Tom and the leprechaun 1. Read the Irish folktale on St Patrick's Day.
One cold, winter night as Tom walked home, he heard a soft 'Tap! Tap! Tapping!' in the bushes. Someone was whistling a happy tune, keeping time with the tapping.
As quietly as he could, Tom tiptoed closer. Underneath the bushes, a small leprechaun sat on a pile of stones fixing a tiny shoe. He was so busy whistling and tapping, that, before he knew it, Tom had seized him with his hand.
'Let me go!' yelled the leprechaun. 'Why are you grabbing me so rudely?'
'Give me your magic purse filled with gold!' said Tom.
'I have no purse', replied the leprechaun. 'Three times this week I've been robbed! My purse is gone!'
'Then tell me where your treasure is buried!' demanded Tom. 'I know leprechauns always bury their treasure nearby!'
'That's been taken, too!' shouted the leprechaun angrily. 'I have no treasure left!'
'I'll have the three wishes then', said Tom. 'I know everything about leprechauns. I'm not taking my eyes off you. I know if I do, you will surely disappear!'
'I can see what a clever fellow you are. No-one can trick you. But think very carefully about your three wishes. It's a big decision to make.'
So Tom looked thoughtfully up at the night sky where the stars twinkled and the clouds danced. When he looked back to tell the leprechaun his first wish, there was no-one in sight.
2. On a separate sheet of paper, write:
(a) a description of each character and draw an illustration
