17th Sunday in Ordinary Time

First Reading 2 KGS 4:42-44

A man came from Baal-shalishah bringing to Elisha, the man of God, twenty barley loaves made from the firstfruits, and fresh grain in

the ear. Elisha said, "Give it to the people to eat." But his servant objected, "How can I set this before a hundred people?" Elisha

insisted, "Give it to the people to eat." "For thus says the LORD, 'They shall eat and there shall be some left over.'" And when they had

eaten, there was some left over, as the LORD had said.

Responsorial Psalm PS 145 R. The hand of the Lord feeds us; he answers all our needs.

Second Reading EPH 4:1-6

Brothers and sisters: I, a prisoner for the Lord, urge you to live in a manner worthy of the call you have received, with all humility and

gentleness, with patience, bearing with one another through love, striving to preserve the unity of the spirit through the bond of peace:

one body and one Spirit, as you were also called to the one hope of your call; one Lord, one faith, one baptism; one God and Father of all,

who is over all and through all and in all.

Gospel JN 6:1-15

Jesus went across the Sea of Galilee. A large crowd followed him, because they saw the signs he was performing on the sick. Jesus went

up on the mountain, and there he sat down with his disciples. The Jewish feast of Passover was near. When Jesus raised his eyes and

saw that a large crowd was coming to him, he said to Philip, "Where can we buy enough food for them to eat?" He said this to test him,

because he himself knew what he was going to do. Philip answered him, "Two hundred days' wages worth of food would not be enough

for each of them to have a little." One of his disciples, Andrew, the brother of Simon Peter, said to him, "There is a boy here who has

five barley loaves and two fish; but what good are these for so many?" Jesus said, "Have the people recline." Now there was a great deal

of grass in that place. So the men reclined, about five thousand in number. Then Jesus took the loaves, gave thanks, and distributed

them to those who were reclining, and also as much of the fish as they wanted. When they had had their fill, he said to his disciples,

"Gather the fragments left over, so that nothing will be wasted." So they collected them, and filled twelve wicker baskets with fragments

from the five barley loaves that had been more than they could eat. When the people saw the sign he had done, they said, "This is truly

the Prophet, the one who is to come into the world." Since Jesus knew that they were going to come and carry him off to make him king,

he withdrew again to the mountain alone.

St. Pius V Catholic Church July 29, 2018

My dear friends, Many of you know of the Movimiento Familiar Cristiana Catolica. Perhaps you have worked alongside members of MFC in their distinctive blue shirts at the Festival. MFC is one of the most active and powerful movements in the church in our Archdiocese. Thousands of couples in our own Archdiocese (and hundreds at St. Pius V) have participated in the MFC which embraces the words of St. James, “ Be doers of the word, and not merely hearers," and which has as its mission to promote Christ-centered marriage and family life; to help individuals and their families to live the Christian faith in everyday life; and to improve society through actions of love, service, education and example. MFC is such a spiritual force among our Spanish-speaking brothers and sisters that we might well be unaware that the Christian Family Movement began among English-speaking Catholics and continues to be a significant movement among English-speaking Catholics elsewhere in the U.S. I would hope that one day it can serve our entire community in both languages. There are already English-speaking MFC groups in our Archdiocese and I am a clergy resource for one such group here in our local area. All the materials used in MFC/CFM are both English and Spanish which makes it very easy. I urge our English-speaking couples to consider participating in MFC/CFM and particularly urge our bilingual families to look into the great benefits of MFC. You can choose the language you wish. It is a wonderful way to grow in faith, in community and, above all, in your marriage. Look for the blue shirts and ask a member of MFC what it is all about and how to get started or talk to me. I can always find the time to help another group. May God bless the Christian Family Movement and all who seek to “be doers of the word and not merely hearers.” Fr. Joe

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Queridos hermanos y hermanas, La Iglesia en EE. UU. por primera vez tiene su propio Misal Romano, tercera edición típica para uso en las Misas celebradas en español. Desde el primer Domingo de Agosto vamos a usar solo este Misal para la celebración de la Misa en San Pio V.
En las parroquias de EE. UU. se ha utilizado variedad de ediciones del misal, debido a que muchos de los sacerdotes que ofician en las misas en español han provenido de varios países de Latinoamérica e inclusive de España y trajeron los libros litúrgicos de su país de origen. El misal de México es el que hemos visto más en uso en esta arquidiócesis. Puesto que en este país es común que las parroquias celebran la Misa en inglés y español, el nuevo Misal Romano utiliza el formato de la ya conocida versión en inglés para facilitar la celebración.
El uso de “ustedes” para remplazar al “vosotros”, lo encontrarán en los textos de los saludos, la introducción en el prefacio y en la plegaria eucarística, entre otros lugares. Hay cambios a muchos de los textos: las oraciones del sacerdote, como las oraciones colectas y en los prefacios mismos. Aunque tienen el mismo sentido, se han adaptado para estar más apegadas a las pautas de traducción implementadas en el documento Liturgiam Autenticam. También lo notarán un poco en los textos de la plegaria eucarística y en el resto del misal, pero no serán cambios drásticos.
Algunos de ustedes recordarán que en el Misal Romano en inglés hubo varios cambios en el Ordinario de la Misa en las partes del pueblo, pero en el nuevo misal en español, sólo hay un cambio a lo que responde la gente en la tercera forma del misterio de fe. Ahora será “Salvador del mundo, sálvanos, tú que nos has liberado por tu muerte y resurrección”. Acostumbrábamos a cantar o decir “Por tu cruz y resurrección nos has salvado, Señor”.
Algo que se notará es que el Misal Romano tendrá muchas más opciones para utilizar el canto, tanto para el ministro, como para el pueblo. Contiene diversos formularios melódicos y opciones para las respuestas del pueblo, así como para el canto del sacerdote y las partes cantadas del diácono, que se encuentran en el Ordinario de la Misa.
Para cantar es para celebrar la Misa en toda su plenitud. Los domingos, vamos a tratar de cantar en cada oportunidad. Vamos a cantar todas las aclamaciones: La aclamación antes del Evangelio, la aclamación después de la consagración, el gran “Amen” al final de la plegaria eucarística. Ya cantamos el Padre Nuestro en una de nuestras misas. Quizás podemos cantarlo en todas las misas.
Con la ayuda de Connie y Jose Pedro yo voy a tratar de utilizar el canto mas para las oraciones del sacerdote. Por favor, apóyenme con sus voces en respuesta.
Continuemos ofrecer el sacrificio de Cristo en la Misa con todo nuestro corazón, con toda nuestra mente, con toda nuestra alma, y con voces que sean elevadas en alabanza. P. Joe
