In less than two years, St.Michael’s will once againpropel into yet anotherillustrious and grandcelebration – this time itis our one hundred yearsof glorious and remarkableexistence.

Throughout these years, St. Michael’s has kept its legacy alive, upholds faithfully to thedistinctive La Sallian values and provides many opportunities for personal and characterdevelopment.

As we look forward to our 100 years, we are proud that St. Michael’s has always cherishedits mission and responsibilities to the poor, the neglected and the overlooked as advocatedby our founder John Baptist De La Salle.

We will continue to give greater attention to the marginalized, and to the less appealingstudents through personalized guidance, community service projects and outreach programs.

St. Michael’s has never failed in realizing its dream of achieving anything simply becauseits fraternity believes in the impossible. Three years ago, no one would have thought ofhaving a three-storey primary school building built to replace the five-decade old, dilapidated St. Michael’s 1 and 2 premises. When old boys, the Brothers, the Board, parentsand society at large believed that something had to be done for our children, hats werepassed around and a vision turned into reality. Now, the U-Paul Building stands proudly togreet its sons day and night, a clear testimony of individuals who want to make a change.

The walkway, the Adrian Tsen Pavilion, the OMA secretariat, the passage to the schooloffice, the changing of roof tiles, the additional rooms for Sixth formers and therefurbishment of the 50-year-old science laboratory are some of St. Michael’s notable andinspiring projects to usher in its Centennial Celebrations comes 2012.

St. Michael’s, since its inception in 1912, has provided well-balanced and salutary educationthat consists of more than academic achievement, it harnesses and imbues true educationwhich moulds individuals towards maturity and responsible characters.

The combined efforts in advocating excellence and a caring yet challenging schoolenvironment have always been the hallmark of a Lasallian school.

As we walk the journey in reflecting our existence, St. Michael’s will constantly endeavorto provide a holistic education for the young, teaching them to become men of values andwholesome individuals.

Dear readers,

It is with immense delight that The Editorial Board of 2009presents to you ‘The Michaelian’ with the theme“Upholding The Great Michaelian Ethos.”

Every year we reflect on how the school year has beenand how we try to strive for better; which is why themagazine serves as a beautiful reminder of how our schoolyear has been, be it a happy or difficult one. Almost everyhappy and sad moment is captured in this magazine, along with the trials and tribulations that get us there. This year the magazine hopes to serve as a reflection of

our personal attachments to the school and how it has molded us into what wehave become. Being part of this school has always placed importance in society; whatwe become in society and how we give back to society. It is hoped that the lessonswe learned in school will help us become better people. In school, we have lessonsbefore a test, but in life, we face tests that teach us lessons. Only once we havelearned ourselves can we hope to make a difference.

I would like to mention special thanks to my fellow editors and the editorial teamfor without them, this magazine production would not be possible. On behalf ofthe board, we would like to thank all teachers and everyone who helped for theirsupport and guidance throughout the course of this production.

Finally, we would like to wish everyone all the best in future comings and goingsas we look ahead to the following year while reflecting and reminiscing on the past.

Life is like a mirror, what we see out there, we must first see in ourselves.

Best Wishes

Dear readers,Aiming for that somewhat near to perfect magazine

during my tenure was easier to dream than to achieve afterexperiencing numerous roadblocks and setbacks. But themagazine you’re holding today would be nothing withoutthese important people who played its role in making thismagazine a success.

My praise goes to God Almighty for seeing me throughthe whole production of this magazine, taking the T’s off myCAN’Ts whenever I stumbled. To my teacher advisor, Tn. Hj.

Mohd. Sidik and the teachers-in-charge, thank you for your guidance and support. Specialthanks also to Mr. Ravindran and Mr. Peter Khiew, for spending time to edit the schoolmagazine drafts on my behalf. I owe a debt to my fellow editors - Nicholas Ling, Alex MichaelPereira and Nurul Syazwani for putting in every detail of this magazine meticulously. To theEditorial Team; whose names are too many to be mentioned, thank you for all your hardwork. My heartfelt thanks also goes to Khor Siew Boon and Chuah Chin Yin, both amazingpeople who ran everywhere for me during the last minute magazine touch-ups. To MadamEvelyn Chua of the Sin Boon Beng Printing Company, thank you for all your effort andcooperation that somewhat made the production of this magazine a breeze for me!

