The First Apparition of Our Lady of Fatima On May 13, 1913, Our Lady appeared to three children in Fatima, Portugal. She said, “I come from heaven.” She asked them to come to this same spot every 13th of the month for the next sixth months, promising later on to tell them who she was and what she desired for them to do.

Lucia spoke for the three of them. She asked if Jacinta, Francisco, and she would all go to heaven. Our Lady promised that yes, all three would, but that Francisco would have many rosaries to pray first before he could go. Lucia asked about a couple friends of theirs, Maria and Amelia, who had died. Our Lady said that Maria is in heaven, but that Amelia would be in purgatory until the end of the world.

“Are you willing to offer yourselves to God to bear all the sufferings He wants to send you, as an act of reparation for the sins by which He is offended, and for the conversion of sinners?” Our Lady asked next. They said yes, and Our Lady promised that God would give them comfort in their suffering. A light came from her hands and in it the three children saw themselves in God, more clearly than they had ever seen themselves before. They fell prostrate in adoration of Our Lord. Our Lady eventually spoke, “Recite the rosary every day in order to obtain peace for the world and the end of the war.”

The children in that light especially encountered the sadness of God at the sins of man, and Francisco especially took upon himself a special mission to console the sadness of God by his manner of life.

In this first apparition, Our Lady teaches that the rosary has the power to end wars. It’s something that Catholic nations of old already knew: the Battle of Lepanto in 1571, for example, was won by the power of the rosary and the miraculous intercession of Our Lady. In all of the crusades, the majority of people stayed behind in Europe to pray and fast for success. But a new war means new rosaries must be prayed by the new generation, so Our Lady requested rosaries again.

They hear that while one friend is already in heaven, their friend Amelia will be in purgatory until the end of the world. Some scoff at the thought that a child could be in purgatory for so long, but Lucia never in her life doubted the words of Our Lady. When asked about it later, she reflected on purgatory. She stressed that we need to do reparation for our sins throughout this life. If we do not sufficiently purify ourselves in this life, we’ll need to be purified before heaven. It’s a humbling reminder: if little Amelia has such time in purgatory the sins she did not do reparation for, then I have to get to work myself on my own reparation.

We’ll continue with the other apparitions at Fatima in the weeks to come.

Dear Parishioners of St. Simon, I wanted to make you aware of the upcoming schedule of work within our church, for the installation of our new sound system. Mr. Chris Sauer of the Avid Group will begin working on Monday, January 30th, after the 8:15am Mass. Work will be completed, hopefully, by Friday, February 17th. Our Mass schedule will not be affected – we will still have our normal parish Mass schedule every day. However, what will be affected is our normal Tuesday Adoration. Eucharistic Adoration will be canceled on January 31st, February 7th, and February 14th, due to the on-going work in the church for our new sound system. Here are some other near-by parishes that have Eucharistic Adoration that you could attend:

• St. Justin Martyr - adoration from 8:30/9am to midnight Monday through Thursday. They have a door code that can be obtained by call in the parish office at 843-8482 and select option 1.

• Assumption - adoration 24/7 at Salesian House, the former convent on their property. It is to the right of church, and the door to it is on the left side. There is also a code needed for it which can be obtained by calling the parish office at 487-7970.

• St. Catherine Laboure - adoration chapel 24/7 that requires a key code; please call the rectory at 843-3245 to obtain the code.

• Seven Holy Founders - Adoration in the Ursuline Chapel in the parish center on Tuesdays, from 7am - 9pm. It too requires a key code that can be obtained by calling the parish office at 638-3938.

• Mary, Mother of the Church - Adoration on Tuesdays from 9am-9pm; Wednesday from 9am-6pm; and Thursdays from 4pm-9pm in their Caton Chapel.

I hope you have a healthy and holy week! St. Simon the Apostle, pray for us! Sincerely, Fr. Brad

January 22, 2017 - 3rd Sunday in Ordinary Time “He called them, and immediately they left their boat and their father and followed Him.” Matthew 4:22 Just as Jesus called the first apostles, He calls each of us to follow Him, too. Not everyone is called to leave their business or family behind, but we are expected to put God first in everything. Everything from our time in daily prayer, our talent in participating in one of our parish ministries and our treasure to support the financial needs of our parish mission.

Dynamic Catholic, Alive! – Metanoia Today, Jesus invites us to an experience of μετάνοια, a Greek word that refers to repentance or a conversion of heart and mind. This process of μετάνοια can occur every day of our lives as we week to more closely adhere to the Lord of our lives by praying for grace to cooperate with the Holy Spirit. The Kingdom of God is present among us in the sacramental life of the Church, especially in the Holy Eucharist, and when we engage in acts of charity and the works of mercy. We can encounter Jesus Christ in our brothers and sisters in need. First, we must enter more deeply into prayer and encounter the Lord anew. Once our prayer matures, we can experience greater renewal and conversion. archstl.org/dynamic
