IAIN MUNRO 1925 - 2016
It was with deep regret that the community of Wilby and other friends joined with Iain Munro’s family
to mark his passing at a memorial service in St Mary’s Church on 9th November 2016.
Iain will be remembered as the perfect gentleman. Always immaculately turned out, courteous and
polite with a dry but keen sense of humour, he made others feel at ease and always listened carefully to
what they said. A modest man whose quiet demeanour belied his wartime experience and a career
founded on academic rigour.
Educated at one of Edinburgh’s leading independent schools, George Heriot’s School, of which he was
an immensely proud Former Pupil, Iain joined the RAF in 1942 at the age of seventeen, training in
Canada to become a bomb aimer and then navigator on the Mosquito bomber. He subsequently flew
many hazardous nightime pathfinder missions over Germany in 1944 and 1945, identifying
and illuminating targets for follow up heavy bomber raids. Following his demobilisation, Iain took a
BSc (Hons) at Edinburgh University to be followed by a Masters in Biology at Reading University.
Thus equipped he embarked, as a Fellow of the Institute of Biology, on a thirty year career as an
agronomist with ADAS the agricultural and environmental advisory service to be followed by five
years as a private consultant. Required to assess compliance with current environmental legislation
and to plan for the future, Iain’s visits to the farming community combined essential firmness and tact
with the ability to establish good working relationships with all his clients. On his retirement there
followed many happy years at the family home in Minorca before returning as planned to the UK, the
last eleven of which were spent at Highways in Wilby, where Iain was able to provide uninhibited
advice to his wife on the planning and nurturing of their garden - from his seat in the sun lounge.
Our thoughts go to Enid, his widow, children, grandchildren and great grandchildren at this time as we
mourn the passing of a well loved and much respected member of the community.
We remember his charm and soft Scottish good humour with great affection.
NEWS FROM ST. MARY’s,WILBY
From the Register of St Mary's, Wilby November 9th Thanksgiving service for Iain Munro
Wilby Church Autumn Supper The Autumn Supper held on Saturday, October 29th in aid of St. Mary's Church, Wilby was, as usual,
a festival of delights - delicious beef in ale, vegetable dishes, salads and vegetarian quiches followed
by a plethora of puddings to satisfy every taste and appetite. The Coronation Hall looked wonderful;
the white-clothed tables with pretty autumn foliage and flowers, and the newly decorated bar, a warm
soft red, with attractive lighting, established a welcoming and friendly atmosphere. What a pleasure
just to observe the talk and laughter and obvious enjoyment-village life at it's most united and diverse.
Many thanks to everyone involved, guests, cooks, helpers. £602.03 was raised for the Church.
Royal British Legion Poppy Appeal The amount raised this year from house to house collections in Wilby was £429.29.
The church collection at our Remembrance Sunday service also was given to the Poppy Appeal and
this came to £115.50. We are very grateful to Priscilla Williamson and Celia Woollatt who once again
went round the village to do the collection.
Christmas Services Our Carol Service by candlelight is on Sunday December 18th at 6.30pm. As usual we will be
having mince pies and mulled wine after the service so do please come along and join us.
On Christmas Day our service will be at 9.30am. It will be a Family Service with Holy Communion.
Drop in There will be no Drop In in December as we are taking a Christmas break.
Details about future dates will be in the next Newsletter.

NEWS FROM WILBY CEVC PRIMARY SCHOOL
Our next Open Morning is on Wednesday, December 7th. All welcome. This time the theme is Christmas! There will be a variety of activities to get involved in, including the chance to visit a free Santa’s Grotto for our younger visitors and to make/do a variety of Christmas crafts and activities. Church links Our Harvest Festival on the theme of Water this year, was well attended by parents who learnt lots more about why we should both be grateful for and preserve this precious resource. Our first Collective Worship in church was led by Reverend Burrell and the children and many parents who attended said they really enjoyed being in church for worship. Our Christmas service is on Tuesday, 20th December at 2pm in church - everyone is welcome to join our celebration.
All the fun of the fayre The Wilby Christmas Fayre is on from 11.30-2pm on Saturday 3rd December and as always, it promises to be a fun-filled event! Sporting Success Our footballers have been super stars. On Friday, 18th November we took part in an inter-schools football tournament at Hartismere High School. Despite the awful conditions the children won every match. Fantastic sporting ability and behaviour was demonstrated by every member of the team! Charity work Wilby pupils are taking part in a concert on December 4th at Spa Pavilion in Felixstowe. All proceeds from CD/DVD and ticket sale will be collected in aid of the Tearfund Charity. A big thank you to all of you who so kindly contributed towards Children in Need on Thursday. We raised a wonderful £88 for the charity. This Christmas Wilby School sent off twenty complete shoe boxes for the Samaritan's Operation Christmas Child Charity. Congratulations go to Harvey Foreman one of our Year 6 pupils, who raised over £350 by doing a sponsored swim for Stand Up To Cancer Charity. Anti-bullying week 14-18th November Our children took part in a variety of classroom based activities designed to raise awareness prevention of bullying. Parents attended a special internet safety assembly and our visiting poet will be further exploring the theme of cyber bullying in his workshops on December 22nd.
Poet in school November 22nd– free performance poetry event Friday, 25th November Stradbroke High School-6.15pm On November 22nd the brilliant international poet David Mason will be in school. David will be performing for all of the children but also, to tie in with Anti-bullying week, he will be leading drama and writing workshops for our Year 5 and 6 pupils exploring the theme ‘Let’s talk’ which incorpo-rates the idea that social media can lead to problems in communication and ultimately, bullying. Mrs Wiseman has devised the project which will be rolled out across four schools including the Year 7s at Stradbroke High School. The children will be writing and then presenting their own per-formance poetry alongside David Mason at a special ‘Let’s talk’ evening on Friday, November 25th. The event, which will feature some of David’s favourite poetry as well as the children’s original pieces, is free. Everyone is welcome to attend.