Both fleeting and low moments during my 6 month stint here has brought out some ofthe very best in me I never knew I had. Opportunities to shoulder different and newresponsibilities began to open one up after another, and I am currently enjoying myselfdiscovering life and the better person I can be. Honestly, nothing beats to know that I havegood friends surrounding me at the end of the day. They were great people who were here, not only just to have a good laugh together or to poke fun at the ironies of life with. Butthey were also there to go the extra mile for me and backed me up when the going getstough. I truly marvel at the fistful of good friends I have! Here in St. Michael has definitelytaught me well on important life lessons. A good training ground when it comes to dealingwith tough situations and handling nasty people who tried to intimidate in their own funnyways. I quote Eleanor Roosevelt:

“Nobody can make me feel inferior unless I let them to.”

Lastly, I can’t wait any longer to say this after waiting for months long to complete thisyearbook in time. The Editorial Board of 2009 proudly presents to you the fruits of our labour,‘The Michaelian – Upholding the Great Michaelian Ethos’. All the hard work, sweatswith the amount of crazy roadblocks are finally paid in full. The editors can come out toplay now! Enjoy JQUIS UT DEUS

KETUA PENGARAH PELAJARAN MALAYSIA

Sekian, terima kasih.

PEGAWAI PELAJARAN DAERAH KINTA UTARA

BROTHER VISITOR OF LA SALLIANSCHOOLS Malaysia, Singapore & Hong Kong

Greetings to you from the La Salle Provincialate, Petaling Jaya.Peace and Joy be with all of you.

As we come to the end of the 2009 school year I would like to join you in giving thanks toGod for all the blessings you have enjoyed and the challenges you have faced during thisacademic session.

As a member of the Lasallian Family of Schools in Malaysia, I wish to thank the Principal, teachers and support staff for promoting the Lasallian Spirit in your school which is builtaround the three pillars of Faith, Zeal for Service and Community.

Our founding father, St. De La Salle came from a rich family and led a relatively easy life.He did not really need to work. However, he saw a great number of poor childrendesperately needing the opportunity to go to school so that they could have some hope inlife. He was deeply touched by their plight and devoted his whole life to provide themwith a good education. As Lasallians we must always be people with “eyes wide open” forthose who are in special need. Our spirit of “Zeal for Service” calls on us to reach outgenerously to the needy, not for our own gain or glory, but because we are brothers andsisters irrespective of race, colour or creed.

“The service ethnic” is an essential characteristic of a true Lasallian school. I congratulateand thank all teachers and students who are involved in doing community service in groups.I would strongly encourage you to strengthen these groups and to develop serviceprogrammes which include all students in one way or another.

A special word of thanks to the editorial team for giving me this opportunity to pen a fewwords in your publication. God bless all of you.

BROTHER VINCENT CORKERY

Greetings to staff, students, parents and our well-wishersPerhaps the best kept Michaelian secret has to do with Brother JosephMcNally’s sculpture The Falcon and the Falconer in the school library.

This is on permanent loan from the Brothers of the school. It features a man at full stretch reachingout to a bird in flight. What does it mean? The key is found in the lines of poetry by W B Yeats:TURNING and turning in the widening gyreThe falcon cannot hear the falconer;Things fall apart; the centre cannot hold;Mere anarchy is loosed upon the world,The blood-dimmed tide is loosed, and everywhereThe ceremony of innocence is drowned; The best lack all conviction, while the worstAre full of passionate intensity.

The falcon is a bird of prey which can be trained to obey the human voice. As it soars in the sky thefalconer directs its movements. The poet speaks about the confusion which results when the bird isout of the range of the falconer’s voice: things fall apart, the centre cannot hold. Yeats had his nativeIreland in mind during a time of civil war when the people no longer listened to central authority. Itcan also apply to the modern classroom and modern family.

