The ASCENSION of the LORD 16th/17thMay 2015 Year B MINISTRY IN THE CHURCH This is a term that has been misunderstood by some people as a term reserved just for the ordained clergy or for some special people in the church. This is a very wrong conception to have because ministry is about all of us! Ministry is “the action of a person of faith in Jesus Christ who seeks to assist the mission of the Church and the proclamation of the gospel by offering gifts and talents for the practise of worship and/ or prayer, or in deeds of service, catechetical instruction, or hospitality.” This means that by virtue of our baptism, we all are called to ministry in one way or the other. We are called to use our gifts and talents for the service of God and the good of the Church. The Second Vatican Council did a very good job to reinstate the notion of ministry as ‘service’ rather than ecclesiastical status (to help clear that confusion). So my dear friends, all the faithful (which means You and I), by Baptism and Confirmation are called to take an active responsibility for the community and mission of the church, because we participate in the mission of Christ, who was himself the minister of God’s presence and purpose in the world. It is very necessary that we realise that ministry is not something reserved for only a few people. There is always that tendency to think that some ministry is not for me because am not ‘good enough’ or ‘not worthy’. The question we should all ask ourselves is, who is worthy? There is also the tendency to think that our help is not needed because the people that are doing them now are very good at it and enjoy doing it by themselves. That is a very wrong conception to have because we are shying away from our baptismal responsibility. We all together are the church. No particular human being owns the church (not even the priest!). We all need to get involved in the mission of the Church, to continue to make Christ known in the world. We have so many ministries in our parishes (proclaiming the word of God, Music, Extraordinary Ministers of the Holy Communion, Hospitality, Sacristy among others), Which one do you think God is calling you to? The time to make that decision is now. Just contact the parish office and you are in. No big deal (just a bit of formation/training). This is OUR thing! Fortunately, Evangelisation Brisbane and Liturgy Brisbane will be sending an awesome team to come out to our deanery (precisely to St Mary’s) to offer formation for Liturgical ministers (both current and intending). This means all those who are already involved in ministry in the Church at the moment (no matter what it is), and those who would like to get involved in ministries in the Church. This formation will be over three sessions. The first session which will be on the 29 th of May (7-9pm), is a very good one to come to because it will give us an overview of Liturgy and Ministry. The second session will be a practical session (mainly for the ministers of the Word and Extraordinary Ministers of Holy Communion). This will be on the 2 nd of June (7-9pm). Then the third session will be in our local parishes (at our own time) to apply what we have learnt to our particular circumstances. This is a great opportunity my dear friends to equip ourselves well for living out our baptismal calling through ministry. In a special way this weekend, we thank Fr Leo Burke for sharing his priestly ministry with us over the past three months. We will really miss you. May our good Lord continue to bless you. Remember in your Prayers

REFLECTIVE PRAYER OPPORTUNITIES IN THE PARISH:

Monday afternoon from 5.30 to 6.30 Lectio Divina held in the Parish Centre. This form of prayer is the experiential hearing of the Word of God. Lectio is listening to the presence of God in the Word. The Word is the Divine Presence. (Bible Study follows Lectio Divina)

Friday morning from 7.45am to 8.30am. – Christian Mediation in the Parish Centre. What a wonderful way to begin the day! To become aware of the presence of Christ as we sit in silent prayer.

Saturday morning from 11.00am to 12noon – Adoration and Benediction held in St Mary’s Church. Adoration and Benediction of the Blessed Sacrament is a very old devotion in our Church, but one which provides the opportunity to sit quietly in the presence of the Blessed Sacrament as it is exposed on the Altar in a Monstrance. Hymns and prayer form part of this traditional practice.
