Standing With God
...God chose the lowly and despised of the world, those who count for nothing...1: Corinthians 1:28 When I was in elementary school, I won and essay contest on the topic of discrimination and exclusion by making a case for what is was like to be left-handed in a predominantly right-handed world. As a child who lived with unconscious privilege, I wrote from my limited understanding of what it felt like to be left out of the equation, to be invisible or absent from decisions that affected my world. Today, I have a much more profound awareness of what it means to count for nothing. My eyes have been opened thanks to those who are not at the table, those whom society ignores, discounts, dismisses. By their side is where Jesus, the wisdom of God, chooses to be. And we are blessed when our values and choices place us in the company he keeps.
Sister Chris Koellhoffer, I.H.M. Living Faith, Daily Catholic Devotions, January, February, March 2017
Pope Francis on Unity: “Unity does not imply uniformity; it does not necessarily mean doing everything together or thinking in the same way. Nor does it signify a loss of identity. Unity in diversity is actually the opposite: it involves the joyful recognition and acceptance of the various gifts which the Holy Spirit gives to each one and the placing of these gifts at the service of all members of the Church. It means knowing how to listen, to accept differences, and having the freedom to think differently and express oneself with complete respect towards the other who is my brother or sister. Do not be afraid of differences!”

A NOD TO OUR YOUTH
When I was in high school, I was very involved in minis-try at our local church in Northern Philippines. I was a cantor, lector and altar server, I assisted in barrio masses and helped the priest when he visited the sick in the summer. I was also involved in the art and environ-ment of our mission chapel, and was part of the core leadership team of our youth group. As I review my personal story of becoming a priest, a full-pledged servant of the Lord and His Church, I realize that my experience of serving in ministry as a youth helped me understand what God was calling me to do with my life.
This is why when I found out that our Hearts of Hope Youth Group has taken the initiative to be more involved in liturgical ministry, I was very much elated. This weekend, at the 4PM Saturday Com-munity Mass, our youth will show us what’s it like to keep the faith alive, by leading the ministries as lectors, ushers, and ministers of communion. I know that this is also coming from their already deepened faith and love of God, but I also want to pay homage to their parents who are always there to encourage and guide them, as well as Ken and Michelle Barrie, for their untiring devotion to the formation of our Catholic Youth in Kankakee.
Sometimes, it is so easy to generalize our youth as self-absorbed, uncaring, or immature, not ready for ministry. But in my experience of youth ministry, I have found that our young ones have so much passion about their faith, and are truly seriously in love with God. If we give them the chance to express it, I have no doubt that they can surprise us with their great love and commitment to serve God’s people. I think, for example, of the years of hard work that our youth offer during their annual mission in Pembroke. In fact, it is quite honorable that our youth already deal with many expecta-tions from teachers, coaches, parents and society at large, yet they still also would like to spend a week to help the poor and under-privileged in our community.
As I close this article, I want to specially address our dear youth group: “I want to personally say thank you to you all who have embraced the liturgical ministry willingly. I want to underline for you that it is a privilege to serve the holy mass, to serve the people of God, to serve God Himself. I say thank you, because you are an answered prayer. I always ask God to send more volunteers to our churches, and He sent you. I hope that by your initiative to be part of the liturgies of our church, you become inspired to remain faithful to the church of Jesus Christ, founded upon the apostles, that you fall in love even more with the Church and with God Himself.
I just finished doing some games and fellowships with the young ones in our village. My mother organized a children’s choir before Christmas, and she is continuing to keep them together, and organ-ize them as a regular choir for our village chapel. Now we are look-ing at the possibility of doing some catechesis and fellowship for them on a regular basis. I thought of our youth as I played games and offered some encouragement to the youth here in the Philip-pines, realizing, that the youth is not the future; the youth is also now the present in our churches! God bless you.
Forever in this holy bond, Fr. Sunny Castillo