The teacher or parent today faces a challenge to remain credible, the voice no longer heard. In thissculpture the falconer is seen to soar to be in contact, and when in contact he extends his hands, not to hold or control, but to provide support. This suggests that the teacher or parent of today muststrive to tune into the aspirations and dreams of young people, to lend encouragement and support. The credibility gap between teacher and pupil, parent and child is growing and has to be addressed. This sculpture dates to early 1970’s and may provide an answer. It is part of our Michaelian heritage.

I wish to congratulate warmly Timothy Chee and all who were involved in this year’s stage production. It was worthy of our long tradition. The OMA with its president Mr. Adrian Tsen Keng Yam played animportant part as always. Improvements and upgrading of facilities have been ongoing for which weare indebted to the Chairman Dato’ Sri Lee Oi Hian and the Board, the OMA President Mr. Adrian TsenKeng Yam and OMA, and the PIBG Chairman Mr. Michael Joseph Lee and members. A quiet tribute isdue to Brother Mathew Bay who was responsible for the design and monitoring of projects.

A word of commendation to SMI Principal Mr. Phoon Chong Chee and the staff for their dedicationand hard work towards maintaining standards in all fields. Finally, special praise for presentMichaelians, notably those who have given service in various units and those in leadership roles, forkeeping alive and vibrant our unique Michaelian ethos.

Warmest regards to all Michaelians past and present. God bless

CHAIRMAN, BOARD OF GOVERNORS

This year we again celebrate the accomplishments of our studentsand their remarkable achievements. They have excelled in theirvarious fields and their success is a shining example of how

persistency of discipline and hard work bring results in all things we pursue.

St. Michael’s has always believed that while there should be focus on academic excellence,we must never emphasize solely on Science or Mathematics alone. Real education is aboutbeing balanced intellectually and emotionally and also being knowledgeable culturally andsocially. We must be men and women of dignity and integrity, having the mark anddistinction to excel in our positions both locally and internationally.

As a young Michaelian in the 50’s, I constantly noticed how the Brothers and teachers havegiven greater attention to the poor, the neglected and marginalized. We need not buryourselves in books or journals to learn compassion, kindness or humility. Just walk alongthe corridors of St. Michael and you will learn these qualities. Pick up these virtues andyou are on your way to be great men and women. St. Michael’s has always taught me tohave respect for each individual as a unique person. All these ideals are reflected throughthe theme of St. Michael this year which is “Upholding The Great Michaelian Ethos,” callingits community to hold true to the distinctive brand of La Sallian tradition that stands forhigh personal and academic standards, excellent moral tome and discipline.

It is the responsibility of the school and teachers to ensure that our children grow up tobe responsible citizens who think about giving back to the society and who love all peopleirrespective of race, colour or creed. As for parents it is a widely accepted fact thatsupportive parenting plays an important role in their children’s developments of empathy,pro-social behavior and emotional competence. Children who have received adequateparental guidance were found to be more confident in their academic focus andachievements.

The principal Mr. Phoon Chong Chee and his team of dedicated and committed teachersshould be commended for providing a high level of education for excellence, both inacademic pursuit and character development of our children through outstanding and soundschool management

PENGERUSI PIBGSMK St. Michael, Ipoh.

Thank you for inviting me to write a message in your schoolmagazine.

We are now at the crossroad as our nation’s education system is undergoing another majorchange. As parents we must be responsible for our children’s education and should not takethis responsibility lightly. In turbulent times we must provide an anchor for our children.

