An Act of Spiritual Communion

My Jesus, I believe that You are present in the Most Holy Sacrament. I love You above all things, and I desire to receive You into my soul. Since I cannot at this moment receive You sacramentally, come at least spiritually into my heart. I embrace You as if You were already there and unite myself wholly to You. Never permit me to be separated from You. Amen.

2021 Mass Book

As many of you know, the Mass Book typically opens right after Easter for the following year. As St. Stephen’s is currently closed until further notice, this cannot take place. Once things return to “normal”, we will schedule and announce the date and time the Mass Book will be open. Thank you for your patience as we make our way through these unprecedented times.

Jesus with us!

Our Sunday readings continue the post-Resurrection narrative. This weekend it is Jesus meeting two disciples on the road to Emmaus. It is especially pertinent to the time we are going through. At first, they did not recognize Jesus until he opened their eyes to the Scriptures and in the breaking of the bread. How we long to resume our normal worship services and receive Jesus in that great gift of the Eucharist! But now, we can't.

Let's not lose sight of the fact that especially now, Jesus is appearing to us in disguises we may have overlooked before - the many people who are step-ping up and helping those limited to the access of support and services, neighbors now checking on neighbors to see if they are alright and the first responders and medical staff who are now going beyond the call of duty. In spite of the uncertainty of the next day, let us recognize the fact that Jesus is with us in those men and women who have risen to this moment.

*******

With Gratitude

I want to thank all who have been working very hard to maintain contact with our Saint Stephen Family. Ruthann DiMauro, Donna Washio, and Joan Rotar con-tinue to make phone calls to parishioners, seeing if they need anything and updating information. Dina Tashman maintains the parish Facebook page and Katie Bisaro enlists Flocknotes to keep us all updated on information. Bob and Mary-Ellen Kerr fine tune the technology that allows us to live stream services. Mary Juliano, parish manager, works behind the scenes to ensure that all of our live streaming is utilized to the fullest as well as at-tending to the ongoing business of the parish. Maxine Martin, our bookkeeper, continues to maintain our finan-cial obligations. Anthony Marcella, our Music Director, has continued to provide the inspirational accompani-ment for our worship services. Kathy Weyant, Joann MacDougall and Casey VanDuynhoven have served as lectors. Deacons Dan and Tom not only serve at Masses but continue their responsibilities to the homebound and cemetery, respectively. Mrs. Negersmith and Mrs. vanDuynhoven have maintained contact with the young children and families in our School and Religious Educa-tion programs. Let us continue to pray that soon we will return to what will be a new and different "normal."

******* May the peace of the Risen Christ fill your hearts

with love, joy, and hope this Easter Season!

Prayer for Healing of Coronavirus

Jesus Christ, you traveled through towns and villages “curing every disease and illness.” At your command, the sick were made well. Come to our aid now, in the midst of the global spread of the coronavirus, that we may experience your healing love. Heal those who are sick with the virus. May they regain their strength and health through quality medical care. Heal us from our fear, which prevents nations from working together and neighbors from helping one another. Heal us from our pride, which can make us claim invulnerability to a disease that knows no borders.

Jesus Christ, healer of all, stay by our side in this time of uncertainty and sorrow.

Be with those who have died from the virus. May they be at rest with you in your eternal peace. Be with the families of those who are sick or have died. As they worry and grieve, defend them from illness and despair. May they know your peace.

Be with the doctors, nurses, researchers and all medical professionals who seek to heal and help those affected and who put themselves at risk in the process. May they know your protection and peace.

Be with the leaders of all nations. Give them the foresight to act with charity and true concern for the well-being of the people they are meant to serve. Give them the wisdom to invest in long-term solutions that will help prepare for or prevent future outbreaks. May they know your peace, as they work together to achieve it on earth.

Whether we are home or abroad, surrounded by many people suffering from this illness or only a few, Jesus Christ, stay with us as we endure and mourn, persist and prepare. In place of our anxiety, give us your peace.

Jesus Christ, heal us.

