First Reading Second Reading Gospel Reading Genesis 2:7-9; 3:1-7 Romans 5:12-19 Matthew 4:1-11
A Message from Father Don
Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ, In today’s Gospel we read how Jesus prepares to begin his ministry by entering a kind of spiritual “training camp.” Alone in the desert, he fasts and prays for forty days. When the devil tries to ambush him with three temptations to disobey God’s will, Jesus is well armed. He defends himself with the word of God by quoting from the Book of Deuteronomy. He refuses to be tricked by false promises of pow-er and glory.
Lent can be a spiritual training camp for us today. It is a time to practice using God’s Word as our defensive weapon against temptation. This week, spend some time reflecting on what spiritual plans you will put into action during Lent. To-day’s passage from the Gospel might suggest that in addition to the traditional prayer and fasting, we spend a few minutes each day reading Scripture. As we begin this special season of prayer, fasting and almsgiving, Lent offers us an opportunity to confront our pride and weakness, to experience a newly deepened relationship with God through Jesus, our model of humility, trust and strength.
Father Tim O’Toole, a priest of the Diocese of Palm Beach, will be visi ng our parish next week and will speak at all of our Masses on behalf of Cross Catholic Outreach. Cross Catholic Outreach was founded to create a meaningful link between parishes in America and the priests and nuns working in the church overseas in the Caribbean, Africa, Asia, Central and South America. Please be as generous as possible in helping out with this Outreach.
