The Scribe seemed unsure whether or not Jesus knew this teaching. The Scribe did not know who he was questioning. Not only did Jesus give the first commandment according to Jewish scripture he added the second com- mandment, You shall love your neighbor as yourself. The Scribe expected to sit in judgement of Jesuss answer. His task seems to have been to protect Judaism against the possi- bility that Jesusteaching might be incorrect. However Je- sus revealed his knowledge of the law, Jewish tradition and the Talmud. Jesus was more gentle and encouraging with the Scribe. Jesus saw that the Scribe answered with understand- ing and said to him, You are not far from the kingdom of God.After that, no one dared to ask Jesus any more ques- tions. Clearly the crowd understood that when Jesus spoke, they were hearing the word of God. There are obvious les- sons and invitations and challenges to us today when we hear the scriptures. We live in a challenging world where internet bloggers challenge the orthodoxy even of the Pope, sitting in judgement of teachings or opinions or even people that they may not understand or might dislike. Jesus invites us to imitate him, seeking goodness in those whom we are in dialogue or in conflict, noting the goodness, encouraging growth, practicing patience and self control. When we assume the attitude and approach that is Jesus, we will be doing our best to accomplish what we have asked as we begin our liturgy. Grant we pray, that we may hasten without stumbling to receive the things you have promised.

The Scribe who came to Jesus asking which is the first of all the commandments was not seeking information. He wasn’t interested in any opinion that Jesus might have about laws commands, obligations or commandments. The Scribe is interested in orthodoxy and he was going to be the judge of whether or not Jesus was orthodox in what he be-lieved and what he taught. The Scribe seemed unsure whether or not Jesus knew this teaching. The Scribe did not know who he was questioning. Not only did Jesus give the first commandment according to Jewish scripture he added the second com-mandment, “You shall love your neighbor as yourself.” The Scribe expected to sit in judgement of Jesus’s answer. His task seems to have been to protect Judaism against the possi-bility that Jesus’ teaching might be incorrect. However Je-sus revealed his knowledge of the law, Jewish tradition and the Talmud. Jesus was more gentle and encouraging with the Scribe. Jesus saw that the Scribe answered with understand-ing and said to him, “You are not far from the kingdom of God.” After that, no one dared to ask Jesus any more ques-tions.
