If you see something, say something

We see this warning in airports and schools, but experts say it’s also a great way for parents to think about Internet safety for their children. One of the best ways to protect children using the Internet is to actually engage with them in what they’re doing: play the games they play and check out their profile pages with them. Discuss online respect and rules for what can and cannot be shared. Regular conversation and monitoring helps keep children safe online.

For more information, read the article by Catholic News Service, “Vigilance by parents and their children

called key to safe internet use.”

For a while it was very fashionable to own pigs as pets. The publicity surrounding these creatures informed us that they were—contrary to their popular image—very clean animals, and also quite smart. Sad to say, sheep will most likely never enjoy this sort of domestic vogue. They are neither clean nor smart and are largely defenseless when left on their own, even in large numbers. The biblical image of us as the flock of sheep is not a particularly flattering one. Sheep without a shepherd are truly sad, because they most likely will perish either from their inability to fend for themselves or from their lack of defenses against predators. Placing ourselves in the heart of this unflattering image can reinforce our faith. Until we come to a profound realization of how much we need a shepherd, we cannot appreciate how deeply blessed we are to have been given a Shepherd, one who laid down his life for us and was raised to life eternal in the Spirit, so he might guide us and we might follow him in faith forever. T ’ R First Reading — All peoples called by God will receive the gift of the Spirit if they repent and are baptized (Acts 2:14a, 36-41). Psalm — The Lord is my shepherd; there is nothing I shall want (Psalm 23). Second Reading — Once we were like straying sheep; but now we have been returned to the shepherd, our guardian (1 Peter 2:20b-25). Gospel — The shepherd leads the sheep out into pastures of abundant life (John 10:1-10). SAINTS PHILIP AND JAMES, APOSTLES May 3

Call Philip the gospel’s “Answer Man.” “Can anything good come out of Nazareth?” Nathaniel asked Philip, who had proclaimed Jesus “the one about whom Moses wrote in the law, and also the prophets” (John 1:45). Jesus asked Philip, “Where can we buy enough food for them to eat?” (John 6:5). Greeks brought Philip their request: “We would like to see Jesus” (John 12:21). Philip’s answer to each question: bring people to Jesus! At the Last Supper, finally, Philip had a request of his own: “Show us the Father!” (John 14:8). Jesus had three last questions for Philip: “You still don’t know me? How can you ask that? Don’t you believe?” And an answer: “I am in the Father and the Father is in me” (John 14:10). Today’s James is not John’s brother, Zebedee’s son, but, tradition says, author of the New Testament Letter of James, who died praying for his murderers in Jesus’ words: “Forgive them, for they know not what they do.” Few historical details for either saint, but lessons aplenty: Bring every question we have and everybody we meet to Jesus; be, as James’ letter challenges, “doers of the word and not hearers only” (James 1:22).

SANTOS FELIPE Y SANTIAGO (Siglo I) 3 de mayo

—Miguel Arias, Copyright © J. S. Paluch Co.

P D W . Let us show proper reverence for the Mass and the Blessed Sacrament by remembering to dress respectfully. Going to mass is a special occasion, not just any ordinary event. Dressing respectfully for Mass reminds us that we are about to encounter our Savior and Redeemer, Jesus Christ, and this is a special occasion.

ARCHBISHOP GOMEZ CALLS ON CALIFORNIA CATHOLICS TO

SUPPORT EXTENDING UNEMPLOYMENT BENEFITS FOR

CHURCH WORKERS Archbishop José H. Gomez is asking California Catholics to support extending unemployment benefits to Church workers under federal emergency legislation addressing dislocations caused by the coronavirus epidemic. Currently, non-profit employees in multiple states do not have access to state unemployment insurance. Faith communities are urging Congress to provide emergency disaster unemployment assistance to workers that are not covered by state unemployment insurance. “As we know, the impact of the coronavirus emergency is being felt profoundly in our Catholic community. Nationwide, the Church has been forced to suspend worship services and close schools and other important offices and ministries, effecting tens of thousands of our employees,” said Archbishop Gomez. “Please join me in asking Congress to extend unemployment benefits to Church workers who might need this relief. Let us stand together in solidarity for our brothers and sisters in this time of trial and need.” California Catholics are asked to contact Senators Dianne Feinstein and Kamala Harris, as well as local representatives, to make sure they are aware of this problem of non-profit employees in multiple states who do not currently have access to state unemployment insurance, and to ask that they support an effective solution.

CATHEDRAL SUNDAY MASS IN ENGLISH WILL BE AVAILABLE TO THE FAITHFUL

VIA FOX 11 LOS ANGELES’ AFFILIATE KCOP CHANNEL 13 DURING THE CORONAVIRUS

PANDEMIC

FOX11 Los Angeles will air the weekly English Sunday Masses, at 10 a.m., from the Cathedral of Our Lady of the Angels, through KCOP Channel 13, an affiliate station of Fox 11 Los Angeles, during the COVID-19 (novel coronavirus) pandemic. The broadcaster aired the Easter Sunday Mass in English celebrated by Archbishop José H. Gomez, which provided thousands of families, especially those with no access to the Internet, the opportunity to gather as a family to celebrate Mass in their home. Since the unprecedented decision to suspend the public celebration of Mass to prevent the spread of COVID-19, Archbishop José H. Gomez continues encouraging the faithful to keep participating in the Holy Mass via television, radio and online. “Even though we cannot publicly gather in communion to celebrate our faith, I encourage our faithful to continue to participate in the Holy Mass via television, radio and online so that we may continue to pray together for the Lord’s grace and mercy in our time of need,” said Archbishop Gomez.

Univision Los Angeles, has been airing and will continue to air daily and Sunday Masses in Spanish at 7 a.m. from the Cathedral directly into homes over the air via Univision’s local UniMás KFTR-TV, Channel 46

since the Archdiocese announced the closure of parishes on March 16.

Catholic media are also helping to bring Holy Mass

directly to Catholic faithful airing Masses in English and Spanish on cable, radio and via the internet on Relevant Radio (930AM), The Catholic Channel on SiriusXM,

Guadalupe Radio and El Sembrador TV and Radio (ESNE).

Catholics can find a listing of available livestreams and

broadcasts of Masses in the Archdiocese at lacatholics.org/mass-for-the-homebound so that they may continue to pray at home with their families and

join to the sacrifice of the Mass. For more information on the efforts of the Archdiocese

of Los Angeles to limit the spread of the pandemic, visit lacatholics.org/emergency/.

radio y vía Internet en Relevant Radio (930AM), The Catholic Channel on SiriusXM, Guadalupe Radio y El

Sembrador TV y Radio (ESNE).
