Communion for Sick and Homebound Parishioners St. Rita ministers provide Communion home visits. Contact the Parish Office • 355.1292 or Jill Muhs • 355.9810 • [email protected].

Anointing of the Sick Please notify us (355.1292) as early as possible for the Anointing of the Sick, the sacrament intended for the seriously ill or dying. It is Our Lord’s special presence and companionship in serious time of need. Anointing may take place in the home, at the hospital or elsewhere and as often as once a month. If someone should die without anointing, remember that the desire to receive is sufficient and the Lord cares!

If You Should Experience the Loss of a Loved One Please call us at 355.1292 If you feel you will be in need, or your loved one has passed, we will assist in making arrangements with your chosen funeral directors; refer you to our liturgy and music directors; and offer you helpful guidelines and a book that will aid in the selection of readings for the Mass or Memorial Service. Areas we can help you with prior to the passing may help in the planning of funeral services. We know that this can be a tough time and we want you to know that your parish is there for you. PLEASE UNDERSTAND we only have one resident priest; sometimes arrangements for another priest may be needed.

SAINT RITA OF CASCIA CHURCH 3 REV. MSGR. RICHARD KREKELBERG

PASTOR’S CORNER

Dear Parishioners and Visitors to Saint Rita this Easter,

I feel compelled this year to share with you the “risen life” words of our beloved Holy Father, Pope Francis:

What does it mean that Jesus is risen? It means that the love of God is stronger than evil and death itself;

it means that the love of God can transform our lives and let those desert places in our hearts bloom.

The love of God can do this!

As I read these words from the Holy Father last year it struck me that, more powerful than the words themselves was Pope Francis’ own conviction and personal living out of those words—his evident personal relationship with the Risen Christ. We are all taken with the pope’s obvious preference for the poor, his absolute delight in children and youth, and his bold tackling of current issues and challenges within our Church—but no one seems to be asking, “How does he do all of this?” or “How IS he all of this?” We seem to simply accept Pope Francis’ truth and his authenticity. At the same time, I can’t help but think, the pope’s secret is that he figured out a long time ago how (in the words of St. Paul) “to wear Christ like a garment” through life.

And so, please join me in praying to the Risen One this Easter Sunday, that we too might rediscover the power sown into our Baptismal garments, to live each day in the knowledge that God’s love is stronger that any evil we may encounter and stronger than death itself. May we be empowered—even now—to look and see beyond the grave. We together pray that our Lenten journey has afforded us the opportunity to be so transformed by God’s love, that hope has taken root in whatever may have constituted our personal or family desert places, and that joy may come to full bloom there. May people from any and all walks of life be attracted to the Risen Christ they see and experience in us. Finally, let us pray, then, that this Easter 2014, in our world, in our homes, in our parish of St. Rita, and in the Universal Church, may be like no other!

—Msgr. Richard

TODAY’S READINGS

When Christ your life appears,

then you too will appear with him in glory.

—Colossians 3:4

CHRIST HAS RISEN

Where is your sting, O death? Where is your victory, O hell?

Christ has risen, and you are overthrown. Christ has risen, and the demons have fallen.

Christ has risen, and the angels rejoice. Christ has risen, and life reigns.

Christ has risen, and not one dead rests in the grave. For Christ having risen from the dead became the first-fruits

of them that slept. To him be glory and majesty to ages

of ages. Amen. —Byzantine Pentekostarion

Did You Know? April is National Child Abuse Prevention Month. One of the most important tools for law enforcement to use in the case of a missing child is an updated, good school-portrait quality, head-and-

shoulders color photograph, in which the face of the child is clearly seen. The background should be plain or solid so it does not distract from the subject. When possible, the photograph should be in a digitized form and available on a compact disk (CD) as opposed to just a hard copy.

For more information, contact the Archdiocesan Safeguard the Children Office 213/627-7227. For particular help, you may call the Victims Assistance Ministry 213/637-7650.

St. Rita Men’s Retreat—Weekend of March 28-30

Another successful spiritual renewal for 28 men of our parish! Thank you to all who took the time from their busy lives to give themselves this very special gift. And a very special thank you to Bill Cosso and his Retreat Team for planning this very special weekend.

The Lenten journey is now complete! The Resurrection of the Lord is our standing invitation to live the Risen Life. Our Risen Life has to be nurtured, whether the life of the newly baptized or the renewed life of those who have passed through Lent’s refining prayer, fasting, and giving alms.

On behalf of our Deacons, our Ministry Leaders, and our Staff, I pray Jesus’ Risen Life in abundance this Easter and beyond. May you find at St. Rita a Faith Community to inspire you and to accompany you on your faith journey.