It is important for us to verbalise out thoughts and feelings precisely. The language we useto convey them is secondary. Great thinkers of our time thought and spoke in various ancientlanguages long unused, but their ideas remain with us in all modern languages. We mustteach our children to communicate their ideas and emotions accurately. In order to achievethis objective, we must be proficient in a language. It does not matter so much what thelanguage is but how we can master it. If we cannot master a language then we will beunable to convey our thoughts correctly. If we have the original thoughts and they arepassed on correctly and if the world is interested in them our ideas will be translated intothe language of others. We are doomed if we are unable to master a language for thenour ideas will forever remain our dreams. The language we master is not as important asour ideas. A wise man says what he thinks and a foolish man thinks he has to saysomething.

Regardless of the language we master it is imperative that we are proficient in at leasttwo languages. Knowing a smattering of a few languages is useless for then we will beunable to convey our ideas correctly and strongly. The education we receive is only as goodas our ability to put our thoughts into words and action. While our nation’s education systemis undergoing another one of its many changers we must teach our children to master theirlanguages. The anchor we give our children to enable them to sail through this turbulentocean of change will be the proficiency of a language.

Sadly, parents have little control over our nation’s education policy which is why we mustprovide stability for our children and guide them to achieve language proficiency. In takingthis course of action we need to realize that the world we live in is becoming a globalvillage and the ability to know more than one language to succeed is a necessity ratherthan a choice.

OMA PRESIDENT

On behalf of the Old Michaelians’ Association I wish to extendmy warmest greetings to all present Michaelians and theirfamilies.

We are happy to note the many successes achieved by Michaelians over the past year instudies, games, debating and much more. Still fresh in our memories is the performanceby the Michaelian Chinese Orchestra on Speech Day and the splendid choral recitation itemwhich dazzled us all, and of course the smart turn out for the march past on Sports Day.Very specially I want to congratulate the Military Band for doing SMI proud at the statelevel band competition where they were placed a highly honourable second.

With the major projects such as the new primary school and roofing of the main buildingcompleted, the OMA focused this year on upgrading the old chemistry lab and the boys’toilet block, first erected in 1940, with a history that includes the Japanese occupation ofthe school and generations of Michaelians. Work is expected to be completed shortly andwe thank Brother Matthew Bay who has planned the renovation work and has monitoredprogress on a daily basis with his highly valued expertise.

We are all especially happy to note the colourful success of this year’s stage production,THE WARLORD OF TERROR, produced by ever faithful and ever youthful Mr. Timothy Chee, and scripted by Timothy’s son Lihann. The annual stage production is basic to SMI’s traditionin terms of the effort and talent involved and the public image thereby presented by theschool. It represents a great marshalling of all resources, staff, students, PIBG, Board ofGovernors and OMA. It was also our major fund raising project.

The OMA is keeping a focus on the countdown to our first centenary: 1912 – 2012. All ourrecent projects have this in mind. We invite present Michaelians to come on board andmake it a memorable event in the history of the school. We are still at the dreaming stage, real planning will commence in the course of next year. We count on present Michaeliansto play a significant role.

It is the privilege and responsibility of all Michaelians, past and present, to continue aninterest in their beloved Alma Mater and help in any way they can to ensure it will alwaysremain a prime centre for excellence.

OMA continues its tradition of sponsoring the school annual play. This year it was the colorful staging ofWarlord of Terror, which saw the maximum capacity audiences. We were honored with the return of Mr.Timothy Chee to direct the play which was written by his son – Chee Ii Hann.

Our Annual Reunion Dinner was another success which saw a large turnout. The president – Mr. AdrianTsen in his welcoming address highlighted the various projects undertaken by OMA in restoring SMI to itspristine splendor. This is in line with our countdown towards 2012 – Centennial Celebration.

Several projects have already been completed successfully. The most noticeable is the construction of ournew primary school building in fond memory of Rev. Bro. U. Paul, the re-roofing of our main building, upgrading of our toilets, the covered walk-way from the main entrance to the building, the new schoolgate, and resurfacing of roadways around the school with inter-locking bricks.

OMA also organized its annual evening of fellowship with the residence of Asrama Bintang. During the dinner, former Michaelian who is the Chairperson of Riverview Rubber Estates Bhd. Ms. Juliana Devadason presenteda cheque to Sr Henrietta.

