SUMMARY
Site Name: St Peter’s Church
Location: Broughton Poggs, Oxfordshire
NGR: SP 4235 2038
Type: Programme of Archaeological Recording
Date: 19-25 October 2005
Location of Archive: To be deposited with Oxford Museum
Site Code: BPC 05
A programme of archaeological recording was undertaken by Cotswold Archaeology (CA)
during groundworks associated with the replacement and improvement of drainage at St
Peter’s Church, Broughton Poggs, Oxfordshire.
Small quantities of disarticulated human bone were disturbed, and were reinterred in the
course of the groundworks. Apart from these, no features or deposits of archaeological
interest were observed and no artefactual material pre-dating the modern period was
recovered.

1. INTRODUCTION
1.1 In October 2005 Cotswold Archaeology (CA) carried out a programme of
archaeological recording for Nimbus Conservation on behalf of Andrew Townsend
Architects at St Peter’s Church, Broughton Poggs, Oxfordshire (centred on NGR: SP
4235 2038; Fig. 1).
1.2 The programme of archaeological recording was undertaken to monitor any
disturbance of deposits associated with the graveyard of the church during the
improvement and replacement of drainage pipes. The objective of the programme of
archaeological recording was to record all archaeological remains exposed during
the development.
1.3 The archaeological fieldwork was carried out in accordance with a brief for
archaeological recording (Andrew Townsend Architects 2004). The fieldwork also
followed the Standard and Guidance for an Archaeological Watching Brief issued by
the Institute of Field Archaeologists (1999).
The site
1.4 The site is located within the churchyard of St Peter’s church, which lies immediately
to the south of Manor Farm and Manor Farm Cottage. It lies on level ground
bounded to the east and south by open pasture (Fig. 2).
1.5 The underlying geology of the area is mapped as Cornbrash of the Middle Jurrassic
era (Geological Survey 1998).
Archaeological background
1.6 The results of documentary, cartographic and aerial photographic research
undertaken by CA in November 2005 are summarised below. This research included
an SMR assessment and Record Office search on 29 July 2005 in accordance with
the brief (Andrew Townsend Architects 2004). All consulted sources, and the results
of the results of the SMR search are listed within the archive.

1.7 Although the SMR search identified a number of sites in the vicinity of the
development, none were noted within the site itself. The site lies immediately to the
south of Manor Farm, which includes a mid 17th century farmhouse (L/9687).
1.8 Archaeological interest in the site arises from its location within the churchyard of St
Peter’s church. The church has retained its Early Norman nave, chancel arch and
font along with other noteworthy architectural features, including a small Norman
window in the west wall, 13th century lancet windows and a priest’s door of the
same date (Pevsner and Sherwood 1974).
Methodology
1.7 An archaeologist was present during intrusive groundworks, comprising the hand
digging of drainage trenches to the north and south of the church. (Fig. 2).
1.8 Written, graphic and photographic records were compiled in accordance with CA
Technical Manual 1: Excavation Recording Manual (1996).
1.9 Subject to the agreement of the legal landowner the finds and site archive will be
deposited with Oxford Museum.
2. RESULTS
Trench 1 (Fig. 2)
2.1 Trench 1 was excavated to a maximum depth of 0.6m below the present ground
level (bpgl). This revealed deposit 101, a 0.45m deep graveyard deposit from which
some disarticulated human bone was recovered, and subsequently reinterred.
Deposit 101 was sealed by topsoil and turf layer 100. The natural Cornbrash
substrate was not observed in this trench.
Trench 2 (Fig. 2)
2.2 Trench 2 was excavated to a maximum depth of 0.6m below the present ground
level (bpgl).This revealed deposit 202, a 0.35m deep graveyard deposit. Deposit 202
was sealed by topsoil and turf layer 200 away from the current access path to the

church. Where the trench fell within the line of the path, deposit 202 was sealed by
layer 201, which comprised yellow gravel path material. The natural Cornbrash
substrate was not observed in this trench.
3. DISCUSSION
3.1 Despite the archaeological potential of the application area (see Section 1.6, above),
the programme of archaeological recording identified no significant archaeological
remains within the area of observed groundworks. This suggests that undisturbed
graves which could be assigned either to extant gravestones or known plots lie
beneath the level disturbed by these works.
4. CA PROJECT TEAM
4.1 Fieldwork was undertaken by Laurent Coleman and David Cudlip, who also
compiled this report. The illustrations were prepared by Liz Gardner. Documentary,
cartographic and aerial photograph research was carried out by Susan Diamond.
The archive has been compiled by David Cudlip, and prepared for deposition by Ed
McSloy. The project was managed for CA by Cliff Bateman.