Mother’s Day Spiritual Bouquet

of Masses

Remember your mom or other special ladies in your life this Mother’s Day by enrolling them in a Spiritual Bouquet of Masses. Each day from May 10 through May 15 your intentions will be included in the live streamed Mass at 9:00am. As you can’t pick up “Mother’s Day Intentions Envelopes” at church, we have set up two options to enroll your loved ones: Send in a note including the names of each person you would like included in the Spiritual Bouquet and your check to St. Stephen Church, 75 Sanfordville Road, Warwick, NY 10990. Via our website and upon entering Donate in the upper left corner, click on the Spiritual Bouquet tab. Please set the amount and list the names of the persons you would like to enroll in the comment section. With either method, the donation amount is up to you. The notes will be collected and comments printed and set on the altar during the Bouquet of Masses just as we have done with the envelopes used in previous years.

Third Sunday of Easter

Emmaus might as well be Brigadoon. We hear of it in this one story—and it’s only in Luke—and then it disappears. The journey to Emmaus is one of the most beloved sto-ries about Jesus, and yet the town is probably “mythical” in the truest sense. Like so much of life, this story is about the journey, not the destination. Running away from Jerusalem and their fears, probably going home in disillusionment, two of Jesus’ disciples encounter a stranger on the road who, like a rabbi, is able to help them understand their experiences using his deep knowledge of scripture. Later, sharing a meal with him, they recognized the stranger as Jesus, and they return to Jerusalem to tell the others. How like our Mass—we hear the scriptures and an explanation of them, we share a meal, and then we go out to tell the good news. THE STRANGER

Imagine meeting a stranger, a fellow traveler, who butts into the conversation you’re having with your friend. The two disciples in today’s Gospel are heading to Emmaus, seven miles away from Jerusalem, heartbroken and disil-lusioned. It’s the day of Jesus’ resurrection, but no one knew it when these two set out on their journey, maybe going home to resume their pre-Jesus lives because it seemed as if everything was over.

In the middle of trying to make sense of the tragedy, some eavesdropping guy asks them about their troubles. After telling their story, the disciples are amazed to find this stranger able to piece together the fragments of the broken image of their master using scripture as the glue. Then it happens—at dinner they recognize Jesus in the breaking of bread, just before he vanishes. With their hearts burning with love and inspiration, they run back to Jerusalem—at night—to tell the others their new story. THE STRANGER/SHEPHERD

The stranger in this story who turns out to be Jesus is reminiscent of the Gospel images of Jesus as the Good Shepherd. He seeks out his “lost sheep” who have strayed from the faith community, and the experience of the risen Lord transforms them into perhaps the very first evangelists, sharing their Good News with their friends back in Jerusalem.

Are we transformed by the time we leave Mass? We should be! Our hearts should be burning within us from our experience of Jesus in word and sacrament. Yet how often life breaks our heart and clouds our mind! We stum-ble toward our own Emmaus, unaware that Jesus is with us. We are privileged to experience Jesus in every Eu-charist through the breaking open of scripture and by the breaking of the bread. Like the disciples of the story, that transforming experience can compel us to go forth and tell everyone the Good News. Today’s Readings: Acts 2:14, 22–33; Ps 16:1–2, 5, 7–8, 9–10, 11; 1 Pt 1:17–21; Lk 24:13–35 Copyright © J. S. Paluch Co., Inc.

Emmaus Amazement

Today’s Gospel has some surprises for the disciples go-ing to Emmaus. The first is that Luke tells us Jesus ap-peared to them, “but their eyes were prevented from rec-ognizing him” (Luke 24:16). Now I don’t think Jesus was wearing glasses like Clark Kent. More likely, they were prevented by their lack of faith. They knew that Jesus had died, so this man who looked familiar couldn’t be him. All they had heard was that Jesus’ body was missing from the tomb. Luke says they were debating, as if they could-n’t decide what to believe.

That leads to the second point. No, they were not sur-prised that the stranger could quote scripture. Most Jew-ish men were familiar with the scriptures, but they were amazed at how Jesus explained them. Even the disciples had not thought of them as predicting Jesus’ suffering and death. Yet they seem to know the truth of what Jesus was saying. Their hearts were burning with the fire of the Holy Spirit, who helped them to understand the new meaning of scripture. Their story can help us, too.