OMA continues to work closely with Dato’ Sri Lee Oi Hian, Chairman of BOG, Mr. Joseph Michael Lee, thePTA Chairman and Mr. Phoon Chong Chee, the Principal of SMI.

Akhir sekali, saya ingin mengucapkan terima kasihkepada guru-guru kaunseling Puan Adhariah Thamrin,En. Omar b. Ibrahim dan Cik Nur Rubiyatul Adawiyah

serta guru-guru yang banyak membantu menjayakanprogram-program kaunseling.

Brother Matthew was posted to SMI-Ipoh in January 1993 from St. George’s in Taiping where he hadserved for more than twenty years. At St. George’s apart from being a superb teacher, he was deeplyinvolved in scouting and photography as well as being a qualified swimming and life saving instructor.

In Ipoh, he continued his passion for photography but he opened up other important interests as well. The one that many may not notice is that he is the man behind the scenes when it comes to OMAprojects. He was first to identify the need and could always devise the best way to deal with it: whetherit was the lamentable condition of the canteen, the potholes on our roadways, the state of the toilets, the perpetual confusion arising from the sharing of space and facilities with the primary classes.

The roadways are now beautifully paved, the primary children have their own compound complete withan artistically designed building, canteen and playing space, and their own exclusive entrance. Thetoilets have been upgraded to 5-star quality for both boys and ladies, the canteen has been replacedby a modern food court with a choice of quality dishes that are the envy of other schools, the approachto the school is dramatically upgraded with an impressive entrance, and covered walkway, the mainbuilding has a new roof and a fresh coat of paint, the school office has its own exclusive approachand the OMA secretariat nearby is a gem in its own right.

All this was made possible thanks to his close rapport with the Board and the OMA, and to his abilityto do detailed planning, negotiate with the contractor for the best terms, but above all to his personalmonitoring of work in progress.

Among his other commitments like the photography club and the heritage club, his passion was theliteracy class for Form One pupils with learning difficulties, for whom over many years he was able torecruit and train volunteer student tutors from the Sixth Form.

His impact on the face and on the life of SMI will indeed merit a place in the history of the school.

I don’t remember much butsomeone told me that the fate of the children has changed for the better since myfirst visit here in 1996,’’ said Brother Spitzig.

My warmest afternoon to the master chairperson, Mr. Phoon Chong Cheeprincipal of St. Michael Institution, teachers, parents and my fellow

Michaelians.

I am indeed honoured to receive the “Michaelian of the Year” award. It has always beenmy dream to be the head boy of this great institution, St. Michael’s. The reason then was becausethe head boy get to say the three cheers during the sports day, but when I got the post it wasmore of an opportunity to learn the many lessons of life. An opportunity to meet people and touchthe lives of many. Day after day I grew to learn the greatest of the Lasallian legacy, unconditionallove. I learnt to except people for who they are and treat them as my equal. It is this institutionwhich led me to learn and cultivate that lasallian culture. I certainly would not have receivedthis award if not because of my beloved parents who have constantly supporting me through outmy journey in St. Michael’s. Thank you PAPA and MAMA and my dear brothers.

St. Michael’s has been an instrumental stepping stone for me, it has provided me valuesthat I need in my life, inspirational teachers and great friends. I thank Mr. Waran who is mymentor, godfather and teacher. The constant advice and puzzling questions that he always putsforth whenever I approach him for advice are not direct answers but the question supplementsme to finding the solutions myself, Mr. Velupillai whom I always seek to quell my frustration alwaysand without fail he manages to put a smile on my face, Mr. Martin Jalleh who is a long timefacilitator for the annual prefects camp for inspiring me, Brother Vincent, although I don’t meethim much but in every meet, without fail he has said something which will just make my day.Leroy, Sara, Yoshita, Jie Ee my closest buddies who are always there to teach me things that I wasignorant of and constantly believing in me, the Exco, cabinet members and prefects of theprefectorial board of the term 2008/2009 who have worked tirelessly to keep order in school andlastly all the other Michaelians who have touched my life in one way or another. This award is atribute to all those people who have moulded me into who I am.

