Through daily prayers, the sacraments and by learning and playing together, students come to understand how the power of compassion can bring each and every one of us ever closer to God. Our students learn that being compassionate means accepting others regardless of their differences. Through the act of compassion they learn to make themselves open to a change of heart which in turn, allows them to feel what others feel. Compassion, like all of our virtues, is a virtue best experienced and shared. Congratulations to our students who are receiving their First Commun- ion and Confirmation. We thank Father George, Father Sujan and all at Transfiguration Church for their hard work and commitment to pre- pare our children to receive the sacraments. Many exciting activities are planned for May. We have Catholic Educa- tion Week which includes our junior basketball city meet, our Parish Day Procession with St Marcellus and Transfiguration schools, intermediate band playing at the Woodbine Music Festival, and more. Please support our Cram-a-Cruiser for the Pinball Clemons Foundation. The police cruisers will be here on May 17th. Me to We continues throughout this month as well. We have already made over $1000 that will go towards helping those in need. Thank you to all families that supported our Bags to School program. Proceeds go to help fund our Nutrition Program. CSPC has done so much this year! Please consider joining our very active Parent Council. May also brings the EQAO test for Gr. 3 and 6 students and the CAT 4 test for Gr. 2, 5 and 7 students. These assessments will provide a snapshot of how our students are performing. These tests take place in late May and early June. We encourage parents to make sure their children are prepared for learning by arriving to school well rested, properly fed and ready to take on new challenges. Every day is a day to make sure your child is prepared to learn. Wishing you a wonderful May!!!! Happy Mother’s Day! Mr. F. TOYS FOR HAPPY TOWN REMINDER

Our enthusiastic and energetic Kindergarten Team are asking for your help. If you have Lego, or other toys that you no long-er need, please bring them to St. Maurice so we can use them for kindergarten students. Also, if you have outdoor play mo-biles or other toys, please consider bringing them to school where they can have a new life and make our children very happy.

Bag 2 School Thank you to all families who contributed to the Bags 2 School fundraiser by sending in bags of clothing. All proceeds go to support our Nutrition Program.

APPROPRIATE DRESS CODE –Reminder

As the warmer weather approaches, we remind par-ents and students of the Dress Code at St. Maurice. The full policy is in your child’s agenda . THE DRESS CODE IS ANY COMBINATION OF NAVY BLUE AND WHITE.

Students are expected to dress in an appropri-ate manner that is conducive to a proper learning environment.

Suggested clothing includes long pants, shorts, long and short sleeved t-shirts, golf shirts, sweatshirts, blouses, jumpers, skirts.

There is no crest attached to the tops and clothing can be purchased at any store. Shirts are to be tucked into pants. Jeans are not allowed. Boys must not wear the waistline of their pants below the waist, as this is a safety hazard. Short shorts, halters tops, muscle shirts and clothing with inappropriate slogans and language are not acceptable. During the warmer weather, all junior and intermediate students are to have their shoulders covered (i.e., no spaghetti or thin straps).

Monthly Update from the Board

School Year Calendar 2017-2018 Approved https://www.tcdsb.org/school/SchoolYearCalendar/Pages/Default.aspx

Exploring the Critical Role of Catholic Education in Contemporary Society The Institute for Catholic Education (ICE) wants to hear from everyone in the TCDSB community about Catholic education in Ontario! "Renewing the Promise" is a dialogue . Your input about Catholic education in Ontario - the way it fulfills its mandate as well as the challenges and opportunities of the present moment - will help to guide the work of ICE for the future. A special face to face consultation on “Renewing the Promise” is being scheduled at the TCDSB’s Catholic Education Centre in May. More information will be sent home to parents once details have been finalized or check www.tcdsb.org for the latest news.

You are also invited to offer your ideas TODAY and input on-line through Thought Exchange. Log in to participate: http://signup.thotex.com/iceont/Pyv

Community Consultation for Proposed Changes to Secondary School Admissions Policy The Ministry of Education has directed the TCDSB to adopt fixed attendance boundaries for all secondary schools in order to be consistent with most Ontario school Boards. Complying with the Ministry’s request for fixed attendance boundaries for all TCDSB secondary schools will have a significant impact on the Board’s current Admissions & Placement of Secondary Pupils policy which may affect your child’s choice of high schools. Community consultation on the proposed changes to TCDSB’s Secondary School admissions policy begins on May 1 with an online survey (www.tcdsb.org). A special Secondary School Admissions Consultation Night will be held on Monday, May 8, 2017 from 7 pm to 10 pm at the TCDSB’s Catholic Education Centre at 80 Sheppard Avenue East (next to the Sheppard Subway station). Free parking and child care will be available.

May is Speech, Language and Hearing Awareness Month Did you know that speech and language delays are the most frequently reported problem in children? Early speech and language development has a major impact on future academic success. For example, research shows that a child’s vocabulary when starting school is a prime predictor of school success or failure. We also know that early language skills are directly related to later reading skills, and that children with poor language development have difficulty using lan-guage to learn math and science.

If you have a concern about your child’s speech or language, your school Speech-Language Pathologist (SLP) can help! Speak to your child’s teacher or school principal to find out more, or contact the Speech and Language Department at 416-222-8282, extension 2261. More information here: https://www.tcdsb.org/ProgramsServices/SpecialEducation/Speech/Pages/Welcome.aspx

Get Ready to Get Rolling! Bike to School week is May 29 – June 2, 2017 Join students and teachers across the Greater Toronto and Hamilton Area to celebrate Bike to School Week, May 29 to June 2, 2017. The goal of the week is to inspire initiatives among local schools, school boards and community partners to encourage students to “walk and roll” to school. If the students do not have access to a bicycle, try scooting, skateboarding and rollerblading to school. Roller blades are required to be removed prior to entering the school. Register your school for the 2017 TCDSB Bike to School Week at biketoschoolweek.ca and complete the school reporting survey by June 12, 2017. All schools that complete the school reporting survey will receive a Certificate of Participation.