If you find you are not always able to see Jesus in the people or events of your life, you may need to stretch your faith. One way to do that is to discuss it with others. The two disciples were stretching their faith as they dis-cussed what they had heard. Even better, debate it with someone who doesn’t believe. (Remember to keep it friendly.) You may not convince them to change, but your faith will grow as you learn to express it. Another way to stretch your faith is to read and pray over the scriptures. Ask what God is trying to tell you in them. The disciples on the way to Emmaus began to see how Jesus fulfilled the promises found there. Passages that may have been mysterious before began to become clear when applied to Jesus.

Ask God to help you see Jesus in other people. Receive Jesus in Communion as often as you can (at least once a week). Trust him and expect to see Jesus both in the people around you and in the changes that come into your life. The more you look for Jesus, the easier it is to see him. Tom Schmidt, Copyright © J. S. St. Stephens Parish and School participates in Great Lakes Scrips Shop With Scrip

Fundraising Program

Did you know...Our parishioners and school families are able to purchase gift cards for America's most popular retailers through Great Lakes Scrip Center® (GLSC) and use them for their everyday purchases.

Our organization earns money with each gift card pur-chase. Scrip gift cards are the same gift cards you can pur-chase from the retailer.

Why is this important now? Under normal circumstances, gift cards are available for purchase in our parish office and after weekend masses. Since we are not able to sell cards at this time in person, we are writing to let families know that you can continue, or begin to support this important fundraiser by purchas-ing e-certificates directly through the ShopWithScrip website, for purchases of food or other essential items. E-certificates can also be purchased and emailed to a friend or family member as a gift.

Please consider purchasing gift cards online for your own shopping, or for gifts.

How to Enroll: Visit www.shopwithscrip.com. If you have not previously signed up to support St. Stephens, click the blue button, top right "Join a Program". Enter the enrollment code for St. Stephens FD1AC86A16447.

Begin Shopping: E-certificates that are able to be purchased and delivered online are designed as a ScripNow eCard. Some retailers that offer ScripNow eCards include: Amazon, Starbucks, Target, Walmart, Sams Club, Home Depot, Lowes, Kohls, Gap, Old Navy, CVS, Lands End, LLBean, Dunkin Donuts, GrubHub.

Make your purchase using a debit, credit card or electron-ic transfer from a checking or savings account. Please note: checks are not accepted when purchasing e-certificates and we cannot accept checks at the church, or order physical cards at this time.

St. Stephens is automatically credited with your purchase based on the discount percentage of the cards you pur-chased.

*The funds you raise for St. Stephens, based on your purchases and the percentage/card, are tax deductible as allowed by law.

Unfortunately, ShopRite and Price Chopper do not participate in the Great Lake Scrips Program so these cards will be unavailable until the parish office reopens.

We are here to help and assist in any way. If you have questions about the Gift Card Fundraiser, please ask!

Be well and stay safe, Mary Juliano [email protected] Kendra Percarpio [email protected]

Warwick Food Pantry Needs You

Dear neighbors at St. Stephen’s Parish, At present what the Warwick Ecumenical Food Pantry really needs is your money. During this emergency period, we expect a surge in demand. We will jettison our usual in-pantry client choice model in favor of a socially distant safe “curbside delivery” model to families in their vehicles. We will be offering a standard pre-bag of groceries, the number of bags being determined by family size.

Accordingly, we will be purchasing a limited number of grocery items in bulk. Although we never will turn food donations away—even during the emergency period we will accept and store shelf stable donations—in the cur-rent environment money really hits the spot.

Please! Donations by checks to the pantry at 135 Forester Avenue Warwick NY 10990 or with credit and debit cards online at www.warwickpantry.com. With gratitude and thanks from our hearts. Glenn P. & Susan D. Dickes

Florida Community Food Pantry

In 2019 the pantry served 979 Warwick families in addi-tion to others from neighboring areas and are not sure how many new families they will be serving. We are open every week on Thursday mornings from 9am to 12pm and have stayed open each week during the pandemic. Clients place orders from the car and wait while volun-teers pack and deliver their supplies.

The FCFP partners with Shoprite of Warwick for food recovery, as well as purchasing from the Hudson Valley Food Bank.

A dollar donated to the pantry will stretch further than your dollar at the store, so please consider a monetary donation which can be made through PayPal or by check made out to Florida Community Food Pantry, PO Box 94, Florida, NY 10921

We are always in awe of the goodness of those in our community who time and time again have answered our call for help.

Blessings for all to stay healthy. Beth Maas, FCFP Director
