the boxes. The names of the families assisted come from many sources: some are parishioners, some from Catholic Charities, some from the Palatine Senior Center, some from SVdP or other sources. Donna checks with all the other Thanksgiving programs in town to ensure that everyone is receiving food from only one program.

On the Monday of Thanksgiving week, each family who is being assisted picks up a box of non-perishable food, a turkey or ham (which are donated by parishioners), and a gift card for other perishable items to round out the meal. For those families who were adopted, the donor provides the entire meal. In cases in which recipients are housebound, parishioners deliver the food directly to their home.

For Christmas, the school parents are given a list of the ages and genders of the family members and shop for gifts for each member of every family with children. Like at Thanksgiving, parishioners can “adopt” a family, and then do all the shopping for both presents and food. On a Saturday before Christmas, all the recipients come to the gathering space to pick up their food and

presents. While they are there, the families can select hats, scarves and gloves that are provided by the children from the school and religious ed program. And again, for those who are housebound, delivery is available.

How can you help? • Adoption of all the families, only a few have been adopted in years past. • Nominate a family that a family that could benefit from the baskets, contact Donna or Deacon Steve • Continue donating to the Giving Tree at Christmas, this covers the gift cards that provide the perishable food items. • Pray for the families we serve, many of whom are in situations that they never could have imagined

Holiday Gift Card Distribution to Homeless High School Students

According to state reports, almost 100 students at Palatine and Fremd are classified as homeless. While homelessness in Palatine doesn’t mean students are living under bridges, there are a variety of situations that might result in being categorized as homeless, including:

• Lacking a fixed, regular and adequate nighttime residence; • Sharing the housing of other persons due to the loss of housing resulting from economic hardship; or • Being an unaccompanied youth/student who are unable to live in their home and are forced to find alternate shelter.

Working together with the other Palatine Faith in Action churches, St Theresa parishioners have generously donated thousands of dollars of gift cards for the past few years to help make the holidays brighter for the high school students in our Palatine High Schools who don’t have stable housing. This past year, the churches collected a total of more than $11,000 in gift cards and many bags of toiletries, granola bars, and clothing! And the members of Thrive Vineyard church once again handwrote encouragement cards for each of the gift bag recipients.

Palatine Assisting Through Hope (PATH-www.path-palatine.org) packages the donated items & gift cards, into gift bags. They deliver the bags to PHS and Fremd students early in December so that social workers can distribute them to the students. Some of the gift cards will be saved for social workers to utilize for families/students in need throughout the school year. The social workers appreciate having an emergency stash when there is a family in crisis or a student is waiting for their free and reduced lunch paperwork to be accepted before they can start receiving school meals.

Thanks to all who contributed gift cards to support these students in need. Please contact the MOC for more information.

Adoration

Open Hours of Eucharistic Adoration:

Every Friday from 8:30 a.m.—5:00 p.m.

Extended 24 hours on every First Friday of the month 8:30 a.m.—7:45 a.m. the following day

Unplug and spend some time quietly with the Lord.

L E P in the style of Taize

When Christ invited his disciples to join him in prayer on the mountain, he was transfigured before them. But Christ was no different than he had been. He had not changed. Rather, the disciples' percep on of the Lord Jesus had changed.

They now saw Christ in a new way, a non-ordinary way that allowed them to perceive Christ and the great prophets Moses and Elijah in heavenly glory.

Prayer is the way we change our percep on and experience a bit of the glory of heaven.

Join us on the Thursdays of Lent as we pray to be transfigured by Christ our God through

song, medita on, and silence.

March 22nd at 7:00 p.m. in the church.

We celebrate Holy Thursday as the day of Jesus’ Last Supper with his disciples.

“Washing feet is a very menial task. A sign of the host welcoming a guest; a sign of the recognition that you are important to me. You are important because of who you are, not because of what you have done, not because you are a sinner or a saint, but because in you there is the unique presence of God”

Jesus tells the disciples “I will wash your feet because you are going to be the leaders and it is you who then have to wash other people’s feet”.

We invite all parishioners to have their feet washed on Holy Thursday. Please contact Marie Paul at

[email protected] to sign up.