The reason St. Michael’s is a great institution is because it encompasses so many peoplewho can work hand in hand regardless of race, religion and age to achieve a common aim. Thisphrases best describe this school, “many voices, one journey” which was the prefects theme forthe year 2006/2007. I have always wonder how Michaelians can always make an impact in society?Michaelians have always contributed to society because we care for the last, the lost and theleast. In whatever we do, we do it by making sure the people around us also benefit. Anotherthing that amazes me also is how Michaelians cherish their school so much and the friends theymade in school. Even after form 5 when everyone were going in our own separate paths, we stillkeep contact with each other. In fact many have even supported me during the challenging time inform 6. I could still recall my friends who have left school constantly inquiring about the school. This is the bond which makes this school so special, it is not this magnificent building but it isthe culture that embroils in this institution, the very people who went through this school whohave built and solidified the legacy St. Michael’s Institution has today. Michaelians are indeedare in a class of their own because of the tradition that we have and the values that we posess.Even after leaving school Michaelians always keep track on what is happening in their school, Irecently had the privilege of meeting with a few former head boys, deputy head boys, head girls, Iwas so amazed that even after leaving school after 10 years, they very much know what ishappening in school. This is the very love that makes us so special and I proudly will tell anyonethat I am a Michaelian. Thank you.

Panjang umur murah rezeki, tahun hadapan kita jumpa lagi.

Sekian, terima kasih.

Speech By Dato’ Seri Lee Oi Hian, Chairman, Board ofGovernors, St. Michael’s Institution at SMI’s Speech andPrize-Giving Day on Wednesday, 24th June 2009 at 2.00pm.

It’s that time of the year again to celebrate the success and accomplishments ofour students and their remarkable achievements.

They have successfully excelled in their various fields and their presence today isa shining example of how persistency, pursuing of discipline, hard work and settingof standards at all times do bring results in all things we pursue.

St. Michael’s has always believed that while there should be focus on excellencein academic achievements, we must never emphasize solely on Science orMathematics alone.

Real education is about being intellectually and emotionally balanced, it is also aboutbeing knowledgeable culturally and socially. We must possess a clear vision to bemen and women of strong character and integrity, having the mark and distinctionto take up responsible positions both locally and internationally and to excel.

Looking at the back cover page of our program book today, I cannot ignore but feelcompelled to touch on the characteristics of a La Salle school.

St. Michael’s has always taught me to respect for each student as a unique person. As a young Michaelian in the 50s, I constantly noticed how the Brothers and teachersat St. Michael’s paid attention to the poor, the neglected and the overlooked. Theygave greater attention to the marginalised and to the less appealing students.

One need not bury in books or journals to learn compassion, kindness or humility.Just walk along the corridors of St. Michael’s, you will learn generosity, patience, compromise and respectfulness. You can learn this in St. Michael’s almost every day.Pick these virtues up and you are on your way to be great men and women!

I acknowledge today the school’s efforts in developing and fostering a learningenvironment where students are given the opportunity to bloom and flourish, both

in academic achievements and co-curricular activities.

This learning environment is only possible when teachers are united and share acommon vision and a shared mission. They work together as brothers and sistersassociated with bonds of mutual respect, cooperation, generosity, patience, humor, andhumility.

All these ideals are reflected through the theme of St. Michael’s this year, which is“UPHOLDING THE GREAT MICHAELIAN ETHOS”, calling its community to hold true tothe distinctive brand of La Sallian tradition that stands for high personal and academicstandards, excellent moral tone and discipline.

These are achieved through a strong spirit of faith, zeal and service to the community.

Ladies and Gentlemen, it is the responsibility of the school and teachers to ensurethat our children grow up to be responsible citizens, who think about giving back tothe society, who love all people irrespective of race, color or creed.

For parents, it is a widely accepted fact that supportive parenting plays an importantrole in the children’s development of empathy, pro-social behavior and emotionalcompetence. Children who received adequate parental involvement were found to bemore confident in their academic focus and achievements.

