Kingdom Come: Scott Hahn Reflects on the Second Sunday in Advent "The kingdom of heaven is at hand," John proclaims. And the Liturgy today paints us a vivid portrait of our new king and the shape of the kingdom He has come to bring. The Lord whom John prepares the way for in today's Gospel is the righteous king prophesied in today's First Reading and Psalm. He is the king's son, the son of David - a shoot from the root of Jesse, David's father He will be the Messiah, anointed with the Holy Spirit , endowed with the seven gifts of the Spirit - wisdom, understanding, counsel, strength, knowledge, piety and fear of the Lord. He will rule with justice, saving the poor from the ruthless and wicked. His rule will be not only over Israel - but will extend from sea to sea, to the ends of the earth. He will be a light, a signal to all nations. And they will seek Him and pay Him homage. In Him, all the tribes of the earth will find blessing. The covenant promise to Abraham , renewed in God's oath to David , will be fulfilled in His dynasty. And His name will be blessed forever. In Christ, God confirms His oath to Israel's patriarchs, Paul tells us in today's Epistle. But no longer are God's promises reserved solely for the children of Abraham. The Gentiles, too, will glorify God for His mercy. Once strangers, in Christ they will be included in "the covenants of promise". John delivers this same message in the Gospel. Once God's chosen people were hewn from the rock of Abraham. Now, God will raise up living stones - children of Abraham born not of flesh and blood but of the Spirit. This is the meaning of the fiery baptism He brings - making us royal heirs of the kingdom of heaven, the Church.

Advent Parish Mission - December 12-14

St. Rose of Lima Parish will host an Advent Parish Mission titled, “The Songs of Luke”, based on the three canticles in Luke’s Gospel: The Magnificat (the Song of Mary), the Benedictus (the Song of Zechariah), and the Nunc Dimittis (the Song of Simeon). The 90-minute presentations will be Monday-Wednesday, December 12-14, 7:30pm. Presenter Dan Dúet of Two-Twelve Ministries here in San Antonio will be the facilitator and, although not fluent in Spanish, will still offer the main points of each presentation in both English and Spanish. Mr. Dúet has gained a reputation as being a lively and engaging speaker in the Church as he travels throughout the country giving both spoken and music events. Each of the canticles will highlight lessons for all Catholics to consider as we strive to deepen our spiritual lives. These lessons include acceptance, service, and obedience. As a Lay Person, Mr. Dúet offers the presentations in a very down-to-earth, practical format.

Highlight on Presentation 1: “The Magnificat” To prepare for this presentation please read and reflect upon Luke 1:26-56. We all know about Mary’s “YES” but this presentation will delve even deeper. Ask the Holy Spirit to have words or entire verses stand out to you as you read and reflect. What is Mary’s first concern after she says ‘Yes’? What was it about Mary’s arrival to Elizabeth’s home that stirred the Holy Spirit in both Elizabeth and the baby in her own womb? What prophecy is contained within the Magnificat itself? How are these verses from Luke’s Gospel a challenge to us today? What are we called and challenged to? Highlight on Presentation 2: “The Benedictus” To prepare for this presentation please read and reflect upon Luke 1:5-25 and 57-80. Did you notice? When Mary questioned the Angel, she was reassured. When Zechariah questioned the angel, he was reprimanded and punished. Why? What did Zechariah learn during the time of his being mute? Why was he eventually allowed to speak out loud and what was the very first thing he did when God restored his speech to return? Highlight on Presentation 3: “The Nunc Dimmitis” To prepare for this presentation please read and reflect upon Luke 2:22-38. Just who is this man named Simeon? The Scriptures tell us very little about him and yet in these few verses we learn so much! How God blesses those who are obedient to Him! And what about the prophetess Anna? We see only a glimpse of her and yet her actions, bringing the Mission to a close, provide a clear insight to all of us about what the “New Evangelization” calls and challenges us to.

Volunteer Needed: The Parish is looking for someone who has experience in maintaining a website to take over

and manage our church website. This is a volunteer position and would entail approximately 10 hours of your time

each week. If this is something you can help out with, please call the Parish Office and leave your name and number

so we can get in touch with you, or send an email to [email protected].

Anniversary of the Dedication of St. Rose of Lima Church

This Sunday, December 4, we celebrate the Anniversary of the Dedication of St. Rose of Lima Church. It

was 11 years ago this date that our former Archbishop, Jose Gomez, dedicated our new church building.

For our parish, this is considered a “holy day” and we celebrate it yearly. You may have noticed that the

4 crosses holding candles hanging in the church where the bishop anointed the walls with sacred chrism

were lit in remembrance of this special occasion.

Prayer in honor of St Rose of Lima God our Father, for love of you St. Rose gave up everything to devote herself to a life of penance. By the

help of her prayers may we imitate her selfless way of life on earth and enjoy the fullness of your blessings

in heaven. Grant this through our Lord Jesus Christ, Your Son, who lives and reigns with You and the Holy

Spirit, one God, for ever and ever.

Amen.
