Saint John Vianney Prayer for Vocations

Saint John Vianney, patron of parish priests, we ask for your intercession that young people called to the priesthood and consecrated life may hear God’s call.

We pray the Lord send workers into His great harvest so that the Gospel is preached, the poor are served with love, the suffering are comforted, and His people may be strengthened by the sacraments. We ask this through Christ our Lord.

Amen.

V. Health Fair for 50 years and older on Saturday, April 16th, from 7:30 AM to 12 noon. Fast for blood test, and have a con-tinental breakfast! Lectures, door prizes, games, exercise, plus fellowship. Mass at 9:00am. All are welcome to bring a friend, but please RSVP. Questions...call Deacon Dirck at 270.316.1668.

I. Two Parishes Merge into One: On Holy Thursday, March 24, 2016, a degree establishing St. Francis of Assisi Church as a new Catholic parish in Todd County was signed by Bishop William Medley. In Guthrie, St. Mary & Charles Church, which accidentally burned, and in Elkton, St. Susan Church, parishioners decided it made sense to merge the two par-ishes into one; parishioners from these two parishes submitted names for the new parish to Bishop Medley. The new parish has been named St. Francis of Assisi Church after Pope Francis, and after their beloved pastor and now sacramental minister, Fr. Frank Ruff, Glmy.

II. Mass for the Divorced: Bishop Medley will preside and be the homi-list at our 9:00AM Mass on Saturday, April 16th. All of us know people who know the pain, darkness, and struggle of divorce. Divorced persons from Daviess County and around the Diocese are invited to be part of this, as well as anyone else who wishes to participate. Please be disciples and evangelize—share this information with as many people as you know.

III. World Day of Prayer for Vocations: next Sunday, April 17th, the Church throughout the world prays for vocations, especially vocations to the Priesthood. Will you make an effort to support a special effort to ask the Lord for those called to vocations to priesthood and religious life will answer a resounding ‘YES?’ Pledge to pray for vocations at the Interna-tional website, invisiblemonastery.com. It was inspired by a call from Rome urging Catholics to "organize an 'invisible' monastery in which many persons, day and night, are committed to continuous prayer for priestly vocations." God is waiting for those called to answer Him: YES!

IV. Stained-Glass Window Series brings the Owensboro Symphony to the Cathedral! Sunday, April 17th, at 4:00PM. Gratitude for the generous donations of parishioners to our "Arts at the Cathedral Fund" who have made this classic musical opportunity available to our community. Our Diocesan Event Welcomers will greet, welcome, and seat our guests— directing traffic. Come enjoy a wonderful treat for the spirit!

FAITH FORMATION NEWS!

Christian Initiation We continue our prayers for our newly initiated members, the neophytes, as they grow in their understanding of the Mysteries of Faith. Please keep them in prayer.

Perhaps you know someone who has expressed interest in you as a Catholic. Invite them to come and learn more about Catholicism. There is an open-door to all who are casually curious, seriously seek-ing or firmly committed to becoming Catholic. Now is an ex-cellent time to inquire. Our RCIA process is a year-round ex-perience. It does not have a beginning or ending date, like a school year calendar.

RCIA meets on Wednesday evenings at 6:00 p.m. in the parish Media Center. On April 13th we continue the period of Mysta-gogy as the neophytes spend time reflecting on the many bless-ings of the Easter event in their lives and talk about “The Life of Prayer.” Come share your faith and explore Catholicism with us! For more information, contact Donna Murphy, 270/852-8424, or [email protected].

Faith Formation Classes Faith Formation Classes will resume next weekend, April 17th. Enjoy the break, but find time to share faith and the joy of Easter.

First Eucharist Parent/Child Meeting Those preparing for the Sacrament of Holy Eu-charist and their parents have an important meeting on Monday, April 11th, (the Monday

immediately after Spring Break) at 6:30 p.m. in the Community Center.

Confirmation Formation Confirmation Formation continues with our eighth gathering on Wednesday, April 13th, 6:00-8:00 p.m. in the Youth House. Jacques and Yu-landa Williams will be facilitating this session. Lily Moore’s family will provide the snacks. Our topic is: The Holy Spirit.

Prayer Shawl Ministry We have revived the St. Stephen Cathedral Prayer Shawl Min-istry. This compassionate outreach in our community is open to anyone who can or is willing to learn to crochet, knit, weave or sew and would be willing to share your talents and resources with those in need of comfort during an illness or loss. We will meet on the Third Wednesday of each month (April 20th) at 3:00 pm and the First Tuesday of each month (May 3rd) at 10:00 am, in the Media Center. You can also contribute to this

ministry by providing yarn. Contact Donna Murphy (270/852-8424, or [email protected]) for specifics re-garding yarn or for more information about this ministry.

Jubilee Year of Mercy

April 10, 2016 Third Sunday of Easter How appropriate today’s Gospel for this Jubilee Year of Mercy, both because of the “breakfast” Jesus provides (“a charcoal fire with fish on it and bread”) and the num-ber of fish in Peter’s net (“one hundred fifty-three”) (John 21:11–12). Of the fish, Saint Augustine suggests that the roasted fish is the suffering Christ. Saint Gregory the Great adds that Christ lowered himself to swim in the “water” of our humanity; to be caught in the “net” of our death; to be “roasted” in his Passion on the fire of suffer-ing. Saint Jerome claims that “one hundred fifty-three” represents the full number of known species of fish, signi-fying that the Church’s “net” has room for all our widely diverse humanity, securing our unity-in-diversity in the hands of Peter and his successors. Having received God’s mercy as “the beating heart of the Gospel,” may the Church—we—“pattern [our] behavior after the Son of God who went out to everyone without excep-tion” (Misericordiae Vultus, 12). —Peter Scagnelli, Copyright © J. YOUTH GROUP NEWS!

Litany of Thanks— For all those who gener ously serve

God and this Parish!

Forming Good Stewards Good stewards are formed by other good stewards!

“Lord, you know everything; you know that I love you.”

After his Resurrection Jesus reveals Himself for a third time to seven of His disciples who have been fishing all night on the Sea of Tiberias [Galilee]. He ask them, “Children, have you caught anything to eat?” In many ways their faith was like that of a child. The scene is a reminder of His first call to them to become fishers of men. Jesus prepares and shares with them a breakfast of the fish they caught. Three times Jesus ask Simon Peter, “Do you love me?” Peter, who had denied Jesus three times, now proclaims his love for Jesus three times, then adds, “Lord you know everything; you know that I love you.” Peter reveals that his faith in Jesus has matured. When we encounter Jesus in the people and events in our life He is asking us, “Do you love me?” How do we respond? Is our faith in Jesus like that of a child. Or is it constantly maturing such that we have no doubt that He is God and that He knows what is in our heart? Is our faith in Jesus as strong as Simon Peter? How do we demonstrate our faith in Jesus?
