I fast twice a week and I pay tithes on my whole income” (Lk 18:11-12) The tax collector stood off at a distance, not even raise his eyes to heaven, but beat his breast and prayed, “O God, be merciful to me, a sinner” (Lk 18:13b) Via his own words, the Pharisee exhibited himself as self-righteous and proud: he saw only himself and not God; he took center stage and God was in the periphery. On the other hand, the tax collector, who cannot even raise his head, just beat his breast and with humil- ity, he prayed: “O God, be merciful to me, a sinner” (Lk 18:13b) His prayer “challenged [him] to hide absolutely nothing from God; [and he] surrendered himself unconditionally to God’s mercy.” He humbled himself and he acknowledged his sinfulness before God. A humble heart opens its door to God’s mercy and love. The tax collector’s virtue of humility is then the model to emulate. Hence, our mission today, or per- haps in our lifetime is to be HUMBLE. Pride makes us artificial but humility makes us real! St. Augustine said: “It was pride that changed angels into devils; it is humility that makes men [and women] as angels.” Thus, my questions to all of you are: “Who do you want to be: a Pharisee or a tax collector? Devils or angels?” The answers are in your hearts! Blessings! Fr. Romy, MS Pastor

OUR PARISH MISSION STATEMENT

We, the people of St. Paul the Apostle Catholic Faith Community, Baptized into Jesus Christ, formed by Word and Sacrament, and Empowered by the guidance of the Holy Spirit, Seek to be a visible sign of God’s love. We seek to build the Kingdom of God by: Using our unique gifts to minister to one another, Welcoming all and caring for those in need, Teaching our faith to others and Uniting in worship as a family with the Body of Christ.

Dear Holy People of God: Fellow pilgrims, today’s gospel tickles our spiritual imagination! It presents two contrasting characters, and two distinct prayers.

The two contracting characters are: the Pharisee and tax collector! The Pharisee is a religious leader and model of piety in the community while the tax collector is a public sinner by virtue of his occupation.

The two distinct prayers are the following:

The Pharisee prayed: “O God, I thank you that I am not like the rest of humanity – greedy, dishonest, adulterous – or even like this tax collector. I fast twice a week and I pay tithes on my whole income” (Lk 18:11-12)

The tax collector stood off at a distance, not even raise his eyes to heaven, but beat his breast and prayed, “O God, be merciful to me, a sinner” (Lk 18:13b)

Via his own words, the Pharisee exhibited himself as self-righteous and proud: he saw only himself and not God; he took center stage and God was in the periphery. His pride made him a hypocrite. With pride controlling his mind and conquering his heart, he already padlocked the door of his heart to God’s love and mercy. Hence, conversion was farfetched to happen in his life.

On the other hand, the tax collector, who cannot even raise his head, just beat his breast and with humil-ity, he prayed: “O God, be merciful to me, a sinner” (Lk 18:13b) His prayer “challenged [him] to hide absolutely nothing from God; [and he] surrendered himself unconditionally to God’s mercy.” He humbled himself and he acknowledged his sinfulness before God. A humble heart opens its door to God’s mercy and love.

The tax collector’s virtue of humility is then the model to emulate. Hence, our mission today, or per-haps in our lifetime is to be HUMBLE. Pride makes us artificial but humility makes us real!

St. Augustine said: “It was pride that changed angels into devils; it is humility that makes men [and women] as angels.” Thus, my questions to all of you are:

“Who do you want to be: a Pharisee or a tax collector?

Devils or angels?”

The answers are in your hearts!

Blessings!

Fr. Romy, MS Pastor

Meet your Pastoral Council

The St. Paul Pastoral Council is a consultative body established to assist our Pastor in a variety of areas. We collaborate with him to develop initiatives to achieve the future vision and direction of the parish. We create and implement plans necessary to carry out these initiatives. We are advocates of the parishioners and the St. Paul the Apostle ministries. We facilitate open communications with the people of our parish and present ideas from these discussions/forums to our Pastor. We are an advisory board to our Pastor that assists in establishing the pastoral policies of the parish. We strive to be an example of sacrament, prayer, worship and service in action.

We are a team of 10 parishioners, including one youth member, who serves a 3-year role on the Council in a variety of administrative positions. This week, let’s meet Joan and Maile.

I am Joan Blank and this is my first year on the Parish Council. My family moved to California in 1988 and we were delighted to find the newly formed parish of St. Paul the Apostle. Over the years, my husband and I have been involved in the Hospitality Ministry, Eucharistic Ministry and the Married Couples Club. I look forward to serving in this wonderful parish.

