SCRIPTURE INSIGHTS “Love God and love your neighbor” captures the essence of Jesus’ message. Today’s First Read-ing contains a passage known as the Shema Israel (“Hear, O Israel,” Deuteronomy 6:4), the central statement of belief of the Jewish people. A high point in the synagogue service still today is the recitation of these words. There is only one God, and God alone is Israel’s God. This belief calls forth a total dedication to God with “your heart, your soul, and your strength”-God must be loved with our entire being. A scribe (someone well trained in interpreting the Jewish Law) comes to Jesus in today’s Gospel with a question: “Which is the first of all the commandments?” This was a much discussed question in Israel at that time with two main schools of thought: Rabbi Sham-mai was very strict, while Rabbi Hillel was more pastoral and taught that the whole law is summed up in the words “What you hate for yourself, do not do to your neighbor.” Against this back-ground the scribe wishes to see where Jesus stands. Jesus quotes the words of the Shema Isra-el, but goes even farther by adding a second part: “You shall love your neighbor as yourself” (from Leviticus 19:19). By bringing together these two commandments, Jesus makes an important point. While he upholds the Old Testament, he also of-fers a clear way of interpreting the numerous laws-through the lens of love: love God and love your neighbor as yourself. Jesus offers us today a path to follow in life: love of God and love of neighbor should direct every action. When faced with decisions in life, our first question must al-ways be: How does the law of love of God and neighbor influence this situation? • Looking carefully at the First Reading and

Gospel, find specific words that reveal the bonds of affection between God and humani-ty rather than simply dutiful or even fearful obedience from the people. What helpful in-sights about the love of God does today’s Re-sponsorial Psalm offer you? How do you live the commandment of love in your private life and in your public life?

OUR FAMILY PRAYER

Loving and faithful God, through the years the people of our archdiocese have appreciated the

prayers and love of Our Lady of Prompt Succor in times of war, disaster, epidemic and illness.

We come to you,

Father, with Mary our Mother, and ask you to help us in the battle of today against violence, murder

and racism.

We implore you to give us your wisdom that we may build a community founded on the values of

Jesus, which gives respect to the life and dignity of all people.

Bless parents that they may form their children in

faith. Bless and protect our youth that they may be peacemakers of our time. Give consolation to

those who have lost loved ones through violence.

Hear our prayer and give us the perseverance to be a voice for life and human

dignity in our community.

We ask this through Christ our Lord. Our Lady of Prompt Succor, hasten to help us.

Mother Henriette Delille, pray for us that we may

be a holy family.

NOVEMBER BLACK CATHOLIC HISTORY MONTH

Fr. Cyprian Davis, historian of Black Catholic History: A fitting way to celebrate Black Catho-lic History month would be to read “The History of Black Catholics in the United States” by the late Benedictine Father Cyprian Davis. Father Davis’ work was integral to bringing attention nationally and internationally to the ways that people of African descent helped to develop Ca-tholicism from the earliest days up through the middle of the 20th century. His work helped give rise to black Catholic History Month. But, many do not know that Father Davis also chose Catholi-cism. From childhood he was fascinated with the history of Africa and of Catholicism. While a teenager in Washington, DC, he became Catholic. After graduating from high school, Father Davis entered the monastery of St. Meinrad in Indiana where he taught church history to generations of students. Though trained in monastic history, Fa-ther Davis is most well-known for developing black Catholic history as a distinctive field study and scholarship around the country, but especially at the Institute for Black Catholic Studies at Xa-vier University of Louisiana. An exerpt from Choosing Catholicism and Celebrating Black Catholic History month by Cecilia Moore. You may read the article at https://www.chicagocatholic.com/u.s./-/article/2018/10/24/choosing-catholicism-and-celebrating-black-catholic-history-month. Did you know Fr. Cyprian Davis shared his gift of knowledge of Black Catholic History at St. Pe-ter Claver for several summers while he taught at the Institute of Black Catholic Studies at Xavier University?

PRAYER FOR THOUGHT… Hear, O Isra-el! The LORD our GOD is one! You shall LOVE the LORD with all your heart, with all you soul, with all your mind and with all your strength; and you shall LOVE your NEIGH-BOR as yourself. There is no commandment greater than these. LOVE –There is no command-ment greater than this. Live in the spirit of Love. The Lord lives! Blessed be my rock!
