ST. PETER’S BOOK CLUB Everyone absolutely loved The Salt Path - such a beautiful, uplifting story. Well worth a read. This month, we are reading Villa Triste by Lucretia Grindle which is set in Florence during the Second World War but is also inter-woven with a thriller set in the modern day and The Hunting Party by Lucy Foley which is a page-turning novel of psychological sus-pense in the tradition of Agatha Christie. Our next meeting will be at 7.30pm on the 18th February in the Member’s Lounge. Please do join us even if you are not able to read the books. WALKING GROUP– The next walk will be on 16th February. Meet at 10.00 am at the Car Park at Torkington Park nearest the Rising Sun. Circular with only small inclines!!! FOOTSTEPS EVENT ON TUESDAY 25 FEBRUARY The next event in the Footsteps series of presentations is on Tuesday 25 February at 8pm in our parish centre. Mary Hardiman will be sharing another very moving journey of faith to help us on our own same journey. Come and hear about her friend Jeremiah who is currently on Death Row, Louisiana as he realises “Ain’t no man put them damn clouds in the sky”. Footsteps is a relaxed, ifor-mal evening with plenty refreshments in a café-style setting. All are welcome.

To prepare for this prayer, spend a few moments asking the Holy Spirit to open your mind and heart to hear this Word being spoke to you today Fifth Sunday in Ordinary Time (Year A) Matthew 5:13-16 Jesus said to his disciples: ‘You are the salt of the earth. But if salt becomes tasteless, what can make it salty again? It is good for noth-ing, and can only be thrown out to be trampled underfoot by men. ‘You are the light of the world. A city built on a hill-top cannot be hidden. No one lights a lamp to put it under a tub; they put it on the lamp-stand where it shines for everyone in the house. In the same way your light must shine in the sight of men, so that, seeing your good works, they may give the praise to your Father in heaven.’ Copyrght…1966, 1967 & 1968 by Dart6on, Longman & Todd, & Doubleday & Co. Inc. and used by permission.

1. Spend some time quietly reading and rereading the passage.

2. Note the words/phrases that draw your attention

3. Jesus said to his disciples…Jesus is saying to you today: You are salt… Salt preserves, gives taste to,heals…In

which situation might you be being asked to preserve Gospel values? 4 Spend time in quiet prayer with Jesus about the challenges of being one of his disciples.

For Conversation: New ways in which your parish community can let its light shine in the neighbourhood.

ST PETER’S AND ST. PHILIP’S REFUGEE SPONSORSHIP PROGRAME We are delighted to inform parishioners that we have raised over £10,100 so far!! Thank you so much for your kind generosity. FAMILY RACE NIGHT - 21st February - all proceeds going to the Refugee Sponsorship fund Doors open at 7pm and the first race will be at 7.30pm. £2 entry fee - children free. The bar will be open and there will be food, sweets and refreshments on sale. Please support this worthy cause and bring your friends - the more the merrier! For catering purposes, if you could let Sandra Coleing know numbers, it would be much appreciated - email [email protected] BANK DETAILS - If you would still like to make a bank transfer, the Account Number is 59655360 and Sort Code 30-15-52. GIFT AID - if you know that you have given a one off donation, we now have the Gift Aid forms at the back of church. Simply fill one in and bring it back to church in an envelope labelled Parish Refugee Group and we will apply for the gift aid on your donation. Project update - Meredith, a representative of RESET the government appointed charity who will be supporting us through the application process, attended our meeting on Tuesday 28th January. She was able to talk us through specifics in the application form and so each group are now able to start writing their own little bits. We will soon be seeking consent from Stockport Local Authority and sending our application off to the Home Office - we will be looking for approval in principle as we aim to rent the accommodation as late as possible, so we can avoid paying unnecessary rents. One area that has prompted quite a lot of discussion is the ESOL (English for Speakers of Other Languages) provision - we need to ensure that each adult (mum and dad) have 8 hours a week ESOL tuition for a full year. If anyone knows of any courses run locally or ESOL accredited private tutors, that would be a real help. Volunteer helpers - As we are now starting to consider providing a support network for our family both before and after they ar-rive, we will be looking for lots of people who will be available to help with decorating, DIY, helping to furnish the home, picking the family up to take them to the doctors or dentists, help them to navigate public transport, go to the supermarket and withdraw money from the bank etc… Anyone who will come into regular contact with the family will need to be DBS checked. If you think you may be able to help, please contact Carmel O’Malley on 0161 483 8296 and she will register your interest. This will be a really important part of the project as we aim to make our family feel as welcome as possible as well as make their transition to a new a home and culture as smooth as we can.
