ChoosingyourPostgraduateprogramme

You should have a good first degree and/or Masters, and academic interest that closely coincides with the academic expertise of a member of staff. Further details on entry requirements and the application process can be found on the website. You will need to discuss your application with a member of supervisory staff in your field.

For initial enquiries on research degree programmes please contact the relevant Head of School for the discipline area you are interested in or for general enquiries contact 020 8240 4302.

Vocational Programmes

PGCEProgrammesThe University College offers PGCE Programmes in primary and secondary teaching. Secondary training in Geography, Mathematics, Modern Languages, RE, Biology, Chemistry, Physics, Applied ICT, Business Education and Health and Social Care/ Society, Health and Development on a full time basis for one year. Primary training is offered part time over 5 terms and full time for one year.

You are very strongly advised to read our PGCE secondary brochure or primary booklet for full details of programmes, entry requirements and advice on the application.

Please see our website www.smuc.ac.uk/pgce or contact 020 8240 4027 for copies.

The well established culture of research and scholarship is further evidenced by strong research links with other institutions both at home and abroad, as well as with community organisations and groups.

We offer the opportunity to study for an MPhil/PhD, working on your research project alongside highly experienced researchers. Details of the areas where we can support research can be found on the University College website.

A research degree involves defining your own area of research enquiry, working closely with a team who will guide and support you. You should, however, be aware that a research degree is very much an independent piece of work and as such requires the ability to structure and manage your own time.

An MPhil is normally in the region of 40,000 words in length and is usually completed within two years full-time and four years part-time. A PhD is in the region of 80,000 words and is normally completed within three years full-time or six years part-time. You will be examined through your thesis and by viva voce examination.

All students who have not already completed a relevant Masters Degree, or other appropriate postgraduate research methods training, are required to complete a suitable research methodology course early in their registration as part of their programme of study. This will provide you with a firm grounding for your research project.

Taught Masters Programmes The University College offers a significant portfolio of taught Masters programmes encompassing firmly established programmes, as well as a range of new and innovative programmes to meet the needs of today’s employers and society. The majority are offered on a part-time basis although some can be undertaken full-time for those who want more intensive study. There are exit points at postgraduate certificate and postgraduate diploma level offering flexibility in the type of award gained, depending on your circumstances and aspirations.

All programmes are modular offering even further flexibility to your studies. Research OpportunitiesThe University College has a vibrant research culture and environment, providing an individualised and highly supportive environment for postgraduate research degree students. The results of the 2008 Research Assessment Exercise clearly demonstrate the University College’s strong profile of research with work that has been rated as world-leading in Theology, Divinity and History, and English Language and Literature, and internationally excellent research in Education and Sport-Related Studies

“ As a recently appointed manager working in the third sector I have found the MA course at St Mary’s to be highly relevant and informative. The learning has great practical application whilst leaving suitable space to consider a wide range of theoretical knowledge and thinking. I would recommend the course both to those starting out in the world of charity management or to current charity managers seeking a ‘recharge’.” DavidLemon.Charity Management
