Our 2020 Sacred Heart/
St. Mary's Sledding Party was a great success! Lots of fun
was had by all on the sledding
hills, enjoying our chili potluck
in the lodge, and most
important, building relationships
with our fellow parishioners.
Our Church is our extended
home and our parish family is
like extended relation. Pray
together, play together. Thank
you to all who came and to all
who helped make this a great
success! LouAnn Schulfer
Dear Friends in Christ,
On Wednesday, the Church begins the great penitential
season of Lent with the celebration of Ash Wednesday.
Just as Jesus fasted for forty days and forty nights, so
too the Christian, in imitation of Our Lord, fasts and
makes sacrifices for forty days prior to Easter. The Lenten Season has three
great “pillars” that differentiates it from the other liturgical seasons: prayer,
fasting, and almsgiving. We need all three of these pillars to have a good
Lent—each separate pillar builds on the others to strengthen us in our holy
lives.
The Lenten pillar of prayer can be practiced in many different ways: through
the Stations of the Cross, attending daily Mass, or spending time in adoration
of the Blessed Sacrament. You may also want to read and pray with the seven
penitential psalms: psalms 6, 32, 38, 51, 102, 130, and 143.
The Lenten pillar of almsgiving means supporting the
Church and our neighbor financially, as well as with
our time and talents. Almsgiving is not always about
money. St. Leo the Great tells us: Those who are
unequal in their capacity to give can be equal in the
love with their hearts.
The final Lenten pillar is fasting. You might ask the
question of “why must we fast?” The first reason is the
obvious desire to imitate Christ as he fasted for forty
days and forty nights. There is another reason why fasting is so important,
however. Growth in holiness starts by putting the lower faculties (i.e., the
bodily desires of the human person) under the control of the higher powers of
the soul. Thus, the bodily desires (for food and drink, for example) must be
“ordered under” the higher powers of the soul, the intellect and will.
The Code of Canon Law (canons 1249–1253) requires fasting only on Ash
Wednesday and Good Friday. Complete abstinence from meat is required on
Ash Wednesday and on all Fridays of Lent. Fasting means eating only one full
meal a day, with the allowance of two smaller meals (called collations) that
together do not equal the full meal. Liquids are allowed at any time, but no
solid food should be consumed between meals. Fasting is required for those
aged 18–59 and abstinence is required for those aged 14 and older. If possible,
the fast on Good Friday is continued until the Easter Vigil (on Holy Saturday
night) as the “paschal fast” to honor the suffering and death of the Lord Jesus,
and to prepare ourselves to share more fully, and to celebrate more readily, his
Resurrection.
What constitutes abstinence from meat? Lenten abstinence means abstaining
from eating any meat that comes from animals that live on land or in the air
(chickens, turkeys, cows, sheep, pigs, ducks, etc.). Any type of fish,
amphibian, reptile, and/or shellfish are permitted. Abstinence does not prohibit
eggs, milk, cheese, and other condiments such as gelatin, even if taken from
animals.

"This year is the 150th anniversary of St. Joseph being proclaimed the patron
saint of the Universal Church. We would like to offer the opportunity to make
a consecration (privately or as a parish) to St. Joseph. Fr. Calloway, MIC, has
written a book called "Consecration to St. Joseph", a 33 day program dedicated
to the life and wonders of our spiritual father, St. Joseph, Universal patron of
the Church and the Terror of Demons. Starts Sunday, March 29 and ends,
April 30. Consecration will take place May 1st at St. Mary's.
If you would like to purchase your own copy of the book, the cost will be
$15.00. Orders and payments need to be in the parish office by March 15th.
PICNIC NOTES: Thanks to everyone who attended our picnic meeting. There was a great turn out with many great suggestions. There will be no catered dinner this year, because of the high cost per plate. 13 catering businesses were contacted. So plan B: expansion of our concession stand. Added to our menu: Chicken/gravy sandwiches. The Bake Sale will provide single servings of baked goods for sale. Rainbow Snow will be outside the arena. Additional tents, tables and chairs will be available for those eating. Also, the front of the arena will have extra seating. To help sell pop and water, it was decided to have someone take 2 wagons with filled coolers going around the park. Discussion to change placement of selling basket & large raffle tickets, and pull tabs. It was voted that the money amount for the Large Raffle should be $3,500. Donations are now being accepted. Deadline March 15th. Call Eunice 715-592-4175. Donation sheets for prizes used for the basket raffles or silent auction are available in the Church entrance. We thank everyone for supporting the largest fundraiser of our parish! God Bless All, Eunice Zwicki, Chair
