OUR LORD JESUS CHRIST, KING OF THE UNIVERSE
THE SHEPHERD KING The job of shepherd and the job of king couldn’t be more different from each other. Shepherds are on the lowest rung of society, kings are at the top. But God says, through the prophet Ezekiel, that the Messiah will lead in a way very different from earthly au-thorities who lord it over their people and cause harm with their poor leadership. Our King takes on the job himself. Christ, like a shepherd, will give rest, seek out the lost, bring back the strayed and scat-tered ones. He will heal the wounded and bind up the injured. He does not delegate, but will “shepherd them rightly.” We have a king who cares for us and who is not afraid to “judge between one sheep and anoth-er” (Ezekiel 34:17).
TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITION Today we have a modern feast, less than a century old, and placed at the very end of the li-turgical cycle of Sundays only in 1969. In 1925, the world was in a sorry state from the vantage point of Pope Pius XI. The winds of war had swept the map of Europe raw, and ancient Chris-tian dynasties had fallen in Russia and Spain. Although the Great War had ended, wars were breaking out everywhere. Fascism was already in control in Italy, and Nazism was on the hori-zon for Germany. The disorder making its claim on the human race was, the pope felt, an insult to the Divine Order. Pius XI designated the last Sunday in October as a day of universal recogni-tion of the kingship of Christ. Creating this feast was an act of bravery by the pope, who was standing up against idolatry of the state and the dehumanizing forces of the modern world, things that are not hard to detect in today’s world as well. In 1969 it seemed fitting to move the feast to a place of honor at the end of the year, a way of summing up the whole movement of the liturgical year toward the perfection of the King-dom of God. In recent decades, many Protestant churches have adopted this day from the new Roman calendar, so it is shared now with the Church of England, the Episcopal, Presbyterian, and Lutheran churches, and others.

BLESSED MIGUEL AGUSTÍN PRO (1891-1927) November 23 Graham Greene’s classic The Power and the Glory immortalized Mexico’s persecuted Church of the 1920s. But photographs of Father Pro—arms outstretched to image Christ Cruci-fied, kneeling in prayer before the firing squad, crumpled dead on the ground—vividly, visually remind us that not long ago, not far away, the faith we take for granted cost everything! Born to a mining family, Miguel became a Jesuit and was sent to study Catholic labor movements in Belgium in preparation for evangelizing Mexi-co’s workers. But he returned to find a Mexico determined to annihilate Catholicism, and, like priests before him during Roman persecutions, England’s Reformation, and in China today, ministered secretly to an “underground Church” until apprehended and sentenced to the firing squad. In his final moments, Father Pro blessed his executioners, forgave his enemies, and shouted: “Viva el Cristo Rey!—Long Live Christ the King!”—his defiant, dying proclamation of ultimate, transcendent loyalty. Father Pro’s mar-tyrdom reinvigorated that beleaguered Church, whose countless faithful, never again afraid, would throng John Paul II when he visited Pro’s beloved Mexico fifty-two years later.
TODAY’S READINGS First Reading — I will rescue my scattered sheep (Ezekiel 34:11-12, 15-17). Psalm — The Lord is my shepherd; there is nothing I shall want (Psalm 23). Second Reading — As in Adam all die, so too in Christ all shall be brought to life (1 Corinthians 15:20-26, 28). Gospel — Whatever you did to the least ones, you did to me (Matthew 25:31-46).

rishioners. Read the prophecy passages.

Prayer: Heavenly Father, as we begin this Advent, give light to our eyes and peace to our hearts. May
the Lord find us watching and waiting in joy when He comes. We pray in Jesus' name. Amen.
Advent derives from the Latin adventus meaning ‘arrival’ or ‘approach’. For thousands of years the world waited for the coming of the Messiah to re-deem and to save the human race, restoring man-kind’s relationship to God.
We, too, experience this same longing for the com-ing of Christ. Spiritually, we long for the coming of Christ into our hearts as the Holy Spirit draws us into ever deepening relationship with Him. this year
Our Advent theme is (Is. 7:14) ‘Therefore, the Lord himself will give you a
sign; the young woman, pregnant and about to bear a son, shall name him
Emmanuel. Therefore our Advent season has Expectation, An-nunciation, Proclamation, and Fulfillment. These activities we have scheduled, will increase our an-ticipation of the birth of Christ. All the parishioners of St. Michael are invited to participate in all the activities and be spiritually renewed so that we may celebrate Christmas with hearts and minds ready for the Lord.
