Adam and Eve were banished from the Garden because of their
disobedience. But Jesus says in today’s Gospel that when we are
obedient to God’s will---when we use our gifts to serve one anoth-
er---we are part of His family. “Whoever does the will of God is
brother and sister and mother to me.” This is the gift, and fruit,
of Baptism.

Dear friends,
This weekend we welcome Archbishop Jackels to our parish to confer the Sacrament of Confirmation on 33 of our high school students. They have spent these months preparing for this sacrament – by praying, by learning, and by doing acts of service for others. In confirmation the Holy Spirit comes to us in a special way, to seal the gift of faith received in baptism. Confirmation strengthens that faith. It is certainly not the completion of anything. We are called to be life-long learners of the faith, to grow ever closer to God until that day we meet him face-to-face in his eternal Kingdom. The seven-fold gifts of the Holy Spirit help us to meet the challenges of daily living, keeping us in touch with Christ. May the Holy Spirit bless our students this day and in the years that lie ahead. I also need to express my sincere gratitude for the wonderful celebration of my 40th anniversary last weekend. I was humbled by the support that so many of you expressed. It will take me a while to get through all the cards and send out thank yous, but let me say special thanks now to Sandra Pickart for planning the special liturgy, to Pam Satern for coordinating the receptions, and to Melanie Martin-Trainor and Mary Swiderski for all the behind-the-scenes coordination. Thanks to all the ministers at the Mass and all the workers at the reception. I am blessed in my vocation, and I am blessed to be pastor of such a wonderful parish. Please also pray that the Holy Spirit will be with me these next days as I make my annual retreat at American Martyrs Retreat House in Cedar Falls. I will also keep you in prayer during these days. —Fr. Phil Thompson

RESOURCE CENTER REVIEW
By What Authority addresses three levels of authority: Scripture and Tradition, the Mag-
isterium, and the Sense of the Faithful. Writ-ten in the spirit of Vatican II, Richard Gail-
lardetz explores contemporary Catholic perspectives and pre-
sents lively discussion of each topic as well as disputed ques-
tions for further reflection.
The Sacrament of Confirmation
The Rite of Confirmation asks a
response of faith from the candidates
as well as from the parish faith
family. We promise to help them
to grow in the grace of the sacrament.
The candidates say “yes” to their faith and to the Holy
Spirit. But first they should ask for the support of the
parish. How can we support them? Our example at Sun-
day worship, the witness of our individual Christian
lives, and our willingness to be people of service to oth-
ers, can be easily seen. Come, Holy Spirit, fill their
lives with the power of your love and renew this com-munity in its call to worship, witness, and service.
Through your generosity, we served 100 families in the
food pantry and we are scheduled to help 42 families
this month with rent and utilities.
The pantry shelves are out of: boxed/ bagged potatoes
jelly/jam
canned veggies other than corn and green beans
and low on the following: macaroni cheese soup
pasta sauce personal care products
toilet paper
As always, we truly appreciate any and all unexpired
items you can share with us including produce!
