GOSPEL MEDITATION - ENCOURAGE
DEEPER UNDERSTANDING OF SCRIPTURE
5th Sunday of Easter
Are you ready for a trim? In today's Gospel, we hear the
familiar teaching of the vine and the branches. Jesus re-
minds us that if we remain close to him-living in humility,
following God's law, loving our neighbor-we will notice a
positive change in our life and the lives of those around
us. "Whoever remains in me and I in him will bear much
fruit." The Holy Spirit is life-giving. He is fruitful. The
Spirit of God won't refuse grace to a heart that is open.
As we progress through life, learning how to live and
love, we grow. Our personalities flower. We discover
what it is to be a blessing to others. We also experience
lack, loss, and the results of our failures. We know what it
is like to "wither" at times, particularly the times when we
willingly separate ourselves from Jesus. "Just as a branch
cannot bear fruit on its own unless it remains on the vine,
so neither can you unless you remain in me." For most of
us, this experience of being disconnected and off track
generates a desire to return to what is right and good, to
return to the vine.
But this Gospel is more than "Are you in or are you
out?" Even when we remain in God, when we follow
Jesus, we are not exempt from the challenge, the pruning.
"Everyone that [bears fruit] he prunes." A prudent trim is
necessary in the natural world of trees and vines. Dead
wood, broken shoots, and diseased branches need to be
cut back in order for the plant to bear fruit. Jesus wants us
to be healthy! He says as much himself: "By this is my
Father glorified, that you bear much fruit and become my
disciples." Take a look at your life today. Where are you
bearing fruit? Where do you need to be pruned?
Dear Father Teo,
We wish you have a great journey home, be safe
and have a wonderful trip, enjoy your time with
family and friends. You will be missed at Church,
but we are very glad that you will take this time to
go back home for visit.
“Masiyahan sa iyong bakasyon Ama Teo”
Please take care.

NEW EVANGELIZATION
The initial thrust for the “New Evangelization” was pro-
vided by the Second Vatican Council primarily through
“Lumen Gentium (LG), the Dogmatic Constitution on
the Church” and especially “Gaudium et spes (GS), the
Pastoral Constitution on the Church in the Modern
World”. Following the writings of the Early Fathers
(theologians in the first few centuries A.D.), the Council
Fathers reiterated the fact that the Church is the Body of
Christ and there can be no salvation outside this Church
(LG #8). The same document, however, goes on to
explain that the Sacrifice of Christ redeems all sinners
including even those who never heard the Gospel but
sincerely seek God and do His will according to the
dictates of their conscience (LG #16). Another document,
“Ad gentes (AG), Decree on the Church’s Missionary
Activity”, states that the Church has the obligation and
the right to evangelize all humanity. This obligation is
based on the law of love “to share with all the spiritual
goods of this life and the life to come” (AG #7).

St. Raymond’s Christian Mothers News The Christian Mother’s will have their monthly meeting
on Tuesday, May 8, at 8:30 a.m. in the Parish
Social Hall. We will be celebrating the
Blessed Mother Mary and Mother’s Day.
All ladies of the parish are invited to attend.
Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults The final step in the RCIA process is to move from
simply learning about the truths of the Catholic Church
to putting them into practice and actually living the
Faith. Basically, this is the duty of all baptized
Christians. We all must develop and improve our
own understanding of the doctrines and moral guidelines
of Catholicism. Baptism and Confirmation may be a
one-time event but, like Matrimony, they are only the
beginning of a life-long commitment. Without prayer,
frequent Communion and Confession and developing a
personal relationship with Jesus, our Faith becomes
irrelevant and our lives fade into meaningless activity,
suffering without hope, and a love that is only
words. The teachings of Jesus must move from our minds
to our hearts and then to action.