NEWS FROM WILBY PARISH COUNCIL
The Parish Council held its final scheduled meeting for the year on Wednesday, 2nd
November 2016. The following items of community interest arose.
New Councillors Council was pleased to learn that up to three residents had been approached and might
consider joining the council to fill existing vacancies. It was agreed that formal co-option
of candidates should be conditional on the presentation of a statement from the candidate
setting out their motivation, relevant experience/knowledge etc. and that such candidates
should have the opportunity to attend a council meeting before they are co-opted. This
would confirm the applicant’s interest and provide evidence of commitment.
District and County Council matters The District Council was promoting an Ageing Well Activity Programme of activities for
the over 50s. Locally this included aqua and group exercise programmes at Stradbroke
Swimming Pool (Contact 01379 384376 or see www.everyoneactive.com).
The Connecting Communities programme provided a bus link to other transport services –
book a week in advance on 01449 614271 and see www.suffolkonboard.com/cc for
additional details. The junction boxes required for superfast broadband had been installed
in Wilby and Openreach are now connecting power and joining the new fibre lines to the
existing copper network. Wilby should be offered the new service within four months.
Progress can be checked at www.homeandwork.openreach.co.uk and follow the links to
Superfast Fibre. The issue of poor mobile phone coverage in rural areas remains to be
resolved between the government and the network operators.
Highways
The damaged verge at Messuage Farm, London City Road is due to be repaired over the
next 14 weeks – some disruption will be inevitable. After many months a meeting was
finally held with the Highways department on 10 November to discuss traffic issues in
Wilby and notably those raised in the Village Survey. Following consideration of various
methods to encourage compliance with speed limits and an inspection of the road network
in the village, it was concluded that there could be merit in installing a Speed Indicator
Sign (SID) to be displayed on the Stradbroke road (B1118) and on the road from
Worlingworth/Horham. The council will formally consider whether to pursue this option
at its meeting in January 2017. It was not feasible to place a SID to encourage adherence
to the 20s Plenty zone near the school because the necessary siting criteria could not be
met. The meeting noted that the yellow restriction signs on the roadway outside the
school were due for re-painting. Further information on speed reduction and SID signs can
be found at ww.suffolkroadsafe.net .
Village Web-site Recently there have been difficulties in accessing material on the village website as the
site has been moved to a new provider, Suffolk.cloud. These initial software problems are
being resolved. The Village website is now accessed through www.wilby.suffolk.cloud
Googling Wilby Village website will lead to the new site.
Next meeting The next meeting of the Parish council will be held in the Coronation Hall at 7.30pm on
Wednesday, 11th January 2017. All are welcome to attend.

We would like to thank Kenny Mutimer and the support of Jewson’s for enabling us to
revitalise ‘Jack’s Bar’ at the Village Hall. In addition we are delighted to say that our bid for
funding for the exterior refurbishment of the hall has been approved by Mid Suffolk and will
hopefully be taking place in the late Spring early Summer of 2017.
It is with sadness that we note the passing of Iain Monro, who, along with his wife, was a supporter
of the village hall lunches. Our thoughts are with Enid and family at this time.
The Village Hall Committee would like to wish you all a very merry Christmas and look forward to
seeing you at some of the events at the hall in the New Year.