Aloha. I have been a parishioner at St. Paul Apostle since I was very young. My parents have installed a solid religious and faith based foundation in which I proudly pass on to my own children. My father has been my inspiration in becoming an active parishioners and continuously growth in my faith. I am currently involved in the Elizabeth Ministry and Donuts & Coffee Ministry and look forward to learning more about each ministry. Mahalo.

TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITION

Friday’s Solemnity of All Saints and Saturday’s Commemoration of All the Faithful Departed fit well at the beginning of November. The liturgical readings of this final month in the Church year are keyed to the end of time and the fulfillment of Jesus’ saving acts. Nowhere is this more fully celebrated than in Mexico, where November 2 is the “Day of the Dead.” Missionaries moved an ancient Aztec festival from midsummer to November, linking the festival to Christian themes. Today, it is a time for remembering the dead and celebrating the continuity of life, principally by festive picnics in cemeteries. There are special foods and games, and people socialize with other families and tell favorite stories about their dear ones. The sweetness of life is honored by sugary desserts and treats. Flowers, music, lights and feasting assure that the day is not at all morbid. Traditionally, the day begins with Mass, a procession to the cemetery, and a morning feast. Most families have a special dinner with the pan de muerto, or “bread of the dead.” A toy skeleton is baked into the loaf, and the one who bites into it is considered lucky indeed. The dead are not feared, but deeply loved, and this joyful family feast points both to age-old customs and Resurrection faith.

Evangelization & Faith Page 13

O ur modern culture hates weakness, poverty, and neediness. The world

tells us that to get ahead we have to be strong, competent, and self-sufficient. We certainly aren’t supposed to reveal our flaws or fears. This approach lies in stark contrast to our readings today in which we are called to embrace our inherent poverty and allow God to transform it, and us, into incredible riches.

God loves us in our poverty. Just as par-ents are drawn to the needs of their chil-dren, so is God drawn to us in our needi-ness, especially when we recognize how much we need his help and humbly ask him for it. The Gospel reading shows us this in the powerful story of the Pharisee and the tax collector. The Pharisee ap-proaches God with confident assertion; the tax collector comes humbly before God in his need. As the story unfolds, we see that the tax collector has a much bet-ter grasp of his condition before God. He is a model for us of how to approach God, in humility, as a “poor man.” The Gospel way is to admit our utter poverty before God, as did the tax collector. When we do

so, God stands ready and eager to fill our emptiness with his own Spirit.

This theme of God’s response to our pov-erty continues throughout the readings. “The Lord hears the cry of the poor,” (from the responsorial psalm) and “The prayer of the lowly pierces the clouds: it does not rest till it reaches its goal” (from the first reading). Reinforce that call to a complete-ly different way of life—one that recogniz-es and accepts our poverty. The lesson this week shows us that we need a pov-erty that allows God to become our rich-ness, a weakness that allows God to be our strength, and a neediness that draws God to hear our prayers and answer them.

D IGGING DEEPPER FOR ISCUSION FORMED members can

watch the short “Opening the Word “ VIDEO free at sptacc.formed.org Reflect on these following questions with a friend or family: • The presenter, Jim Beckman, helps

us to see how God does not always see things the way we do. What are some differences you noticed about how the Pharisee approaches God with his prayer and how the tax col-lector approaches God?

• How does being “poor” before God go against the way you have been taught to think about yourself and others?

• The readings today encourage us to approach God in our poverty, as a “poor” person. But it is often our

deep fears and insecurities that pre-vent us from admitting our weak-nesses and our “poverties,” and in-stead we try to hide them. What do you want to hide? What are you afraid of letting others see? Do you have a deep fear or insecurity inside you that sometimes drives the way you relate to others, especially those closest to you? How does that fear affect your relationship with God?

P RAYER: Place yourself in the Temple scene of today’s Gospel reading. You

see the Pharisee standing at the front and hear him tell God about his accomplish-ments. Then you notice the tax collector and hear him simply admit his weakness-es to God. Which one do you sympathize with? Which one do you feel the most in common with? Now invite the Holy Spirit to join you. Ask the Spirit to show you an area in your life that you are afraid to let him see. It’s ironic—he sees it already, but we can spend all kinds of energy trying to hide it, even acting as if it isn’t even there. Our anger, our struggle trusting God, our resentment about a past injury or wound, our struggle with selfishness, insecurity, or lust. Pray that God would help you see an area like this in your life, in your heart. And ask for the grace to let him into it. Now, imagine that it is your turn to pray with the Pharisee and tax collector. Where do you stand? What do you say? How do you feel?

We encourage you to take notes as you reflect this weekend’s readings/homily

BEING POOR
