LITURGY CORNER Hail Mary, full of grace… Today’s gospel on this Sunday before Christmas is Luke’s account of the angel Gabriel’s appearance to Mary. God begins the “Christ event” with Mary, a simple Galilean Jewish girl who is at the very bottom of the social ladder of her time; the God who created all things makes the fulllment of his promise dependent upon one of the most dispossessed and powerless of his creatures. Yet God exalts her humility, her simplicity, her trust in his love and mercy; in Mary, God reveals his “favor’ for the poor, the rejected, the abandoned, and the forgotten among us today. Mary’s yes to Gabriel’s’ words set the stage for the greatest event in human history: the birth of our Savior, Jesus. TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITION

Children of the parish are somewhat focused on Santa Claus these days, who is keeping an eye on who's naughty and who's nice. Santa Claus, with his heavenly patron Saint Nicholas, has been more or less in charge of gift-giving to American children for a hundred years or so. In other places, perhaps more attentive to our Christian tradition, there are different gift-bearers.

In Greece, Saint Basil delivers the presents on his feast day, December 31, and makes sure everyone is sprinkled with holy water. The Baby Jesus is in charge elsewhere, called the Christ-kind in Austria and Belgium, El Niño Jesús in Columbia, and Le Petit Jesus in France, where he shares his duties with Père Noël. In the Czech Republic almost everyone is atheist, but the infant Jesus, brings gifts to one and all. In Poland the "Star Man" is said to bring the gifts, although often he turns out to be the village priest in disguise. Saint Nicholas, not his Americanized cousin, is the giver in Holland, where he wears a bishop's miter, and in Russia, where he wears a bishop's crown. Soviet Russia tried to dethrone Saint Nicholas and promote Grandfather Frost, but no one was much fooled by this attempt to squeeze religion out of Christ's birth. One country has a saintly woman in charge of the gifts, Saint Lucy, honored in Sweden on December 13, when children serve their parents breakfast in bed, and others awake to news that they have been nominated for a Nobel Prize. Some children have a second round of gifts on Epiphany, when the magi assume the gift-giving duties. In general, the gifts of Christmas are simple pleasures, not great heaps of treasures. Once upon a time, a new pair of socks or an orange was enough for us. No matter what gifts we receive, all of them are to point us to the true gift, and the true giver.

Your immense generosity in donating to our Giving Tree at St. Philip Neri is very much appreciated. We have col-

lected over $4,000 worth of grocery gift cards to be divided between St. Leo the Great in Sonoma and St. Anthony de Padua in Willits. Your kind-ness goes a long way in helping those in need especially this holiday season. Thank you.

How difficult in this year, when the fourth Sunday of Advent falls only one day before Christ‐mas Eve, to maintain any sense of waiting for the Feast of the Incarnation. It is appropriate that the readings for this Sunday are so pregnant with hope and anticipation; they mirror and magnify the excitement that comes with true waiting, knowing we are on the cusp of experiencing God's unlim‐ited love made manifest to us once again. The birth images in these readings are unmistakable and create a sense of imminent labor. The authentic life begins with the simple desire to be who God created us to be and cooper‐ate with God by playing the part he has designed for us in human history. The adventure of salvation begins when we stop asking, “What’s in it for me?” and turn humbly to God in our hearts and ask, “How may I serve? What work do you wish for me to do with my life? What is your will for my life?” Every generation turns its back on God in its own way. Our modern era has revolted violently against the idea of “God’s will.” Desperate to maintain the illusion of being in control of their lives, many modern Christians have either turned their backs on God or created a new spiritual rhetoric that allows them to determine selectively God’s will for their lives. And, yet, it is the very surrender‐ing of our own will to God’s designs that characterizes the whole Christian struggle. The spiritual life is primarily concerned with this single dynamic of turning our individual will over to God. God doesn’t call you to live an authentic life in order to stifle or control you. He invites you to live an authentic life so that, from an infinite number of possibilities, you can become the best ver‐sion of yourself. By calling you to live an authentic life, God is saying, “Be all I create you to be.”
