Hello everyone, As I talked about at my first Masses last weekend, I will be starting a Mass here with prayers for healing on the first Friday of each month. I have been offering this healing

Mass each month for the past thirty years. Many people have told me of the healing benefits (spiritual, emotional, and health) they have experienced. By way of credentials, I have been asked personally by Fr. Rookey and Fr. Kelleher to substitute for them on occasions when they unable to celebrate a Mass that they had scheduled. I considered it a great honor. I hope to see you at my first healing Mass here on Friday, July 7, at 7:30 p.m. Sincerely yours in Christ, Fr. Steve Bondi

THE RICHNESS OF LIFE IN CHRIST: Today we have the beautiful story of the woman promised a child, the wonderful exhortation about life in Christ, and a powerful instruction from Jesus. An embarrassment of riches? Not if we take Jesus' words about "welcome" to heart. The many challenges and blessings offered to us today by Elisha, Paul, and Jesus should be cause for rejoicing, and welcomed heartily into our lives. And, like the great treat that they are, they should be enjoyed and shared generously with others. Today's reading from Romans was chosen very early in the liturgical life of the Church to be the sole apostolic instruction received by candidates for baptism at the Easter Vigil. This illustrates its importance as a core belief, and as a means of comprehending the story of the Resurrection. Christ's resurrection is not merely a story about something that he underwent once upon a time, but it is our story, the story of how we joined the other members of the one Body of Christ, the church. We were not only dead, but we were buried; not ultimately buried, but raised to eternal life with Christ. Copyright © J. S. Paluch Co.

It is good to assess regularly what is at the center of our lives, because all kinds of things can inadvertently be there. For example, work, health, spouse, children, parents, internet, Smartphone, ambition, money, exercise, sports, friends. When any one of these becomes all-consuming, it distracts us from legitimate responsibilities and healthy relationships. In extremes, any one of these can push Jesus and Gospel living to the periphery of our lives. Our relationship with Jesus is to be

the most important one in our lives. All other relationships are to arise from our relationship with him. Because of our relationship with him, we will choose to lose our life for him and for one another just as he gave his life for us. And our reward will be the gift of new and fuller Life. We will receive what we have given—the very Life of Jesus himself. To keep Jesus as the center of our life, we must lose our life for Him and others. Losing our life means, for example, giving precious time so one who is overburdened might have some rest; reaching out in friendship to someone who annoys us; changing aspects of our lifestyle when someone confronts us about a self-centered habit. Every time we lose our life for Jesus and others, we grow deeper into life and relationships. We strengthen our relationship with Jesus—the center of our lives.

This week we will be celebrating our country’s independence that was won

for us some 241 years ago. This act of rebellion against the British gave us the freedoms we enjoy today—freedom to be anything we want to be and the freedom to express ourselves in almost any way. With this in mind, I was thinking about an even greater independence that we should celebrate every day—the freedom that Christ gave us nearly 2,000 years ago to live in the presence of God as His children forever united with Him through the sacrifice of His son. Our country was founded on the principle that all are created equal and that all deserve to live with dignity. The motto of our country is E Pluribus Unum (out of many, one). As Catholics, this is one of the basic tenets of our faith—that Christ died in order to bring us all together as one. When we come together to worship in our parish, we are united with everyone around the world who shares our belief in the Eucharist as the body, blood, soul, and divinity of Christ. True freedom is to live as God intended, in harmony with others and with His creation. We have this freedom in the faith we profess. Happy 4th of July!

Those who deny freedom to others deserve it not for themselves and under a just God

cannot long retain it. (Abraham Lincoln)

It’s Independence Day week, and there is a link worth tracing between the Declaration of Independence and the language of liturgy. One of the signers of the Declaration on that July 4 long ago was Charles Carroll, probably the wealthiest man in the colonies and one of the few Catholics on the political scene. As a flourish to his signature, he sought to distinguish himself from other prominent citizens bearing the same name by penning “Charles Carroll of Carrolltown”—a defiant “come and get me if you dare” postscript aimed at the British. Carroll’s brother John was a priest and patriot who in 1789 was given the task of organizing the Catholic Church in this country. By 1791 he had assembled a synod, or assembly of delegates, to launch that task formally. Archbishop Carroll wanted to gain acceptance of our faith by American people who mistrusted our customs and could not comprehend our liturgy. He made the amazing proposal to Rome that our liturgy should be prayed not in Latin, but in the vernacular, English. His wish was denied, but one hundred sixty years later, his deep desire helped the American bishops and scholars at the Second Vatican Council to win the vote in favor of the vernacular not just for the United States, but for the Church throughout the world.

What questions do you have about the Catholic faith? Please send your questions to Carol Schubert by calling 630-628-0900 x104 or e-mail [email protected]. What is unique about the People of God? The founder of this people is God the Father . Its leader is Jesus Christ. Its source of strength is the Holy Spirit. The entryway to the People of God is Baptism. Its dignity is the freedom of the children

of God. Its law is love. If this people remains faithful to God and seeks first the kingdom of God, it changes the world. [781-786] In the midst of all the peoples on earth, there is one people that is like no other. It is subject to no one but God alone. It is supposed to be like salt, which adds flavor; like yeast, which permeates everything; like light, which drives away the darkness. Anyone who belongs to the People of God must count on coming into conflict with people who deny God’s existence and disregard his commandments. In the freedom of the children of God, however, we have nothing to fear, not even death. What does it mean to say that the Church is the “Body of Christ?” Above all through the Sacraments of Baptism and Holy Eucharist, an inseparable union comes about between Jesus Christ and Christians. The union is so strong that it joins him and us like the head and members of a human body and makes us one. [787-795]
