Coronation of the Blessed Virgin Mary, beginning on Friday, Au-

with a procession led by our Priest Father Joseph Levine at 6:00

pm, everyone is welcome.

Two Saints to invoke against contagion

St. Roch (died 1327AD) ministered to victims of an epidemic, was responsible for miraculous cures, contracted the disease himself, withdrew to the woods were he was himself miracu-lously healed. He has since been invoked in favor of victims of the plague and other epidemics.

St. Rosalie (died 1166AD) lived as a hermitess and died alone in her cave on Mt. Pelligrino outside Palermo, Sicily. In 1624, when a plague threatened the city she appeared to a hunter, revealed to him the location of her bones and ordered they be carried in procession. After her bones were carried three times around the city the plague ceased. She is the patron saint of Palermo.

rather than protest.

If you are sick do not come; if you are afraid or nervous

seat you. We will still need our sanitizing crews, and we

have been really shorthanded after the 5:30pm Mass

on Saturday. Please avoid use of bathrooms as much as

Eventos de 15 –23 de agosto EVENTS OF August 15th—23rd

Registration for Religious Ed & Sacramental Prep: Because of COVID 19 this year will look quite a bit different in the teaching of Religious Education and Sacramental Prep. We will be moving to a Homeschool Model where you, as parents, will be teaching your child the faith and preparing them for the reception of the Sacraments. We as the church will be here to support and guide you, as parents, on how to do that success-fully. The first thing that you will need to do is to register your child or children for Religious Education so that we know of your intent to have your child receive a sacrament or the intent to continue teaching your child the faith leading up to the sacra-ment of Confirmation or even continuing education past Confir-mation (yes, we should continue to learn about our faith past Confirmation). Registration is scheduled for Monday, September 14th; Wednesday, September 16th; Monday, September 21st and Wednesday, September 23rd. Everyone should register wheth-er this is your first year or your second year in the program. We will have more information to follow about times and location. We will schedule parent meetings once we know how many children we have registered and how many meetings we need to schedule to be able to maintain social distancing protocols. These meetings will be mandatory as we will be explaining how the new program will work and what the expectation will be for you as parents.

