Notes from Fr. Ian…
In May of 2002, Pope St. John Paul II said, "Today we begin the month dedicated to Our Lady, a favorite of popular devotion. In accord with a long-standing tradition of devotion, parishes and families continue to make the month of May a 'Marian' month, celebrating it with many devout liturgical, catechetical and pastoral initiatives!"
St Alphonsus Liguori said: She saw Him born yet believed Him to be eternal. She saw her Son in the crib at Bethlehem and believed that He was the creator of the world. She saw Him poor and in need of food and believed that he was the Lord of the universe. She saw him lying on the straw and believed that he was all-powerful. She saw that He did not speak and yet believed that He was filled with infinite wisdom. She heard Him cry and believed that He was the joy of paradise. She saw Him flee from Herod and believed that He was the King of kings. Finally she saw Him in death, hated and crucified and even though faith waivered in others, she remained firm in her belief that He was God. When Mary says at the Annunciation: I am the handmaid of the Lord, she is saying that she is certain that there is no one greater than God and thus she obeys His plan. Mary is a perfect follower of Christ. Mary obeys completely the New Commandment that Christ gave us: As I have loved you, so you also should love one another.
Thus, the Church gives us the honor of crowning Mary in May. Crowning a statue of the Lord's Mother is sym-bolic of the honor we give her as the one chosen by God to bear His Son, our Savior. At St. Michael Church, we will be crowning the statue of our Mother Mary at the Sunday 10:30am mass on Mother’s Day on May 8th.
In this month of May, I strongly encourage you to pray the Rosary or the Litany of Loreto (below) daily. We must make Our Mother, our perfect example of a Christian way of life, filled with deep faith and true love for her son and all people. Then she will guide us and support us, and enable us to meet and overcome the challenging times of today.
Lord, have mercy. Christ, have mercy. Lord, have mercy. Christ, hear us. Christ, graciously hear us. God, the Father of Heaven, have mercy on us. God the Son, Redeemer of the world, have mercy on us. V. Pray for us, O most holy Mother of God. R. That we may be made worthy of the promises of Christ.
Let us pray. Grant, we beg you, O Lord God, that we your servants, may enjoy lasting health of mind and body, and by the glorious intercession of the Blessed Mary, ever Virgin, be delivered from present sorrow and enter into the joy of eternal happiness. Through Christ our Lord. Amen.
