O U R M I S S I O N
We of St. Peter’s Parish are a faith community who have as our
model our Lord Jesus Christ and the fulfillment of his mission. We
profess who we are by our shared belief and understanding of the
Gospel. As people called to conversion, we come together to
celebrate and bear witness to God’s redemptive activity in our
Lives. We live out this mission of Christ through prayer and
worship and through our baptismal call, which challenges us to
minister to and with others.

THE CATHOLIC STEWARD
Acts 2: 1-11; Ps 104: 1, 24, 29-31, 34; 1 Cor 12: 3B-7, 12-13; Jn: 20: 19-23
T oday is the Solemnity of Pentecost. One of the most
ancient feasts of the Church, Pentecost is mentioned
and explained in both the Acts of the Apostles (today’s
First Reading) and in St. Paul’s First Letter to the
Corinthians. The name comes quite simply from the Greek
word, Pentekoste, which meant “ the 50th day” as Pentecost is 50
days after Easter Sunday (counting Easter).
Pentecost is often called the “birthday of the Church” as it was on
this day — with the descent of the Holy Spirit upon the Apostles
and about 120 followers of Christ, including our Blessed Mother
Mary and other men and women — that Christ’s mission on earth
is completed.
However, that mission continues with us. We, too, have received
the power of the Holy Spirit through Baptism, Confirmation, the
Eucharist, and other sacraments. It is this Holy Spirit that allows
us to be the Lord’s Disciples actively working in today’s Church
and today’s society. Nevertheless, we must accept and recognize
that fact.
In a homily given on Pentecost Sunday 20 years ago Pope St. John
Paul II said, “In the Acts of the Apostles, St. Luke describes the
extraordinary manifestation of the Holy Spirit. This divine gift is
light and power, light to proclaim the Gospel truth and power to
infuse each of us with the courage of witnessing to the faith.”
Living out this call is the essence of stewardship.

Second Collection This Weekend — May 14-15
Peter’s Pence
In the second collection today, we are supporting Pope Francis
in his charitable works. The Peter’s Pence Collection is taken up
worldwide to support our brothers and sisters on the margins of
society, including victims of war, oppression, and natural disas-
ters. In this Jubilee Year of Mercy, the collection is an oppor-
tunity to join with Pope Francis and be a witness of charity to
our suffering brothers and sisters. Please be generous in today’s
collection.
Endowment Income At Work
St. Peter’s school endowment is officially called St. Peter’s Endowment Trust Fund for Catholic Education.
Income earned by this fund must be used in support of Catholic Education at St. Peter’s. Last year we used
distributions from this endowment (from 2014 and 2015) to pay for the construction of the new Spanish room in
the basement of the McKay Center. Donations made to this endowment throughout the years, and earnings on the
fund make a difference every year, as we use income from the fund for school needs. For more information about
our Endowment Trust Fund for Catholic Education, contact Karen Conley in the parish office.

SEQUENCE
Veni, Sancte Spiritus
Come, Holy Spirit, come!
And from your celestial home
Shed a ray of light divine!
Come, Father of the poor!
Come, source of all our store!
Come, within our bosoms shine.
You, of comforters the best;
You, the soul’s most welcome guest;
Sweet refreshment here below;
In our labor, rest most sweet;
Grateful coolness in the heat;
Solace in the midst of woe.
O most blessed Light divine,
Shine within these hearts of yours,
And our inmost being fill!
Where you are not, we have naught,
Nothing good in deed or thought,
Nothing free from taint of ill.
Heal our wounds, our strength renew;
On our dryness pour your dew;
Wash the stains of guilt away:
Bend the stubborn heart and will;
Melt the frozen, warm the chill;
Guide the steps that go astray.
On the faithful, who adore
And confess you, evermore
In your sevenfold gift descend;
Give them virtue’s sure reward;
Give them your salvation, Lord;
Give them joys that never end.
Amen.
Alleluia.

St. Peter’s parishioners,
We, two junior girls who attend St. Teresa’s Academy, did an experiment for three days to
help better understand how those who are less fortunate live on a daily basis. The majority
of the world lives on less than $2.00 a day for food. This fact made our jaws drop, and we
finally agreed we need to step into their shoes, and see how it feels. We went shopping at
Aldi’s with only $12.00 to spend. We ended up getting mostly canned fruits and veggies.
We started each morning with a plate of scrambled eggs. By the end of the three days, eggs
did not seem appetizing to us at all. We realized how much the lifestyle changes when you
are living off of $2 a day. Our mentality has drastically changed when it comes to taking for
granted how much food we waste each day. Here is a link to an organization we chose that
would greatly appreciate your donations. This organization helps those who live in those
conditions everyday. Thank you for considering. http://livingonone.org/livingonone/
