From the Pastor’s Desk

The Ascension we celebrate today, is a great feast, filled with hope and joy. Our Risen Lord is going to the Father and will send to us the Promised Advocate: The Holy Spirit. Jesus’s earthly journey is over. And now, he turns to us as His followers to give each of us a share in His Mis-sion. There is a lot to do. Jesus needs us, each of our talents, our time, and our treasures, to make His word arrive to the entire universe.

And, as you assume your mission, be sure also, that your efforts are not isolated, and you are not by yourself; you have on your side the powerful presence of the Holy Spirit. He will fill your life with all the gifts you need to be Jesus disciple.

What can you offer to Him today, to help Him to accom-plish His mission? Perhaps a prayer, your sorrows, or your hopes, or your dedication to serve your brothers and sisters, especially those in dire need, and do that with all your heart. Even, if you hear Him calling you to a specific vocation, please answer His call. In front of you could be a call to enter in to consecrated life, or to priesthood, or permanent deaconate; moreover, to re-new your commitment as a married person, and build a wonderful family. All your efforts are more than wel-come. Jesus will make sure that you will never regret it.

May this journey to Pentecost, whose Novena we start-ed this past Friday, will bring you the Gift, you need the most, to fulfill your mission.

May you have a Blessed weekend, a much more blessed summer filled with joy and the love of your loved ones.

Fr. Fabio

SUMMER RESIDENTS… ARE YOU A REGISTERED PARISHIONER?

Many times people have attended Mass regularly during the summer and don’t realize they can be a seasonal parishioner. When you register online, just add a note in the FAMILY REMARKS that you are a summer resident.

You can register by calling the parish office or register online at: stpeter-douglas.org

There is also information in the kiosk

Come join our Bible class on Tuesday after the morning mass in Room 4 in the Parish Center (next to the Christian Neighbors office). We go over what will be covered in the weekend Readings and Gospel along with reading those sections in the Bible.

Please pray for the repose of the soul of Jackie Doucette, who passed away this past week.

Eternal rest grant unto her, O Lord, and let perpetual light shine upon her.

May the souls of the faithful departed, through the mercy of God, rest in peace. Amen

LIVE THE LITURGY INSPIRATION FOR THE WEEK

Today, we are reminded that it is Jesus' suffering, death, resurrection, AND ascension all taken together that make the one event that brings salvation to humani-ty. Jesus' return to the Father completes the work Jesus came to accomplish and clearly shows us the for-giveness, mercy, and love the Father wishes to bestow upon his children. Faith allows us to savor the mystery of God's design and the hope that awaits us. Today, we are called to look up and see that Jesus ascended to the Father. His mission is completed, and ours is now beginning. Having "looked up," we now have to "look out" into our broken world and deliver the Good News. We now have a new perspective on life and can see things differently: life comes from death, hope from des-pair, faith from doubt, joy from sadness, and freedom to those who are held bound. It is amazing news indeed!

How do we spread the word?

WHY DO WE DO THAT? CATHOLIC LIFE EXPLAINED

Question: Couldn't Jesus have done more good if he stayed on earth, rather than ascended into heaven? Answer: This is an interesting question! During his earthly life, Jesus gave sight to the blind, healed paralytics, drove out demons, and fed thousands with only a few loaves of bread. Imagine what he could have done if he'd never ascended into heaven! Imagine what our world could be! It's an interesting thought to consider, especially as the world faces challenges that only seem to deepen and expand. Yet at the Last Supper, Jesus says, "It is better for you if I go." Why? His response must have seemed strange to the Apostles at the time. In his place, Jesus says, he will send the Paraclete, the Comforter, the Advocate. He promises to send the Holy Spirit.

Jesus' departure allows the Apostles to become the leaders he has formed them to be. Jesus is no longer situated in only one geographical location, and his Church will never be a political kingdom. Soon after the Ascension, we celebrate Pentecost - the descent of the Holy Spirit and the radical empowerment of the followers of Jesus. We share in that empowerment and in that mission. Jesus is present in the sacraments, and he is present in us. Through our faith, hope, and love, we are called to be the good he does here on earth!

P. Fabio
