Winning Applause for Serbs Through Dance

In May, officially celebrated in Boston as "the dance month", according tothe local media the celebrated dance spectacle "Riverdance" "met its matchin flying feet, colorful costumes, and high stepping rhythms of Serbian andBalkan dancers". More than 60 talented performers of the Serb folk dancingand music earned praise for their Boston show, named "Celebration of Serbianand other Balkan music and dance".

This ambitious project was conceptualized, planned and organized by a teamof hard working culture enthusiasts, Djordje Lukic and Vera Jovanovic fromHamilton, Ontario, Canada, and Djordje N. Koldzic and Ana S. Trbovich fromBoston, MA. The performance was organized and staged with assistance of agroup of students and young people gathered in the Education Fund SashaAleksic - SAFE, and the Organization of Serb Students of the MassachusettsInstitute of Technology - MOST. The Boston performance gathered some ofmost prominent performers of Serb folk dancing and music from the US andCanada - folk dancing group and orchestra "Kolo" from Hamilton, Canada, folkdancing group "Gracanica" from Boston, and folk dancing group "Rastko" fromnew York. The ambitious program was not significantly disturbed by theunexpected cancellation of the appearance by the famous ethno-musicologistand performer of folk songs Svetlana Stevie, who was denied an entry visa bythe INS.

The concert took place in the biggest performance auditorium of theprestigious MIT, the Kresge Auditorium, with, for this type of performance, high number of 600 spectators. Envisaged as a folklore and musical journeythrough all Serb lands, the two-hour performance was striking for theenergy, coordination, and quality of dance, beauty of costumes, virtuosityof the musicians, and unique beauty of almost forgotten style of folk song, known as "pupevanje". The quality of dance, singing and musicianship isalso indicated by unprecedented support from the audience who stronglyreacted throughout the concert, conclusive with the spontaneous celebrationat the end of the show, when members of the audience rushed to the stage andjoined the performers in song and dance. Entertainment and socializingcontinued during the official fund raising cocktail for the Educational FundSasha Aleksic, and the party thrown by the parishioners of the Serb OrthodoxChurch St. Sava in Boston.

Besides the presentation of the Serb cultural heritage to the Bostonaudience, the concert was dedicated to the future of the Serbian youth. Allproceeds from the sold tickets will be used for assistance to talented poorstudents in Serbia, who will, starting with the next year, begin to receivescholarships from the Educational Fund Sasha Aleksic. This fund, named

after the tragically deceased young Serbian doctor and scientist fromBaltimore, in close cooperation with the educational foundation "Studenica",besides provision of scholarships for students in Serbia, also hopes toassist in recovery of the educational system in the homeland.

The organizers of the concerts are indebted to generous sponsors, whoinvested $10,000 in this sizeable production and without whose assistancethe performance would not have been possible. The sponsors are folk dancinggroup "Kolo" from Hamilton, Canada, Serbian-American Alliance ofNew England(SANE) from Boston, MIT Graduate Student Council, Sit Speedy, a print shopfrom Chelsie, Harvard University Kokkalis Program for Southeastern andCentral Europe, and Hermes phone company. Thanks to sponsors, all costswere covered in advance, so that all proceedings from the sold tickets willbe used for assistance through Educational Fund Sasha Aleksic.

The significance of the concert for a fairly small Serb community in Bostonwas multifaceted. It was one of the best organized and promotedpresentations of the Serb culture and heritage ever staged in Boston, thecity which cannot boast with a large Serb diaspora. Similarly, it shouldnot be neglected that the concert managed to draw a significant audience onthe Veteran's Day weekend, when residents of Boston traditionally leave thecity, on one of the first warm weather long weekends of the year. Theconcert has also managed to collect significant funds for the EducationalFund Sasha Aleksic.

The success of the "Celebration of Serb and other Balkan music and dance" isonly the latest success in the several-years-long efforts of the SerbOrthodox Church St. Sava in Boston, and non-profit organizationSerb-American Alliance ofNew England, and a fitting sequel to the lastyear's success of the Serb students from MIT, who with a lot ofmediaattention presented to the Boston audience celebrated Serb violinist StefanMilenkovic. The success of the concert is the best indicator ofhow muchcan be achieved with hard and persistent work of a group of enthusiasts onthe improvement of the Serb image in the US.

Concerning Death

"And just as it is appointed for men to die once" (Hebrews, 9:27). These words of St. Pauland the history of all humanity teach us beyond any doubt that we will all die. Exceptionssuch as the case of the Prophet Elias, who was taken up to the heavens, can only occur by amiracle or by divine intervention. The law is death for all. This, of course, is a result of sin.Man was created immortal. Sin made him mortal. "The wages of sin is death"-spiritualdeath and physical death (Romans, 6:23).

Everyone thinks about and fears death, for obviously different reasons, but this is the truth.Let us see, though, what death is, and then see if we should fear death or life or evenourselves.

When people think of death they put in their minds catastrophe and the end. This is nothow things are. Death is a stage and a starting point. It is neither the end, nor a catastrophe. It is a change of circumstances. It is birth.

Just as the embryo grows in the womb ofits mother for nine months and is then born, sotoo man in his earthly life works for his salvation, and then he dies. In other words, he isborn into eternity. The child that is born is born crying. Why? The reason is that it does notknow where it is going. It fears the unknown. We who know the reality of the situation donot cry when a child is born, but are happy. The same applies to the person who dies. Hecries and thinks about death because he is afraid ofthe unknown. Christ who "has becomethe first born from the dead" has told us everything. But then why are Christians afraid ofdeath?

Christians are afraid of death for three main reasons: a) they do not have enough faith inChrist, b) they do not live a holy, but rather a sinful life and are therefore afraid, and c)they know that after death repentance for salvation no longer exists and so they are afraidof death and the uncertainty that it brings for them personally.

Non-christians are afraid of death for the same reasons, if they have some faith, but alsobecause they do not know the things that follow after death. Non-believers are afraid ofdeath because they consider it catastrophe and the end. But it is not. It is, as we said, a stageand a starting point.

Christians should not be afraid of death. More than death they should fear their earthly life.In essence and actuality they should not be afraid of their earthly life. They should feartheir bad selves. They should fear their unrepentance and disbelief.

Christ, Who became man for us, were crucified and died on the cross, descended to Hadesand were raised up and became "the first born from the dead," Who told us "he whobelieves in me, though he die, yet shall he live"(John, 11:25), You, Lord, help us. Give usfaith. Teach us about death. Make us not to fear death. Give us Your grace so that we maywork out our eternal salvation in our earthly life, be victorious over our sinful selves, andnot remain in our sinful state--our unrepentant state. Help us to live and grow in a state ofrepentance, to think of death for what it is, a stage and starting point for eternity, abirthday in Your heavenly Kingdom, and a return to our fatherly home. We thank You,Lord.
