27th Sunday in Ordinary Time At a workshop for educators, the speaker asked the teachers to make a ‘top 10’ list

of the things they thought were most important for their students to learn in the

coming school year. It proved to be a real challenge. Some made lists using each

subject they taught; others listed general concepts and principles; still others wrote

general goals about student’s work, knowledge and self-esteem. Everyone realized

that there is an awful lot to learn and never enough time to learn it all. Teachers

must pick and choose their lessons carefully if their teaching is to make a difference. Our faith has a lot to offer with its theology, spiritual traditions, prayers, saints,

morality, and social teaching. If you had to list the top 10 things you appreciate

about your religion, what would they be? What beliefs and practices mean the most

to you? Are these the same things you teach your kids? How well do you know your

faith? A better understanding of faith is easy to develop. Use the Bible, the Catechism,

adult classes, spiritual books, lives of saints, and church art. Ask questions and find

the answers on the internet. Pay attention to the homily, the prayers and the readings

at Mass. With a little effort, you can experience your own spiritual renewal and

create a ‘top 10’ list that really makes a difference. ~James Gaffney

Would you like to make a difference in your community, the country, or the

world? Do you want to serve those in need and work for social justice?

Check our Response 2017, a free guide listing nearly 200 faith-based

volunteer programs and thousands of opportunities. Volunteers serve full-time for periods of one week to one year or more across the United States

and in more than 100 countries worldwide. Summer and school break

opportunities are also available. Our volunteers are from all walks of life–

from high school to senior citizens and every stage in between. Positions

are available for both single and married volunteers, including those with

children.

Contact Catholic Volunteer Network to receive your free copy/copies of

The Massachusetts Department of Children and Families is

currently in need of Volunteer Case Reviewers for the Lowell area.

A Volunteer Case Reviewer, in each case review, can make a

difference in a child's life. The volunteer will be expected to look at

each child’s placement in an objective manner, to raise questions

pertaining to the information shared at each meeting, to encourage

sensitivity to the family’s cultural/ethnic background when

appropriate, and to assist in reaching a consensus among the

participants at each case review meeting. Volunteer case review-

ers will receive training, ongoing support, a stipend and will be

asked to participate in at least one case review meeting per month

for one year.

For more information about becoming a Volunteer Case Reviewer,

please call 617-748-2000 or visit www.mass.gov/dcf

Lk 17: 5-10 The apostles said to the Lord, "Increase our faith." The Lord replied, "If you have faith the size of a mustard seed, you would say to this mulberry tree, 'Be uprooted and planted in the sea,’ and it would obey you. "Who among you would say to your servant who has just come in from plowing or tending sheep in the field, 'Come here immediately and take your place at table'? Would he not rather say to him, 'Prepare something for me to eat. Put on your apron and wait on me while I eat and drink. You may eat and drink when I am finished'? Is he grateful to that servant because he did what was commanded? So should it be with you. When you have done all you have been com-

21 Faith—what is it? Faith is knowledge and trust. It has seven character-istics: • Faith is a sheer gift of God, which we receive when we fervently ask for it. • Faith is the supernatural power that is absolutely necessary if we are to attain salvation. • Faith requires the free will and clear understand ing of a person when he accepts the divine invite • Faith is absolutely certain, because Jesus guarantees it. • Faith is incomplete unless it leads to active love. • Faith grows when we listen more and more care fully to God’s Word and enter a lively exchange with him in prayer. • Faith gives us even now a foretaste of the joy of heaven.

[153-165, 179-180, 183-184]

Many people say that to believe is not enough for them; they want to know. The word “believe”, however, has two completely different meanings. If a parachutist asks the clerk at the airport, “Is the parachute packed safe-ly?” and the other man answers casually, “Hmm, I be-lieve so”, then that will not be enough for him; he would like to know it for sure. But if he has asked a friend to pack the parachute, then the friend will answer the same question by saying, “Yes, I did it personally. You can trust me!” And to that the parachutist will reply, “Yes, I believe you.” This belief is much more than know-ing; it means assurance. And that is the kind of belief that prompted Abraham to travel to the Promised Land; that is the faith that caused the →MARTYRS to stand fast till death; that is the faith that still today upholds Chris-tians in persecution. A faith that encompasses the whole person

Programa de Educ. Religiosa

taza! ¡Oh que feliz haríamos a Jesús!
