CARE FOR CREATION - COFFEE: What are good choices for our parish-

es and our homes? Consider these alternatives to stimulate discussion. (1)

Where does the coffee come from: it may come from areas that involve the

destruction of rainforests, or from Fair Trade sources that ensures respect

for the earth and fair wages for workers (2) How is it made: in non-

recyclable coffee pods or in machines that allow for easy composting of

coffee grinds with no landfill waste (3) How is it served: in reusable mugs

or in Styrofoam cups that pollute and never decompose in landfill. Many

people drink coffee every day. Let us consider its impact on creation. Info:

Dear Friends,

I want to continue my reflections on the power of the Easter season. It is full of amazing stories of personal conversion. I think the call

to conversion was a strength of Fr. Bob’s preaching when he was with us. I think that call to conversion is a high value for us here at

St. Mary’s.

As I’ve reflected on God’s call for our parish, I’ve come to think that our belief in God’s call to conversion needs a deepened under-

standing. What has been a strength in the parish is that many people have had powerful, personal experiences of God: his love, mer-

cy, healing, etc. Fr. Bob used to speak of the importance of this kind of experience in his own life. Go to YouTube and search for The

Lord’s Dynamic. Fr. Bob tells the story about how his faith moved from something cultural to more of an intellectual conviction and –

after 20 years in the priesthood – to a profound personal experience of the Holy Spirit.

Where I believe we need a deepened understanding of conversion is by understanding how those powerful personal experiences are

supposed to lead to transformation in our lives. John Paul II spoke to this reality in 1981. He spoke of the need for a “continuous, per-

manent conversion” that begins with the right interior dispositions but is “brought about concretely in steps which lead us ever forward.”

Our growth in discipleship happens from more than personal experience (our interior disposition). It comes from taking concrete steps

forward. John Paul II speaks of progressively integrating both God’s gifts and what the reception of “His definitive and absolute love”

demands of us.

Therefore an educational growth process is necessary, in order that individual believers, families and peoples,

even civilization itself, by beginning from what they have already received of the mystery of Christ, may patiently

be led forward, arriving at a richer understanding and a fuller integration of this mystery in their lives.

It is precisely for this reason that we are offering you a map for your personal discipleship (Love God, Love your neighbour, Give your

life to Jesus, Grow as a disciple and Go in mission). Although it may begin with a personal experience it is lived out by growing,

through patiently taking the necessary concrete steps toward true transformation.

Come Holy Spirit!

Fr. Sean
