Today’s Gospel outlines the heartbreaking experi-ence of Mary and Joseph when they were quite cer-tain they had lost Jesus. He slipped away from the family circle without informing his parents and went off on his own to the Temple. Even Mary and Joseph did not escape the tensions, anxieties and worries which are the ordinary ups and downs of family life. Their joy in finding Jesus was dampened by his sharp words, “Don’t you realize that I must be about my Father’s business?” It was difficult for them to realize that he was growing up, coming of age and assert-ing himself outside his immediate family circle. All parents can easily identify with this happening be-cause it rings so true of our own age with its genera-tion gap. Teen culture and lack of communication. Living in San Francisco or in the San Mateo Area is very expensive, so many members of the family will stay together. Living together and rubbing shoulders with one another demands love, loyalty, respect, and reverence, self-denial and generosity. Few are born to do the great work of the world, but the work that all can do is to make a small home cir-cle brighter and better. A happy home is not made out of bricks and mortar nor luxury carpets, but has its foundations in Christ, who is love. The family of Nazareth was the ideal family because of the pres-ence of Jesus. The same can be true of our family because of the Jesus’ presence there. God can make it a channel of grace if we spend time as a family in prayer. If prayer has not been part of the fabric of home life, or if it has been ne-glected, the new year is an ideal time for fresh start. Today, the Holy Family of Nazareth is set before us as a model and as an inspiration. If we follow in their footsteps we will begin to perceive the mystery of God at the heart of our lives and especially at the center of our family.

El Evangelio de hoy describe la experiencia desgarradora de María y José cuando se dieron cuenta de que habían perdido a Jesús. Se escabulló del círculo familiar sin informar a sus padres y se fue solo al templo. Incluso María y José no se escaparon de las tensiones, ansiedades y preocupaciones que son los altibajos comunes de la vida familiar. Su alegría al encontrar a Jesús se vio empañada por sus afiladas palabras: “¿No te das cuenta de que debo ocuparme de los asuntos de mi Padre?” Les fue difícil darse cuenta de que estaba creciendo, alcanzando la mayoría de edad y afirmándose a sí mismo fuera de su situación inmediata del círculo familiar. Todos los padres pueden identificarse fácilmente con este suceso porque parece ser tan cierto en nuestra época con las nuevas generaciones. Cultura adolescente y falta de comunicación. Vivir en San Francisco o en el área de San Mateo es muy costoso, por lo que muchos miembros de la familia permanecen juntos. Vivir juntos codo a codo nos exige amor, lealtad, respeto y reverencia, abnegación y generosidad. Pocos nacen para hacer el gran trabajo del mundo, pero el trabajo que todos pueden hacer es hacer que un pequeño círculo de hogares sea más brillante y mejor. Un hogar feliz no está hecho de ladrillos y cemento ni de alfombras de lujo, sino que tiene sus cimientos en Cristo, que es el amor. La familia de Nazaret era la familia ideal por la presencia de Jesús. Lo mismo puede ser cierto de nuestra familia debido a la presencia de Jesús allí. Dios puede convertirla en un canal de gracia si pasamos tiempo en familia en oración. Si la oración no ha sido parte de nuestra familiar, o si se ha descuidado, el año nuevo es un momento ideal para comenzar de nuevo. Hoy, la Sagrada Familia de Nazaret se nos presenta como modelo y como inspiración. Si seguimos sus pasos, comenzaremos a percibir el misterio de Dios en el corazón de nuestras vidas y especialmente en el centro de nuestra familia.
