¿Me he experimentado mirado por Jesús?

We were asked recently if the people we help ever paid us back. While the person who asked the question knew that we never asked for remuneration, he wondered if people ever tried to ―return the favor.‖ While at the time the question caught us off guard, and while we knew that yes, the people we help do oftentimes try to return the help, the question led us to pay more careful attention to the actual everyday workings of Helping Hands. We wrote several weeks ago of the man to whom we had given boxes of food. The man shared his food with another man in need. Over the years he developed a friendship with the man, and when he finally came into some money, he not only took care of his friend financially, but he donated several checks to Helping Hands in return for the help he had received from us so many weeks ago. The monetary donations far outweighed anything we had done for him financially. We oftentimes receive donations in the mail from people with simple notes such as ―You helped me when I was down and out.‖ ―You saved me, and now I would like to do what I can to help someone else.‖ The checks or money enclosed may range from a few dollars to a few hundred. Every penny received is a tremendous blessing to us because we know that it came to us from someone from whom that money was precious. Every day that our store is open we receive unsolicited donations. While we may charge $2 for an item, we are oftentimes given $5 or even more. The comments range from: ―you helped me when I was in need, and I want to do what I can to help someone else;‖ to ―you do such good work; let me help you do more;‖ to ―just give it to help someone out.‖ Those donations amount to many, many dollars each day that the store is open. Still other people use our thrift store as a means of helping the poor. They know that we are an all-volunteer organization and that all of the money we take in goes to alleviate the needs of the poor. One wonderful man each year will come to our store, buy an item for while we normally charge $1. He hands us a check for $1,000 and tells us to keep the change. With a wink and a smile he tells us that he is sure we can find a good way to use it. We are both blessed and humbled because in all of those cases the money was never solicited. Yes, the people we help, and our customers all help us to pay it forward, as much as they are capable of doing so. And for those who cannot, there are a multitude of people in our wonderful city who watch over the poor every day. Those people are you, who help us care for them through your generous donations. What a special ministry we have at Helping Hands! We cannot help but know that God’s gentle, loving arms are embracing us as we seek to care for His most favored ones. And those arms embrace us through your support of Helping Hands. Thank you so very, very much!