Lo primero que tendrá que hacer es registrar a su hijo o hijos en Educación Religiosa para que sepamos su intención de que su hijo reciba un sacramento o la intención de continuar enseñán-dole la fe que conduce al sacramento de la Confirmación. o in-cluso educación continua después de la Confirmación (sí, debe-mos continuar aprendiendo sobre nuestra fe después de la Con-firmación). La inscripción está programada para el lunes 14 de septiembre; Miércoles 16 de septiembre; Lunes 21 de septiembre y miércoles 23 de septiembre. Todos deben registrarse ya sea que este sea su primer año o su segundo año en el programa. Tendremos más información a seguir sobre horarios y ubicación. Programaremos reuniones de padres una vez que sepamos cuán-tos niños hemos registrado y cuántas reuniones debemos pro-gramar para poder mantener los protocolos de distanciamiento social. From the Pastor’s Desk – Fr. Levine- Last Sunday I commented that privilege of birth (and lack thereof) involves an extraordinary coincidence of countless accidents; each one of us, individually and impersonally, from the perspective of all created causality, is most improbable. For the atheist this thought is intolerable evidence of the utter meaningless of human life, for the believer it is like a kiss of divine love. The perspective of divine providence, however, introduces a new perspective on privilege, together with one great equalizer. The worldly perspective of privilege prioritizes such things as economic and social standing. Since the goal of divine providence is not a person’s temporal well-being, but eternal salvation, those are most truly privileged by birth who enter the world in circumstances that most equip them to recognize and respond to the good-ness of God, revealed above all in the salvific work of Jesus Christ. The most basic ‘privilege’, one that shouldn’t even really be a privilege, but appears today to be becoming more and more of a privilege, is that of being born of married parents who love one another. There is no greater natural gift that a child can have upon his entrance in the world and in the years of his youth. One woman, one of seventeen children, put it this way, “The permanence of their marriage, our happy child-hoods, and our eternal happiness were their main concerns. We knew and we felt it like a warm blanket or, at times, a hair shirt, or like the ground under our feet.” “The ground under our feet”: the parent’s marriage is the bedrock of a child’s whole existence. In the meas-ure that the parent’s marriage is solid, the child receives a fundamental psychological stability that makes it easier for him to see things the way they are and to live in the real world with a vision of goodness and hope. The child receives a capacity to trust and from the capacity for trust comes a capacity to love. Contrariwise, we see how easily the failures of parents, within marriage or without, leave their children deep-ly wounded, especially in their capacity to trust and to love; their lives easily become marked by fear and sus-picion. Well, someone who is capable of trust and love is more capable of recognizing the goodness of God than someone who is inherently fearful and suspicious. When it comes to the relationship to God, however, the greatest privilege of birth (or shortly thereafter) is baptism into the Catholic Church and instruction in the Catholic faith. St. Thomas Aquinas speaking of the need for divine revelation affirms that it was necessary for God to make known to us certain truths that exceed the capacity of human reason (i.e. we could never, under any circum-stance, figure them out for ourselves) precisely because he has destined us for the supernatural blessedness of eternal life, a goal that exceeds our natural capacity. Yet, even as far as those truths about God that human reason is capable of attaining, St. Thomas notes could “only be known by a few, and that after a long time, and with the admixture of many errors.” (ST Q1a1) The Catholic Church provides the faithful with all the truth that God wants us to know about himself and his plan of salvation, together with the fulness of the means necessary to attain salvation. The greatest of privileges a child can receive is to be raised in the Catholic faith. It is a great privilege, but we must remember, with privilege comes responsibility. “Noblesse oblige”: the royal status of the children of God carries with it the royal responsibilities of the children of God. The Catholic faith is not a treasure to be hoarded, but an amazing gift that should be shared with as many as possible. There is, however, a great equalizer, the grace of God, given to whom he wills, when he wills, in the measure he wills. There are many who have the privilege of being born into a fine Catholic family, but never seem to amount to much in terms of the life of grace, whether because of their own failure to respond, or because the mysteries of the dispensation of God’s grace we do not know. On the other hand, God’s grace has the power to touch and transform the lives of persons who enter the world in the most desperate of circumstances or who during the course of their life suffered the most horrific misfortunes. All other privileges are as nothing in comparison to the privilege of God’s grace. St. Paul, who excelled in terms of the privileges of the Old Covenant, declared, I consider everything as loss because of the supreme good of knowing Christ Jesus my Lord. Desde el Escritorio del párroco El Padre José – El domingo pasado comenté que el privilegio de nacimiento (y la falta del mismo) implica una extraordinaria coincidencia de innumerables accidentes; cada uno de nosotros, individual e impersonalmente, desde la perspectiva de toda causali-dad creada, es muy improbable. Para el ateo, este pensamiento es una prueba intolerable de la absoluta falta de sentido de la vida humana, para el creyente es como un beso de amor divino. La perspectiva de la providencia divina, sin embargo, introduce una nueva perspectiva sobre el privilegio, junto con un gran igualador. La perspectiva mundana del privilegio da prioridad a cosas como la posición económica y social. Dado que la meta de la providencia divina no es el bienestar temporal de una persona, sino la salvación eterna, aquellos que son verdaderamente privilegiados por nacimiento, ingresan al mundo en circunstancias que los capacitan para reconocer y responder a la bon-dad de Dios, revelada sobre todo en la obra salvífica de Jesucristo. El 'privilegio' más básico, uno que ni siquiera debería ser realmente un privilegio, pero que hoy parece ser cada vez más un privilegio, es el de nacer de padres casados que se aman. No hay mayor regalo natural que pueda tener un niño al entrar al mundo y en los años de su juventud. Una mujer, una de diecisiete hijos, lo expresó de esta manera: “La permanencia de su matrimonio, nuestra infancia feliz y nuestra felicidad eterna eran sus principales preocupaciones. Lo sabíamos y lo sentimos como una manta cálida o, a veces, una camisa de pelo, o como el suelo bajo nuestros pies ”. “El suelo bajo nuestros pies”: el matrimonio de los padres es la base de toda la existencia de un niño. En la medida en que el matrimonio de los padres es sólido, el niño recibe una estabilidad psicológica fundamental que le facilita ver las cosas como son y vivir en el mundo real con una visión de bondad y esperanza. El niño recibe la capacidad de confiar y de la ca-pacidad de confiar surge la capacidad de amar. Por el contrario, vemos con qué facilidad los fracasos de los padres, dentro o fuera del matrimonio, dejan a sus hijos pro-fundamente heridos, especialmente en su capacidad de confiar y amar; sus vidas se ven fácilmente marcadas por el miedo y la sospecha. Bueno, alguien que es capaz de confiar y amar es más capaz de reconocer la bondad de Dios que alguien que es intrínsecamente temeroso y desconfiado. Sin embargo, cuando se trata de la relación con Dios, el mayor privilegio de nacimiento (o poco después) es el bautismo en la Iglesia Católica y la instrucción en la fe católica. El mayor de los privilegios que puede recibir un niño es ser criado en la fe católica. Es un gran privilegio, pero debemos recordar que con el privilegio viene la responsabilidad. “Noblesse oblige”: el estatus real de los hijos de Dios conlleva las responsabilidades reales de los hijos de Dios. La fe católica no es un tesoro para acumular, sino un regalo asombroso que debe compartirse con tantos como sea posi-ble. Sin embargo, hay un gran igualador, la gracia de Dios, dada a quien Él quiere, cuando quiere, en la medida que quiere. Hay muchos que tienen el privilegio de nacer en una excelente familia católica, pero nunca parecen ser llenados en térmi-nos de la vida de gracia, ya sea por su propia falta de respuesta o por los misterios de la dispensación de la gracia de Dios que no sabemos. Por otro lado, la gracia de Dios tiene el poder de tocar y transformar la vida de las personas que ingresan al mundo en las circunstancias más desesperadas o que durante el transcurso de su vida sufrieron las desgracias más horribles.
