3 St. Peter's Good News Lutheran Church Newsletter Plainfield Township, Pennsylvania (610) 863-6859 May 2018 This month we celebrate the Ascension of Jesus and the festival of Pentecost. I love the story of Jesusascension as it is told in the book of Acts. The disciples had the chance to spend 40 days with Jesus after he rose from the dead and yet it seems like they still dont get it. They are asking him if this is the time that he will restore the kingdom to Israel and Jesus tells them that it is not for them to know such things, but that they will be given power from the Holy Spirit to go out into the world to be his witnesses to all the ends of the earth. And then Jesus rises up into the clouds and he is gone. And as the disciples stand there looking upward, kind of with their mouths hanging open, two angels stand before them and ask them, basically, what they are doing just standing around looking up. Ten days later, the disciples are in the upper room when the Holy Spirit descends on them and they start speaking in different languages and proclaim that Jesus is the Messiah so that everyone in Jerusalem hears the message in their own native tongue. Some days I think we are like the disciples at Jesusascension, standing around and looking up, waiting for something to happen, waiting for God to reveal his power. The truth is, we are on the other side of Pentecost. We have been given the gift of the Holy Spirit so that we can go out into the world and proclaim the wonder of Jesusresurrection to the ends of the earth, but sometimes we dont even get as far as the end of the block. We have been given a gift of incredible power, the Holy Spirit, which enables us to do far more than we think possible in reaching out to others to share the Good News. Like the disciples, we need to stop looking up and act on Jesus commission to go into all the world. Thats the power of the Holy Spirit, acting through us, in this Pentecost season and beyond. Plainfield Township, Pennsylvania (610) 863-6859 May 2018

This month we celebrate the Ascension of Jesus and the festival

of Pentecost. I love the story of Jesus’ ascension as it is told in

the book of Acts. The disciples had the chance to spend 40 days

with Jesus after he rose from the dead and yet it seems like they

still don’t get it. They are asking him if this is the time that he will

restore the kingdom to Israel and Jesus tells them that it is not for

them to know such things, but that they will be given power from the Holy Spirit to go

out into the world to be his witnesses to all the ends of the earth.

And then Jesus rises up into the clouds and he is gone. And as the disciples

stand there looking upward, kind of with their mouths hanging open, two angels

stand before them and ask them, basically, what they are doing just standing around

looking up. Ten days later, the disciples are in the upper room when the Holy Spirit

descends on them and they start speaking in different languages and proclaim that

Jesus is the Messiah so that everyone in Jerusalem hears the message in their own

native tongue.

Some days I think we are like the disciples at Jesus’ ascension, standing

around and looking up, waiting for something to happen, waiting for God to reveal

his power. The truth is, we are on the other side of Pentecost. We have been given

the gift of the Holy Spirit so that we can go out into the world and proclaim

the wonder of Jesus’ resurrection to the ends of the earth, but sometimes we don’t

even get as far as the end of the block.

We have been given a gift of incredible power, the Holy Spirit, which enables

us to do far more than we think possible in reaching out to others to share the Good

News. Like the disciples, we need to stop looking up and act on Jesus’ commission

to go into all the world. That’s the power of the Holy Spirit, acting through us, in this

Pentecost season and beyond.

Dear St. Peter’s Family:

A special “thank you” to Pastor

Chris for all his visits to me during

my hospitalization. I am recovering at home

now. Also, “thank you” for all the get well cards.

They were greatly appreciated.

Thanks again.

Lewis C. Ponnett, Jr.

Dear Church Family:

We want to give a special thank you to Fran

Eckert for giving the flowers for Stan on Easter

Sunday.

Also thank you for all the prayers and well wishes

for Stan’s full recovery from this cancer.

Sincerely,

Alvera Lilly

Dear St. Peter’s:

I would like to thank the St. Peter’s family for all

the prayers, cards, text messages and calls.

They were so nice to receive them at a time like

this.

Also, the visits from Pastor Chris and the

prayers we had together. This helped so much

for my recovery.

I want to thank everyone for the help through

this operation.

Sincerely,

Vern Walker

St. Peter’s Family:

Dear St. Peter’s Lutheran Church:

Thank you so much for your hat ministry

through Lehigh Valley Hospital. We were fortu-

nate enough to receive one when our daughter

was born, and we were touched by the love and

generosity of the ministry. As the pastor of a

local church, we appreciate your service.

In God’s Love,

Ricky, Kim and Ella Brown

Dear St. Peter’s Church:

I am a cancer patient at Lehigh Valley

Muhlenburg. I recently became the owner of a

beautiful triangular shaped scarf in shades of

blue, orange, purple and yellow. I also acquired

two beautiful hats for which I have received

several compliments. Each hat has a bit of the

hat gathered at the side. One hat is turquoise

blue and the other is white, blue and orange.

These garments had a tag that stated

“Blessings from St. Peter’s Lutheran Church”.

Thank you so much to your church members

who took the time make this beautiful scarf and

hats and delivered them to the hospital.

I wanted you to know your caring and kindness

is appreciated.

My hair is nearly gone, and I was looking for a

hat style that was cute and comfortable. The

hats from your church are exactly what I was

looking for.

The scarf goes well with so many colors. I wore

it to my church and several members have

complimented it. I made sure to tell them where

I got it from.

Thank you again.

Sincerely,

Wendy J. Keim

What is the Special Memorial Day Service at St. Peter’s?

The Special Memorial Day Service at St. Peter’s is a way for the congregation to recognize and pay tribute to the service men and women that have passed and pray for those that continue to fight for our freedom. The service is 15 minutes long. We gather around the Memorial stone by the flag pole, the Praise Band leads us in a hymn and provides special music as St. Peter’s Veterans ready passages or poems. The Roseto VFW Bugle Corp will play taps in the distance as veterans place American flags around the stone to symbolize the following wars: American Revolutionary, War of 1812, Mexican-American, Civil War, Spanish American, WWI, WWII, Korean, Vietnam, Desert Storm, Enduring Freedom (Afghanistan), Iraqi. A 21 gun salute will conclude our service. On May 27th, please plan on joining us in paying tribute and praying for the St. Peter’s veterans who have served and who are currently serving to keep us all safe. If you’d like to participate by sharing a story or reading a passage, please contact Amy Rotzell at 610.365.8474. All veterans are encouraged to contact the Church office to be sure your name is listed in the bulletin. During the last hymn of the 8am service, the congregation will process out and gather around the stone. If you regularly attend the 10:15am service, please plan on gathering around the stone at 8:45am. When: Sunday, May 27 Time: 9:00AM Location: Memorial Stone by flag pole

A Poem for Memorial Day

Lord, let me not in service lag,

Let me be worthy of our flag.

Let me remember, when I’m tried,

The sons heroic who have died

In freedom’s name, and in my way

Teach me to be as brave as they.

In all I am, in all I do,

Unto our flag, I would be true;

For God and country let me stand.

Unstained of soul and clean of hand,

Teach me to serve and guard and love

The Starry Flag which flies above.