I must thank the principal Mr. Phoon Chong Chee and his team of dedicated andcommitted teachers for providing a high level of education for excellence, both inacademic pursuit and character development of our children through outstanding andsound school management.

Lastly, my congratulations again to the prize recipients and do continue to keep theMichaelian spirit alive.

Thank you.

MAJOR EVENTS

Open Day marks one of the most important yearly events in thecalendar of SMK St. Michael Ipoh. Parents and guardians ofstudents were invited to meet with the teachers in school to discussabout the student’s academic performance. This event was separatedinto sessions, one in the morning and another in the afternoon.Probably a day dreaded by many students in the school, anxiousfaces could be seen peering from the classrooms as they waitedimpatiently for their parents and guardians to arrive. Despite of theironic scenario, there were also students with their parents who

were beaming with pride with their results;having their weeks of sleepless night ofrevision being paid off handsomely. OpenDay was also an opportunity to sort outthe difficulties teachers and students facein class with their parents. It was alsoan opportunity for parents to givesuggestions that will boost lessons andimprove the student’s performance inclass. Overall, the event was a successjudging from the significant number ofparents and guardians who turned up.

On the 15th of August 2009, a special assembly was held to commemorate our 52nd

Independence Day. Various events were held for this occasion. The ceremony was kickedoff with a splendid performance by our very own Military Band followed by a speechby our principal, Mr. Phoon Chong Chee. The theme for this year ’s National Day was“1 Malaysia – People First, Performance Now”.

Among the splendidly planned programmes that day were the recital of a poem,Independence Day, by Lee Kheng Soon. It was followed by a rendition of patriotic songsby a choir group consisting of Lower Six students and members of the MichaelianEnglish Language Society who expressively belted out songs like “Sejahtera Malaysia”,“Keranamu Malaysia” and “Tanggal 31.” The audience was mesmerized by their greatshowmanship and dynamism. With a strong and prevailing Merdeka atmosphere, theevent culminated with 3 thunderous shouts of “MERDEKA” by the teachers and students.Yes, this has been a great and wonderful year.Selamat Hari Kebangsaan, Malaysia!

“Break Walls, Building Bridges” was the theme for the La Sallian Encounter inthe 8th Penang District Catholic Youth Gathering. It was a gathering held at LaSalle Centre, Ipoh from 29th May (Friday) to 1st June 2009 (Monday). Theparticipants are La Sallian students from all over Malaysia, Singapore, HongKong and Brunei. St. Michael’s Institution, Ipoh was represented by 5Michaelian Catholic Community (MCX) members. They were Alexander a/lAnthony Dars, Charles Hilary Raj, Joel Lee Hoong Zhang, R.J. Kevin a/l Robertand Venkeeran Kyshan a/l Sharmugam. The gathering was filled with lots of

fun, informative and spiritual sessions and games. Some of the sessions were based on thefounder of Institute of the Brothers of the Christian Schools (La Sallian Brothers School) who was St. JohnBaptist de La Salle. During the session, participants were briefed about the life of St. John Baptist de La Salle, the birth of La Sallian Brothers, challenges faced by the La Sallian Schools and how the La Sallian schoolsremained relevant till now. Other sessions were about the challenges teenagers face, how spirituality could bea guide to our life, the life of La Sallian and other Brothers in the past, present and future. Participants werealso blessed by the Las Sallian Brothers who were present. The most memorable session for us was the storyabout the life of Rev. Brother Vincent Cockery who was the last Brother Director of St. Michael’s Institution,Ipoh. He left Ireland to join the La Sallian Brothers at a vey young age. This event was conducted by Mr. IsaacStephen Anthonysamy (Program Director of La Salle Centre), Master Jonathan Goh, Miss Rachael, Miss Pui Yee(all three were former students of SMI) and assisted by Brothers, namely Rev. Brother Vincent Cockery, Rev.Brother Thomas Lavin fsc (Brother Visitor of the La Sallian Schools of Malaysia, Singapore and Hong Kong)and other Brothers. The La Sallion Encounter is truly a memorable gathering as we felt that although theBrothers are no longer directly running the schools, but the La Sallian spirit continues through the ongoingvibrancy of the La Sallian Tradition of Faith, Service and Community.

