Confirmation Sunday “Always be prepared to give an answer to everyone who asks you to give the reason for the hope that you have” (1 Peter 3:15). “Whoever acknowledges me before men, I will also acknowledge him before my Father in heaven” (Matthew 10:32). Confirmation Sunday is a very special occasion when we publicly profess our faith before others as we ex- plain the reason for the hope which we have. This year at St. Paul we will hold the Rite of Confirmation during the 11:00 a.m. service on May 4. Our 8 th grade confir- mation group consists of just one student this year, Caleb Donavon. As is our custom, during the 11:00 service he will share his personal faith statement, explaining the important role that Jesus plays in his life. Please pray for Caleb as he is confirmed and as he publicly acknowledges Jesus Christ. In the past, in some congregations, the pastor would be the one who would select the special confirmation passage for each confirmand. My tradition has always been to allow the confirmand to select his own Bible passage, as this will en- sure the passage is one he personally finds meaningful. Caleb has chosen John 8:12 as his confirmation verse— When Jesus spoke again to the people, He said, ‘I am the light of the world. Whoever follows Me will never walk in darkness, but will have the light of life.’” Jesus Christ has filled Caleb’s life with true light, washing away the darkness of his sins. Pray with me that Christ will always empower Caleb to walk in that light and to bring glory to Jesus Christ. Confirmation Sunday

“Always be prepared to give an answer to everyone who asks you to give the reason for the hope that you have” (1 Peter 3:15). “Whoever acknowledges me before men, I will also acknowledge him before my Father in heaven” (Matthew 10:32). Confirmation Sunday is a very special occasion when we publicly profess our faith before others as we ex-plain the reason for the hope which we have.

This year at St. Paul we will hold the Rite of Confirmation during the 11:00 a.m. service on May 4. Our 8th grade confir-mation group consists of just one student this year, Caleb Donavon. As is our custom, during the 11:00 service he will share his personal faith statement, explaining the important role that Jesus plays in his life. Please pray for Caleb as he is confirmed and as he publicly acknowledges Jesus Christ.

In the past, in some congregations, the pastor would be the

one who would select the special confirmation passage for

each confirmand. My tradition has always been to allow the

confirmand to select his own Bible passage, as this will en-

sure the passage is one he personally finds meaningful.

Caleb has chosen John 8:12 as his confirmation verse—

“When Jesus spoke again to the people, He said, ‘I am the

light of the world. Whoever follows Me will never walk in

darkness, but will have the light of life.’” Jesus Christ has

filled Caleb’s life with true light, washing away the darkness

of his sins. Pray with me that Christ will always empower

Caleb to walk in that light and to bring glory to Jesus Christ.

Flower Garden Helpers

St. Paul has the opportunity to plant & maintain the flower garden by the bridge at Brookside Park. We took care of this garden last year in memory of friend Dave Cavanaugh. We need to notify the city soon so if you are willing to spend some time playing in the dirt , please contact Tom & Judy Peter at [email protected] or the church office.

Are you an adult who has never been confirmed? Would you like to learn more about the core beliefs of the Christian church, drawn from Scriptures? Would you like to dig deeper into the foundations of our faith and the teachings which come from Christ? We are working to make plans for a new adult confirmation class. The class would involve workbook lessons you complete at home and group discussions with Pastor and other participants in the class. You may attend the class simply to review the material and to refresh your faith, or you may at-tend with a goal of being confirmed. If you are an adult who has an interest in this, please speak to Pastor Jenks very soon.

Thank you to all the members of the congregation that have designated St. Paul Lutheran Church to receive your Thrivent Choice Dollars. At the March Board of Directors Meeting the Board allocated Thrivent Choice Dollars toward the fol-lowing projects:

$1399.07 to complete the funding for the new A/V System. This project is now totally funded and all installations have been completed.

$2000 to an Audio Visual Enhancement Fund. This will allow us to improve the Audio Visual equipment used in our worship services as new technolo-gies become available.

$2000 toward our goal of accelerated payoff of our current church mortgage.

Again thank you for your support of St. Paul Lutheran church. We appreciate and welcome any ideas for the future application of Thrivent Choice Dollars. These funds are being used to meet the goals and mission of St. Paul Lutheran Church.

Board of Evangelism News

Evangelism is getting photography information for updating the Church Picture Directory. Photos will be taken in the Fall, when school starts, and before the snow birds leave. The last directory was done in 2010. Iowa District West has given St. Paul a grant of $500 for our continuing evangelism to welcome the un-churched to join St. Paul Lutheran Church, and to help with on-going 'fishing net' into the community. On March 31, Ron and Julie Coy, Inez Smith, and Dick Peterson went to Mapleton, Iowa to receive the grant.

