“I did not come to abolish the law, but to fulfill it.” As Moses received the ten commandments from God on mount Sinai for the Israelites, so the Lord Jesus gives the new commandments to the new people of God, the Church, on the mount of the beatitudes. The readings this weekend speak about the law, commandments, the wisdom of God, which lead to eternal life. This law is incomparable to the wisdom of this age, which passes away. The little ones or, as St. Paul says, the mature ones, believe in this wisdom of God through his Holy Spirit and fulfill the law of God. If we reflect on the gospel of today, Jesus raised the ten commandments to a higher degree. The Mosaic law said “You shall not kill”, but Jesus says, “whoever is angry with his brother will be liable to judgment.” If people at the time of Jesus struggled to fulfill the Mosaic law, then can we imagine people fulfilling an even more difficult law. Jesus tells us not only is murder wrong, but so is the mental attitude of hatred and unforgiveness that we may choose to carry around within us. Even if we never act it out by killing someone, an attitude of hatred and revenge will affect not only the person who holds on to such feelings, but also his or her relationships with others. Sometimes we may have moments of extreme anger towards someone, but we can repent and ask for forgiveness. We can talk it out and reconcile with the person whom we find it hard to love. This humble attitude may prevent us from holding on to those angry feelings or nurturing them. Similarly, adultery is not only wrong, but anyone who looks at a woman with lust has already committed adultery in his heart. Doctors and nutritionists have been telling us for years that what we feed our bodies is going to affect our health. And so Jesus is telling us that what we feed our minds and hearts is going to affect our relationships with God and our brothers and sisters. Jesus goes to the root of the problem, which is our heart wounded by original sin. After reading today’s gospel, we can ask Jesus as the disciples once did, “Then, who can be saved?” If we think that we can fulfill the law of the Lord on our own strength, then we surely will feel hopeless. However, the law of the Lord is for the humble one who acknowledge themselves their misery in front of God and ask the Lord constantly to grant us his Holy Spirit not to abolish the law, but to fulfill it. Jesus would not give us law to condemn us. On the contrary, he gives us his law that we may have life in abundance. We need to feed our life with the life of prayer, the sacraments, and repentance so that we may grow in faith and avoid the temptations to sin. When we act in this way, then we are choosing the way to life.

CONGRATULATIONS TO OUR FLOWER OF CARMEL LAY CARMELITES! Congratulations to those making their Final Profession as Lay Carmelites: Nancy Buschman, Doug Buschman, Lizabeth Fisher, Stan Fisher, and Sandy Millavec. Anna Ryan made her profession on January 19 immediately prior to her death. The Lay Carmelite Order of the Blessed Virgin Mary (historically known as the Third Order of Carmel) is an association mainly of lay persons. Its members, responding to a special call of God, freely and deliberately commit themselves “to live in the following of Jesus Christ” according to the charism, traditions, and spirit of Carmel under the authority of the Prior General of the Carmelite Order. The members, though not in Religious Life, choose to live out their baptismal commitment according to the spirit of the Carmelite Order. Members are brothers and sisters of the Carmelite Family and sharers in the same call to holiness and in the same mission of the Carmelite Order. Becoming a Lay Carmelite is a vocation for anyone - married or single, man or female - they focus on developing an interior prayer life. The Flower of Carmel LCC welcomes newcomers to learn more about Carmelite spirituality. They meet on the first and third Wednesdays of each month. On first Wednesdays, they begin with Taizé Prayer in the Historic Chapel, 7:00pm. INFO: https://flowerofcarmellcc.weebly.com

FAITH IN ART: THE STAINED GLASS WINDOWS OF THE EVANGELIST SYMBOLS (PART 1) One of the most exquisite additions to our worship space are the four stained-glass windows representing the Evangelists St. Matthew (a divine man), St. Mark (a winged lion), St. Luke (a winged ox) and St. John (a rising eagle). How did these symbols become associated with each Gospel writer? St. Irenaeus (140-202 A.D.) explained the symbolism as follows: St. Matthew is represented by a divine man because the Gospel highlights Jesus’ entry into this world, first by presenting His family lineage — “A family record of Jesus Christ, Son of David, son of Abraham” (Mt 1:1) — and His incarnation and birth: “Now this is how the birth of Jesus Christ came about” (Mt 1:18). “This then,” according to St. Irenaeus, “is the Gospel of His humanity; for which reason it is, too, that the character of a humble and meek man is kept up through the whole Gospel.” St. Mark, represented by the winged lion, references the Prophet Isaiah when he begins his gospel: “Here begins the Gospel of Jesus Christ, the Son of God. In Isaiah the prophet it is written: ‘I send my messenger before you to prepare your way: a herald’s voice in the desert, crying, “Make ready the way of the Lord, clear Him a straight path.’” “The voice in the desert crying” reminds one of a lion’s roar, and the prophetical spirit descending to earth reminds one of a “winged message.” The lion also signified royalty, an appropriate symbol for the Son of God.
