Message from Fr. Brad: St. Simon the Apostle Thirteenth Sunday in Ordinary Time June 30, 2019

Please pray for the repose of the soul of Mary Cibulka. May her soul and the souls of all the faithful departed rest in peace.

. Dear Parishioners of St. Simon’s, During this past week our new senior associate pastor, Fr. Clark Maes, moved into the rectory, and this weekend you should be able to see him around the parish, especially at the 5pm Mass on Saturday and 9am Mass on Sunday. I’m excited to welcome Fr. Maes to our parish community! With the arrival of Fr. Maes, this means Fr. Tom Santen is officially retired – hooray for Fr. Tom! Fr. Tom will continue to reside here at St. Simon’s, as well as be available to help with the sacramental needs of our parish on Mondays, Fridays, Saturdays, and Sundays. I am very grateful to Fr. Tom for the two years he has been the senior associate pastor here at St. Simon’s, for his dedicated service to our parish, and his willingness to continue to serve – amongst his other ministries – here at St. Simon’s parish! I will be away this weekend, attending a retreat at St. Meinrad Archabbey in Indiana. Finally, registration is open for our Sunday School; this is an opportunity for families to have their young children stay at Simon Says while they attend the 9am Mass. Please see the bulletin for more details about this great program, either to sign-up or to work with the Sunday School program. Wishing you a healthy and holy week! St. Simon the Apostle pray for us! Sincerely, Fr. Brad

SAINT VINCENT DE PAUL ANNUAL FOOD DRIVE

This is our 15th Annual Food Drive. Thanks to your past support we have been donating food to several South County food pantries for 15 years! The food we collect is given to our parish food pantry for emergency handouts,

Affton Christian Food Pantry (ACFP) and St. Catherine la Boure. St. Simon’s SVDP refers the poor and needy within our parish boundaries to ACFP and St. Catherine’s food pantry. These food pantries have fewer donations during the summer months-no school food drives or holiday food drives. This is why we choose to have our Annual Food Drive at this time of year. Items in short supply that these food pantries are requesting are: canned fruit (especially peaches, pears and fruit cocktail), canned tomato products, corn, meal supplements (Knorr side dishes, mashed potatoes), canned tuna, entrees (canned chicken, canned meat, beef stew), canned beans and breakfast/granola bars. Green beans are the one item that they do have plenty. Any and all donations are greatly appreciated. We will be collecting your donations before the 5 pm and 7 am, 9 am & 11 am Masses on July 13th & 14th. SVDP volunteers will be at the doors of the Lower Church Hall to accept your food donations. We will also have a cart in the church lobby for anyone bringing their donation into church. Thank you for helping us to help others. Questions? Call Diane at 845-8442.

Thirteenth Sunday in Ordinary Time Laws of Love

St. Paul has a unique vision of freedom. We often think that freedom means I can do what I want without interference from an outside source, such as a bureaucracy or a dictator. For Paul, freedom is not so much being free from oppression as being free to love and serve those around us. What would stop us from loving others? It could be fear: "I'm not sure I would be able to do any good. I'm afraid of going into a bad neighborhood to help the homeless." Or it could be attachment to possessions or even to our family--the man in the Gospel wasn't free to follow Jesus because he thought it meant leaving his family behind. Paul talks about another kind of freedom when he says that following the Spirit means freedom from the Law (Galatians 5:18). He meant people who were obsessed with keeping all the laws and customs that were part of the Jewish tradition. Taken to an extreme, you would have to memorize every law on the books to be sure you did not break one. The freedom of the Spirit is a life lived out of love. As long as we love one another, we wouldn't have to worry about breaking the law, for God's laws are all examples of how to love one another. (c) J. S. Paluch Co.

Parish Office and Simon Says will be closed on Thursday, July 4th. Please note that there is only one morning Mass on July 4th at 9am.

In today’s Gospel we see how Jesus, on his way to Jerusalem, sent “messenger on ahead of Him.” To be the messengers of God, we must know well what it is God wants to say and do through us, as he sends us out to bring his love to others. In the month of June and throughout the year, you are the “messenger of God” in bringing hope to the poor. Your gifts enables the Society of St. Vincent de Paul to assist families in providing food and emergency help for utility and rent bills.

13th Sunday in Ordinary Time “For you were called to freedom, brothers and sisters. But do not use this freedom as an opportunity for the flesh; rather serve one another through love.”(Galatians 5:13) We like to celebrate the fact that we are free to “live the good life.” But Jesus calls us to a different kind of free-dom. St. Paul reminds us that Jesus sets us free so that we can serve one another, share our gifts and promote God’s work here on earth to glorify His name and not honor ourselves.