“Book to Know” Our Books to Know group is very excited about our plans for the coming year. There are so many books that our group wanted to read and discuss that we decided to meet this sum-mer and added another meeting time next year. Although we don’t meet every month, we usually meet on the second Thurs-

day of the month. However we will meet on a Tuesday night in July and the third Thursday in April to work around holiday and vacation plans.

Here are the books we plan to read next year and also the dates and places we will meet. All meetings will begin at 7 PM.

Thanks to all of you who brought bas-kets to the quilting room. Your response was great and at this point, we have plenty.

SINGING WITH THE LUTHERANS

by Garrison Keillor

I have made fun of Lutherans for years - who wouldn't, if you lived in Minnesota? But I have al-so sung with Lutherans and that is one of the main joys of life, along with hot baths and fresh sweet corn. We make fun of Lutherans for their blandness, their excessive calm, their fear of giving offense, their lack of speed and also for their secret fondness for macaroni and cheese. But nobody sings like them. If you ask an audience in New York City, a relatively Lutheran-less place, to sing along on the chorus of Michael Row the Boat Ashore, they will look daggers at you as if you had asked them to strip to their underwear. But if you do this among Lutherans they'll smile and row that boat ashore and up on the beach! And down the road! Lutherans are bred from childhood to sing in four-part harmony. It's a talent that comes from sitting on the lap of some-one singing alto or tenor or bass and hearing the harmonic intervals by putting your little head against that person's rib cage. It's natural for Lutherans to sing in harmony. We're too modest to be soloists, too worldly to sing in unison. When you're singing in the key of C and you slide into the A7th and D7th chords, all two hundred of you, it's an emotionally fulfilling moment. I once sang the bass line of Children of the Heavenly Father in a room with about three thou-sand Lutherans in it; and when we finished, we all had tears in our eyes, partly from the prom-ise that God will not forsake us, partly from the proximity of all those lovely voices. By our joining in harmony, we somehow promise that we will not forsake each other. I do believe this: People, these Lutherans, who love to sing in four-part harmony are the sort of people you could call up when you're in deep distress. If you're dying, they'll comfort you. If you're lonely, they'll talk to you. And if you're hungry, they'll give you tuna salad! The following list was compiled by a 20th century Lutheran who, observing other Lutherans, wrote down exactly what he saw or heard: 1. Lutherans believe in prayer, but would practically die if asked to pray out loud. 2. Lutherans like to sing, except when confronted with a new hymn or a hymn; with more than four stanzas. 3. Lutherans believe their pastors will visit them in the hospital, even if they don't notify them that they are there. 4. Lutherans usually follow the official liturgy and will feel it is their way of suffering for their sins. 5. Lutherans believe in miracles and even expect miracles, especially during their stewardship visitation programs or when passing the plate. 6. Lutherans feel that applauding for their children's choirs would make the kids too proud and conceited. 7. Lutherans think that the Bible forbids them from crossing the aisle while passing the peace. 8. Lutherans drink coffee as if it were the Third Sacrament.

Page 10: St. Paul Epistle—May 2014 · 04.05.2014 · Peter 3:15). “Whoever acknowledges me before men, I will also acknowledge him before my Father in heaven” (Matthew 10:32). Confirmation

PAGE 10 ST. PAUL EPISTLE—MAY 2014

9. Some Lutherans still believe that an ELCA bride and an LCMS groom make for a mixed marriage. 10. Lutherans feel guilty for not staying to clean up after their own wedding reception in the Fellowship Hall. 11. Lutherans are willing to pay up to one dollar for a meal at church. 12. Lutherans think that Garrison Keillor stories are totally factual. 13. Lutherans still serve Jell-O in the proper liturgical color of the season and think that peas in a tuna noodle casserole adds too much color. 14. Lutherans believe that it is OK to poke fun at themselves and never take themselves too seriously. And finally, you know when you're a Lutheran when: It's 100 degrees, with 90% humidity, and you still have coffee after the service; You hear something really funny during the sermon and smile as loudly as you can; Donuts are a line item in the church budget, just like coffee; The communion cabinet is open to all, but the coffee cabinet is locked up tight; All your rela-tives graduated from a school named Concordia; When you watch a "Star Wars" movie and they say, May the Force be with you, you respond, "and also with you"; And lastly, it takes ten minutes to say good-bye.