The 7th Northern Regional La Sallian Convention washeld for 3 days and 2 nights from the 12-14th June2009 at the La Salle Centre, Ipoh. Four schools, namely St. Michael’s Institution, Ipoh, St. George’sInstitution, Taiping, St. Anthony’s Institution, TelukIntan and St. Xavier’s Institution, Penang were eachrepresented by their delegates. Only four from ourbeloved alma mater represented the school in thisyear’s convention and as usual, the school choseForm 4 students. They are, Joel Lee Hong Zhang,Frederick Dylan Pereira, Joshua Loo Zhi Xiong andChoong Li Fatt. Initially, there were supposed to be10 delegates from each school but due to certainproblems, some delegates have failed to attend theconvention.

The theme for the 7th Northern Regional La SallianConvention was “Break Walls, Build Bridges”. Insimple words, the theme’s definition is solvingproblems, making achievements. The themeinculcated in the delegates with the La Sallianspirits and also cultivating leadership qualities.Throughout the convention, there were manysessions conducted by the organizing team. Thesessions conducted comprise of a variety of issues. The issues brought up were improving the school’sdiscipline, personal principles and so on. Most of

the sessions were carried out based on activities in order for delegates to enjoy the process of it. Withenergizers as the opening of each session, we were all refreshed and energetic to participate and to acquiremore during the sessions brought up. There was also a list of games requiring teamwork and skills carriedout.

Generally, we have all widen our scope and we have learned how to see things form a differentperspective. The thought-provoking discussions brought forward were out of the ordinary as we sharedon our principles. Having different people with the different state ofmind made us learn more during this convention. On top of that, there were also thoughts coveringconcerning our legendary founder, John Baptist deLa Salle. We were all inspired by hisaccomplishments and we learned so much on all ofhis sacrifices. He inspired the delegates to reach outin service to the last, the lost and the least.

In a nutshell, the fun and laugh-inducingactivities gave the delegates the opportunity to makenew friends, ensuring a memorable experience. As ourjourney began with many, we ended as one. Theconvention changed us and taught us a lot, fromlearning how to overcome obstacles as a team tolearning how to discuss diplomatically as a family.

During the closing ceremony of the convention, folded cranes were placed on a sheet of paperwhich symbolizes the family bond that we’vecreated throughout each La Sallian during the 3days convention. The folded cranes alsosignifies that we’ve learned to break walls andbuild bridges in the future. All in all, the 3 daysconvention was enriching and enjoyable. Thefour of us would love to share and bring backwhat we’ve learned to others at school.

It was a time for great outdoor adventure for twelve Form Two boysat the highly anticipated LEAD, a programme organised by the YouthSection of the La Salle Centre.

The outing, filled with ingredients ranging from character buildingactivities to team building dynamics, games, jungle trekking andmotivational sessions, has never failed to mesmerize the boys.

The committed and dedicated organizers who assisted in the 3-dayprogram were all working and full time university students who tooktime off just to ensure the success of the program. LEAD was heldfor the first time in June 2002.

It is a uniquely-tailored programme for character building andself-development. Participants were treated with respect and theactivities focused on building self-esteem and self-worth.

We would like to thank Mr. Isaac Stephen, the programmedirector for organizing the outing for us. It was an opportunityfor the students to go for a break and learn so much, definitelysomething they had never experienced before.

St. Michael’s would like to record its appreciation to Ms. JulianaDevadason, Chairman of Riverview Rubber Estates Berhad andMr. Adrian Tsen, the President of Old Michaelians Association.Stressing on the importance of human development and valueformation, both Ms. Juliana and Mr. Adrian had generouslysponsored the entire programme.
