From the Dean’s Desk

Dear Friends,

This Sunday’s Gospel presents us with a vital and significant

moment in the relationship between Jesus and his disciples. In this

part of his Gospel [16:13-20], Matthew relates two questions which

Jesus asks of his disciples, followed by a blessing and

commissioning of Peter, based on his proclamation of faith in Jesus

as the Messiah.

At Caesarea Philippi, a city in the northern part of Palestine, at the

source of the Jordan River, we see Jesus conducting an opinion

poll of his disciples. He asks them two questions: ‘who do people

say I am?’ and secondly, ‘who do you say I am?’ To the first

question, the disciples give the obvious answers: John the Baptist,

the Prophet Elijah or one of the other prophets. All this seems

consistent with the mission and ministry of Jesus at the time: he

came to preach a certain message and to evoke a particular

response from the people – as any worthwhile prophet would do.

The second question is rather pointed and personal. It asks the

disciples to make a personal commitment with regard to their belief

in the person of Jesus. Simon Peter, as usual makes the

statement on behalf of the others: ‘you are the Christ, the Son of

the living God’.

It is noteworthy that only at this time does Jesus speak of ‘church’

and of ‘church foundations’. It is only when Jesus could elicit from

his disciples a basic faith statement with regard to his person that

he could speak to them of church.

It is significant to realise that for us any significant understanding

and appreciation of the concept of church is determined by the way

in which we think of and believe in the person of Jesus. Jesus and

church go together.

It is significant that the disciples at this point in time have no

awareness of the coming suffering, death and resurrection of

Jesus. This comes later in Matthew’s Gospel [16:21; 17:22-

23 and 20:17-19].

26 & 27 August - 21st Sunday in Ordinary Time - Year A

For the moment, Jesus orders his disciples not to

tell anyone that he is the Messiah because they

have much more to learn before they can

accurately communicate the full truth of faith in

Jesus as Messiah. Once they have experienced Jesus’ death and

resurrection and have received the abiding presence of the Holy

Spirit, Jesus will commission them to go out to all the nations and

proclaim the Good News of salvation [cf Matthew 28:16-20].

We heard St. Paul in the second reading [Romans 11:33-36] sum

up the wonder of God’s plan of salvation, reminding us that his plan

is meant for all people. His words are also a reminder that we are

Same-Sex Marriage Postal Plebiscite As you will be aware, the bill to enable a compulsory plebiscite on whether marriage should be redefined to allow same-sex marriages was again rejected by the Senate. The nation is now preparing for a non-compulsory postal vote - unless that course is blocked by the High Court. Ballot papers will be mailed out from 12 September and need to be returned by 7 November.

The Coalition for Marriage will be formally launching their campaign next week and a website www.coalitionformarriage.com.au will be live on Monday. This will be a place where people can register to volunteer, donate and to find out the latest information about the vote. I urge you to pray for the future of marriage in Australia and that the Holy Spirit will guide all Australians in the vote ahead.

Vote No, to keep marriage as a unique relationship between a woman and a man.

Clergy The Clergy Support Foundation of the Diocese of Parramatta

assists in meeting the needs of the retired and sick priests of the

Diocese, and an annual appeal, The Bishop’s Collection for Retired

and Sick Clergy, is held on Father’s Day each year to support the

Foundation. It is hoped to raise $200,000 each year through this

Last year, through your generosity we reached the target with

donations totalling $205,000 and the Foundation thanks you for this

contribution.

The appeal in the Diocese will be held on weekend of 2-3 Sept.
