One of the aspects Fr Noel reflected on was the parable of the Prodigal Son. For many of us, in our context, it is a story of a loving father, one wayward son and one devoted son, who eventually became jealous of the father’s forgiveness towards the younger son. As parents, we can see similarities in our own lives and the lives of those near and dear to us. However, Fr Noel reminded listeners that the power of that story is in the message of Jesus for the people of his time. In context, the father of the house was matriarch. He was not to be questioned and it certainly was not to be expected that a son would ask for his inheritance and subsequently spend it all whilst the other hard working son continued with what was expected of him. Added to this, there certainly was no showing of emotion. In the telling of his story, Jesus was exemplifying the love of God through the forgiveness shown by the father in the story. Jesus was stressing that no matter what happens, forgiveness should be at the forefront of our responses to events in our lives. The father not only threw out his arms to welcome his son back, but he cried on seeing his son. We remember that when the son was at his lowest point, he also cried but was strong enough to go back to his father and seek forgiveness. When both the father and the “prodigal son” were embracing each other, the father offered a party in celebration. Jesus was really crossing many boundaries in the telling of this story. He was challenging society of that time that love and forgiveness work hand in hand. This love and forgiveness heals families, heals communities and in the end, heals society. If we take a little leave from the mantra of the Orange Sky Laundry: Love and Forgiveness (Passion) Action Happen……. … we will become co-contributors to the Vision of Jesus. Have a wonderful week. St Mary’s School Warwick Newsletter

Dear Parents and Caregivers,

Last Friday culminated Catholic Education Week for all schools in

the Diocese of Toowoomba. A gathering of Catholic staff – teaching

and non-teaching were welcomed to St Saviour’s College. One of the

guest speakers was Fr Noel Connolly SSC.

Fr Noel spoke on the Vision of Pope Francis. One of the aspects Fr

Noel reflected on was the parable of the Prodigal Son. For many of

us, in our context, it is a story of a loving father, one wayward son

and one devoted son, who eventually became jealous of the father’s

forgiveness towards the younger son. As parents, we can see

similarities in our own lives and the lives of those near and dear to

us.

However, Fr Noel reminded listeners that the power of that story is

in the message of Jesus for the people of his time. In context, the

father of the house was matriarch. He was not to be questioned and

it certainly was not to be expected that a son would ask for his

inheritance and subsequently spend it all whilst the other hard

working son continued with what was expected of him. Added to

this, there certainly was no showing of emotion.

In the telling of his story, Jesus was exemplifying the love of God

through the forgiveness shown by the father in the story. Jesus was

stressing that no matter what happens, forgiveness should be at the

forefront of our responses to events in our lives. The father not only

threw out his arms to welcome his son back, but he cried on seeing

his son. We remember that when the son was at his lowest point, he

also cried but was strong enough to go back to his father and seek

forgiveness. When both the father and the “prodigal son” were

embracing each other, the father offered a party in celebration.

Jesus was really crossing many boundaries in the telling of this

story. He was challenging society of that time that love and

forgiveness work hand in hand. This love and forgiveness heals

families, heals communities and in the end, heals society.

If we take a little leave from the mantra of the Orange Sky Laundry:

Love and Forgiveness (Passion) Action Happen…….

… we will become co-contributors to the Vision of Jesus.

Have a wonderful week. Margaret

Remember, you can use the iPads at school to make your video. It must be less than 6 seconds long. Please see Mrs Gillam, Mrs Brosnan or Mrs Joyce to have your video downloaded into a folder on the library computer (especially if you use a school iPad) or have it on a USB device. Entries must be in by Wednesday August 12. Anyone who enters receives an entry to win a book from the Book Fair.

Bookfair coming soon Scholastic Bookfair is coming to the lower campus on Thursday August 20. Keep a look out for further information.

Musical News

We have moved into the final stages of preparation for our School Musical which will be held at the Warwick Town Hall on Thursday 27 and Friday 28 August. It is very pleasing to hear that costumes are either finalised or are coming together well.

All Musical members, including members of the Junior Choir, have received a very important note today. This lists clearly for you the requirements of performers. Please pack lunch, snacks and water for the students to bring to practices. Please note that no runny food e.g. yoghurt or custard, or soft drink or juice is allowed. Sandwiches, fruit, biscuits, cheese etc. are acceptable. The children should bring their scripts for last minute prompting, even though I expect that all lines and songs are known by now.

Help is required urgently with the following: We need someone to help with lighting. The Town Hall system is great, but requires someone technical to work it. If you or anyone you know, can help with this, please contact myself or the school office as soon as possible. We also need someone to video one of the performances (or both you if are able) for us. We would also be very grateful if anyone has a peacock feather plume for Captain Hook to use as a pen that could be loaned to us. Tickets will be on sale next week. Thanks for your support. Persistence

This week at school we are spending time teaching the

students the Foundation of Persistence. We want to

teach children that when they have difficulty with some

school work or receive a low mark, they should continue

to try hard and not give up.During the week, we would

like you to discuss with your child an important idea that

helps develop Persistence especially when they receive a

result in school lower than they wanted or when they

find something they are studying hard: “If you keep trying

hard, you will achieve better results.” Provide an

example of how Persistence paid off for you.

And when you catch your child continuing to try hard on difficult work, give lots of praise (“I

knew you wouldn’t quit on that homework,” “Great effort”).

Reading This week in class, the students will once again work on the comprehension strategy ‘making connections’.

Making Connections

Description Learners make personal connections from the text with: • something in their own life (text to self) • another text (text to text) • something occurring in the world (text to world).

Example questions/statements This story reminds me of a holiday to my grandfather’s farm.

This character has the same problem that I read/saw/heard in another text. I saw a program on television that presented things described in this text. Does this remind me/you of something? Has something like this ever happened to me/you?

What This Might Look Like At Home

1. Find something that your child enjoys reading. (Choose from a variety of texts - fiction books, non-fiction books, newspaper articles, magazine articles, posters, etc). For example – Jumpers and Jazz Trees, By Timothy Crothers, 3O.

Jumpers and Jazz Trees

By Timothy Crothers, Year 3 Oldham

I liked the fishing tree because it looked really detailed and because it was made out of wool.

I did not like the teapot because it was too pinkish and was not really colourful. If I could make

a Jumpers and Jazz tree I would make it based around a farm. It would be made out of wool

and it would be colourful and I would win.

2. Read the text with your child. Depending on your child’s ability they may need you to read the text first and then have a turn themselves, they may be able to read it with some support from you or they may be able to read all the text independently.

3. Ask some questions about the text (see newsletters for ideas that should fit any text). For example – Jumpers and Jazz Trees and the ‘Making Connections’ comprehension strategy questions:

a. Where do you think this author has been? b. Can you remember seeing any of the trees that are in the recount? c. Why did the author like the fishing tree? d. What pictures does this recount create for you in your mind? e. What sort of tree would you create for the Jumpers and Jazz festival?

SPORTS NEWS Catholic Schools’ Touch and Netball Carnivals

Last Thursday, students from Years 5 and 6 travelled to Toowoomba to compete in the Catholic Schools’ Netball and Touch Football Carnival. It was a successful day and the weather was very kind to us. Some teams were competitive and some non-competitive. Everyone had a wonderful day of fun, friendship and skill development. They all enjoyed the opportunity to play with students from other Catholic Schools spread across the Diocese. We thank the teachers and parents who gave so much of their time to coach and to guide the children on the day. Congratulations to the students for the good sportsmanship they showed throughout the games and the positive behaviour they displayed.
