Help decorate the church for Easter. A donation of $10 will help provide for the purchase of Easter lilies. Contributions may be given to

Jennifer Silvius or Heather Halka.

Can you help? Daughter Shannon and son-in-law Geoff are

coming from Virginia to visit for a week and are bringing Katie, who will be 9 months old. As they can't travel with the baby equipment, I'm wondering if any members in our congregation have a playpen, high chair, stroller, and car seat we could borrow for a less than a week, from

May 21st to May 26th. We would truly appreciate it! Thanks, Susan Ohanneson Bennett

individuals.

The Work Program allows the opportunity to earn groceries and produce through any type of work accomplished through physical needs of St. Paul’s Episcopal Church and The Food

sweeping the grounds or parking lots, tending to the flower beds, and assisting in P.R. efforts.

Arlo Guthrie in Concert at the Fox

CSUB's 2014 Grapes of Wrath celebration continues on April 9th, with a special concert

by Arlo Guthrie, son of the famous singer-songwriter Woody Guthrie (This Land is Your Land, etc.), who in the '30s and '40s became one of the most important voices of the migrant farm workers in California. We expect Arlo Guthrie to sing some of those

songs, as well as his own, to help us focus attention on the history and culture of the Valley in the Dust Bowl era. The concert is open to the public.

Forgiveness – an AA Perspective

I have found that I must forgive others in all

situations to maintain any real spiritual progress.

I must forgive injuries, not just in words, or as a

matter of form, but in my heart. I do this not for the

other person's sake, but for my own sake.

Resentment, anger, or a desire to see someone

punished are things that rot my soul. Such things

fasten my troubles to me with chains. They tie me

to other problems that have nothing to do with my

original problems.

Joint statement from Michigan bishops on

marriage equality ruling As Christians and leaders in the Episcopal Church, we applaud Judge [Bernard A.] Friedman’s decision to overturn Michigan’s ban on equal marriage as a step on the right side of history. As the case of DeBoer v. Snyder continues to work its way through our judicial system, it is our hope that future judges will continue to find that the denial of marriage to same-sex couples is a denial of human dignity and a denial of rights under the law. We look forward in hopeful anticipation to the day when we can recognize all faithful and covenantal relationships between any two people regardless of sex, both within the Church and within our society.

Anti-gay Christians evangelize hate abroad —by Kapya Kaoma In the countries where American evangelicals market their culture wars, persecution follows.

If you live in the United States, it's easy to be lulled into thinking that the battle for broader civil rights for gay people is nearly over. The last few years have brought important victories in courts, legislatures and at the ballot box, and momentum is firmly on the side of increased equality.

That's not true, however, in other parts of the world. The vitriol that has fueled U.S. culture wars for so long is now being exported, and some of our most ardent culture warriors are finding a far more receptive audience abroad.

In nations such as Uganda, Russia, Nigeria and Belize, an insidious homophobia engineered in America is taking root. I have seen this hate being spread with my own eyes.

Valley Rain —by Jack Hernandez

Jack Hernandez is a local poet and Professor Emeritus of Philosophy and English at Bakersfield College and Director of the Norman Levan Center for the Humanities, Bakersfield College. He has published poems in Midweek before and has published poetry in a variety of journals and books, including the Anglican Theological Review.

Rain rinses they say washes dirty air launders eyes, Veiled mountains suddenly appear dark shoulders against the sky, Boundaries fixed abrupt yet soothing seen understood on articulated streets in the valley of belief.
