PASTOR'S CORNER

WHAT WAS WRITTEN ON THE GROUND When I was a child, we often wrote on the ground when we played. We made circles to play games. We played tic tac toe and made boundaries to dare someone to cross. We wrote our names in the dirt. I have always wondered what secret message Jesus wrote on the ground in John 8. While Jesus is teaching a group of people, some scribes and Pharisees bring a woman caught in the act of adultery who is about to be stoned. The scribes and Pharisees quote Mosaic Law and question Jesus, asking him, “So what do you say?” Jesus bends down and begins to write on the ground. They continue to press him for an answer. He straightens up and says, “Let the one among you who is without sin be the first to throw a stone.” Again, He bends down and writes on the ground. What secret message could He have written that led all of those present to realize that they were sinners just like the woman caught in adultery? Our priest says scholars have been debating this idea for a long time. Nobody knows the answer, but here are my thoughts. The group of people surrounding this woman were planning to hold an execution, similar to a lynching or a public execution by hanging. They were already carrying the stones that would kill the woman. They could be considered a serious threat not only to the woman, but also to Jesus. The Pharisees were trying to trap Him. When Jesus bent down to write on the ground, He gave the scribes and Pharisees ample opportunity to assault him. Yet none did. Instead, they went away one by one, beginning with the elders. What was His message? What could he have written that caused the crowd to trickle away? I do not know. I also wonder, was this the first example of the Sacrament of Penance? Whatever Jesus said, it caused the scribes and Pharisees to rethink their actions. Jesus told them (and us) to consider their own transgressions before judging others. Who is worthy to judge? Only Jesus. Since Jesus is without sin, he could have condemned the woman, but instead His words were, “Woman, where are they? Has no one condemned you?” She replied, “No one, sir.” Then Jesus said, “Neither do I condemn you. Go (and) from now on do not sin anymore.” I am truly comforted by those words because Jesus is telling me that he will never condemn me. All I have to do is use the Sacrament of Penance and promise to try not to sin and He will not condemn me. Wow! What a beautiful lesson. Our Lord and Savior desires to forgive our sins rather than condemn us to everlasting punishment. When I walk out of the confessional, John 8 will have a new meaning. Jesus offered the woman forgiveness, and He offers the same gift to us. Our God is gracious and generous, offering forgiveness and love instead of condemnation. All we have to do is to accept that love unconditionally. God Bless, Anonymous Lay Person