A MESSAGE FROM FR. ROY
The gospel reading of this Sunday lay open to us the beatitudes, the source of true happiness. Happiness is that which everyone seeks 24/7, and seven days a week. But often times we do not get it as we wish because we do
not knock at the right place. There are things and places, which can bring us semi-happiness but not a lasting one. For a true and real happiness Jesus proposes the beatitudes but it is paradoxical in our point of view. Because we equate happiness with power, influence, wealth, health and beauty. In fact, if anybody other than Jesus had proposed them, we might just have considered them as too extreme. But Jesus meant what he said and practiced what he taught.
In both Matthew and Luke, the Beatitudes are a “series of bombshells” or “flashes of lightning followed by thunder of surprise and shock" because Jesus reverses our “natural” assumption that happiness lies in riches, power, pleasure, and comfort. We believe in personal pride; Jesus blesses poverty of spirit. We seek pleasure; Jesus blesses those who mourn. We see the prosperity of aggressive people; Jesus blesses the meek. We love good food and drink; Jesus blesses those who hunger and thirst for righteousness. He challenges his listeners to find fulfillment of their needs in God in their particular socio-economic context. The peasants, the farm workers

and the artisans of the villages in Palestine were the oppressed class. The majority of them had no political power or rights. In contrast to them were the rich and powerful, who owned most of the land, collaborated with the hated Romans, controlled the Temple cult, and interpreted the laws of God. Jesus addresses this situation in his Beatitudes.
If Jesus can propose the beatitudes then Satan also can do the same. I was so surprised to see the beatitudes of Satan in the modern world. They are: Blessed are those who are too tired, too busy, too distracted to spend an hour once a week with their fellow Christians in Church - they are my best workers. Blessed are those who wait to be asked and expect to be thanked - I can use them in my business. Blessed are those who are touchy. Soon they will stop going to Church - verily, they shall be my missionaries. Blessed are those who sow gossip and trouble - they are my beloved children. Blessed are those who have no time to pray - for they are MY prey. Blessed are those who gossip - for they are my secret agents. Blessed are you when you read this and think it has everything to do with other people, and nothing to do with you - I've got room for YOU at my inn. Therefore let us place our eyes to the Beatitudes of Jesus and be blessed always.
Have a Blessed Week,
Rev. Roy Jacob, CMI

STEWARDSHIP - A Way of LifeToday’s readings make clear that God’s ways are not the status quo. Each reading demonstrates God’s glory in the most unlikely of people – the weak, the humble, the lowly. Conventional wisdom is rendered moot by God. These readings challenge us to reflect on our own biases as to who is worthy and who is to be admired. Whose ideals are we striving to live by?

Lord God, You alone are the source of every good gift, of the vast array of our universe, and the mystery of each human life. We praise you and we thank you for your great power and your tender, faithful love.
Everything we are and everything we have is your gift, and after having created us you have given us into the keeping of Your Son, Jesus Christ.
Fill our minds with His truth and our hearts with His love, that in His Spirit we may be bonded together into a community of faith, a parish family, a caring people.
In the Name and Spirit of Jesus, we commit ourselves to be good stewards of the gifts entrusted to us, to share our time, our talent, our material gifts as an outward sign of the Treasure we hold in Jesus. Amen.

Mats For The HomelessThere will be another session in St. Rose Church Hall to work on transforming ordinary grocery
plastic bags into very useful, comfortable, dry mats that can be carried lightly from place to place. This work of mercy serves a dual purpose – besides creating a useful object, all these bags are spared from ending up in a garbage dump. This is easy work, all ages can do it, and its pleasant visiting with new and old friends as we work. Please join in this endeavor. The date is Wednesday, February 1 at 1:30 p.m. in the lower church hall.

2012. He vacilado por dos razones. Primero,
No obstante, ofreceré unos co-
mentarios.
soluciones a nuestros problemas difíciles.
Brothers and Sisters in Christ,
A number of you have urged me to provide
some guidance to the people of the Diocese
of Joliet as we approach the 2012 elections.
I have hesitated for two reasons. First, as a
religious leader, my task is to teach doctrinal
and moral truths, which do not match up with
party platforms. Second, precisely because
my voice is not clearly Democratic or Republi-
can, I am doubtful that many people will lis-
ten at this particular time. I think it is better
for me to fulfill my teaching office in a consis-
tent fashion, day by day, through a variety of
formats. Nevertheless, I will offer a few com-
ments.
In a democratic society one’s convictions are translated into votes. For many years fewer
than sixty percent of eligible Americans have
voted in the Presidential elections, and fewer
than forty percent have voted in other years.
Catholics who are eligible to vote have a
moral obligation to do so.
Today’s stark ideological divisions, along with bitter partisan politics, have made finding
solutions to our problems difficult. There are
indeed some moral issues that permit no
compromise.

Below are members of St. James the Apostle and St. Teresa church with gifts brought for our children. Each year they share a meal together before organizing all the bags that will be given out to the children on Epiphany. St. James the Apostle Church from Glen Ellyn has been giving gifts to our children for over 20 years for the Tres Reyes Magos celebration. Thank you and God Bless You and your church for your generosity.