ST LAWRENCE’S CHURCH, BRUNDISH
Brundish Christmas Fair 2016 2.00 pm Saturday, 26
th November
Brundish Village Hall
By the time you read this edition, the Christmas Fair may well have come and
gone. As always, its success, (we hope) will be down to the hard work of all
those
involved in setting the Fair up and running it on the day.
Also, to those people who have donated and those people who turn up.
A great deal of thanks is owed to all these people.
Sandra Apps and David Mulrenan
Advent Carol Service 6.30 p.m. Sunday, 4th December
St. Lawrence’s Church
To mark the sense of anticipation surrounding the birth of Jesus, our church will
be bathed in candlelight and filled with the most wonderful music on the second
Sunday of Advent. Last year we were unable to have this service due to the work
which was being carried out, but this year will be something quite special, as
indeed it always is. Our choir, The Chantry Singers will be present.
Please do come and join us.

ST LAWRENCE’S CHURCH, BRUNDISH
Carols at the Crown 8 ish, Thursday, 15th December
The Brundish Crown
Lesley and Mario will be your hosts as The Chantry Singers lead the singing at this
most enjoyable and festive occasion at our much loved old pub. You don’t have to
be a good singer to enjoy this night. At least you can enjoy the lubrication! Last
year The Crown was packed to the rafters. Let’s do the same again this year!
Lessons and Carols for the Eve of Christmas 6.30 p.m. on Christmas Eve
St Lawrence’s Church
The Carol Service followed by fish and chips at The Crown is now firmly rooted in
the tradition of this village! With families travelling long distances to be together
at Christmas, youngsters coming home from university and friends meeting up in
celebration, coming to church and especially our church on Christmas Eve seems
to be the only way to mark the start of the festive season. St Lawrence’s stands as
an anchor point in the life of this village and at no time is this better recognised
than this most holy of nights. The Chantry Singers will be present, however no one
needs any help with singing at Brundish! To all those who have never been, and
especially those who are new to Brundish, please know how welcome you would
be on this and every occasion. If you are unused to worship, we will help you and
will look forward to doing so. Hope to see you.
Christmas Midnight Communion 11.30 p.m. Christmas Eve
St Lawrence’s Church
To mark the celebration of the birth of Jesus Christ, people from villages far
around unite at our sacred place of worship. Whether you have been confirmed
or not you are warmly invited to join us.
No Evensong in January
Please note that as New Year’s Day 2017 falls on a Sunday, it has been decided to
hold a Benefice Communion Service at Laxfield at 11 am. This replaces Brundish’s
normally scheduled first Sunday Evensong service.

NEWS FROM BRUNDISH Goodbye and Hello
Brundish says a fond farewell to Linda and Mark Hitchings, and their son,
Sam, after living in the village for over twenty years. Mark was a very conscien-
tious Councillor for Brundish Parish Council and a trustee for the charity which
runs the village hall. Furthermore Mark was a great help when the village hall
was saved from dereliction in the late nineties as well as coming to the rescue of
many local people when their oil-fired boilers blew up! We wish Linda, Mark
and Sam all happiness in their new home in Cookley, near Halesworth.
The Hitchings’ house in The Street is now the property of The Clarke family.
We welcome them all to Brundish and likewise hope that they will be very happy
amongst us here.
Royal British Legion Poppy Appeal. Our village’s poppy appeal co-ordinator, Diane Palmer raked the dark lanes of
Brundish last month to collect for this year’s appeal and ended up with a fantastic
£211.99. That was a generous amount for such a small place as this. Very many
thanks go to all who contributed and, of course, a big thank you to Diane.
Brundish Film – Thursday 8th December We had a splendid turnout of 46 people from Brundish and further afield to
watch Our Kind of Traitor on 10 November.
The occasional violence was offset by great locations and a soundtrack voiced by
actors whose words we could hear and understand.
British actors including Simon Callow, Virginia McKenna, Bernard Hill, Alun
Armstrong, Phil Davis, Una Stubbs and Sue Johnston feature in our final film this
year, Golden Years, to be shown on Thursday 8 December 2016. A hitherto law
-abiding retired couple feel impelled to resort to a life of crime to right what they
perceive as the injustices of old age, surrounding the loss of their pensions and
threats to local amenities. Certificate 12A, the verbal and physical comedy
delivered by the professional cast is sure to provide a light hearted diversion in
the pressured run up to Christmas. To add to the festivities we will be offering
mulled wine and mince pies in addition to our normal fare. Doors open as usual
at 7 for 7.30 pm, tickets payable at the door (£5 for adults and £4.50 for Under
18s). To reserve your place please call Priscilla Williamson on 01379 388034 or
email [email protected] - it is important to book!.
The Christmas film is a regular event in the Brundish calendar and we look
forward to seeing you on what is always a very jolly evening.
Thereafter we will have a short break before our next film show
in February 2017.
