St Mary’s Catholic Church Greenville, South Carolina @ @ @ @ @ 19 July 2020 Dear Friends in Christ, Steadfast and stouthearted. In these days of coronavirus uncertainty, we should each strive to remain steadfast and stouthearted, not because we are brave stoics but because we are faithful disciples of the Lord Jesus. Even though SARS-CoV-2 has been abroad in the world for seven months now, there is still a great deal we do not yet know about how this virus spreads and the disease it causes in those who are infected by it. And in the gap created by our ignorance, the combination of fear and our never-ending and increasingly bitter political disputes quickly creates a toxic environment of mistrust and recrimination, all of which can make it difficult to stay informed without being inflamed. And so we should remain steadfast and stouthearted. A couple of weeks ago I wrote to you and said that the number of new infections had nowhere to go but up, and that has proven to be the case. But I also said that the key numbers to watch are the percentage of hospital beds occupied and the number of Covid-19 patients who require acute care beds, and on both scores the pandemic in South Carolina remains manageable. SARS-CoV-2 will be a part of our lives for many months to come, but except for the people in high risk groups, the virus should not interrupt normal patterns of life. We must find creative ways to conduct business, to educate our children, to work and play, and to worship God. And here at St Mary’s we are proceeding on all of those fronts. The parish office is open on our regular Summer schedule, and school will open as planned in mid-August. All parish groups are welcome to meet if they wish to, and everyone in the parish is welcome to attend the Mass of their choice. Of course, in every case we are taking the obvious precautions to do whatever we can to prevent the careless transmission of the virus, but no matter what we do it will continue to spread until we have a vaccine or the general population reaches herd immunity. But at this point, no one knows when either of those things will arrive, and so we must remain steadfast and stouthearted. The best means we have for now of slowing the spread of the virus are already well known: wash and purify our hands often, keep our distance from others, stay home when possible, and wear a mask in public places. But in addition to those exterior disciplines, we also need interior discipline to remain calm and kind and not to surrender to fear or anger. To be steadfast is to remain firmly fixed in one place, and for Christians that place is the Sacred Heart of Christ. To be stouthearted is to be courageous in the face of all suffering and strife, and because we are firmly fixed in the Sacred Heart of Christ, we have the courage to be tranquil in the midst of any storm, including the passing challenge of this virus. So, together as one family we move forward while remaining steadfast and stouthearted in the Lord! Father Newman

Dear Friends in Christ,

Steadfast and stouthearted.

SAn Introduction to Catholicism

What is Catholicism?

Is the Catholic Faith in the Bible?

Did the Lord Jesus found the Catholic Church?

Our course called An Introduction to Catholicism is designed to answer

Christianity and the shape of Christian faith and life within the

Catholic Church.

The classes meet on Wednesday evenings from 6.30 to 7.30 pm from

Labor Day through Easter, and all are invited to come and discover what

it means to be a disciple of the Lord Jesus in His holy Catholic Church.

Director of Catechesis and Congregational Care

St Mary’s has an opening for a new Director of Catechesis and Congregational Care. The full time staff member will work under the supervision of our Pastoral Associate, T.J. Nielsen, to coordinate the catechesis and sacramental preparation of the children in our parish who do not attend St Mary’s School. This person will also be responsible for several forms of service to the wider parish and provide staff support to both Fr Newman and T.J.

The preferred candidate for the position of Director of Catechesis and Congregational Care will be a practicing Catholic in full communion with the Church who has at least an undergraduate degree or equivalent professional training and relevant experience in a parish or other appropriate setting. This position is full time and benefits eligible, and all interested parties should send a letter and resume to Fr Newman at [email protected].

Welcome NewcomerWe welcome the following new member to our parish family:

Mr Mark Vogel.

Streaming Mass in Gallivan Hall Anyone who wants to attend Mass at St Mary’s is welcome to do so, and Gallivan Hall will be open during every weekend Mass in July to provide plenty of room for everyone. Mass will be clearly visible and audible in Gallivan Hall thanks to our cinema screen and sound system, and the rest rooms to the left of the stage will be open. If you arrive for Mass and find that the church is already full to our limited capacity, then please go to Gallivan Hall. Or, if you just prefer a little more distance from your neighbors, you can go directly to Gallivan Hall.

Those who attend Mass in Gallivan Hall will be welcome to receive Holy Communion either by walking over to the church during the Communion Rite or by coming immediately after Mass and waiting in the center aisle for the priest or deacon to begin a second distribution of Communion. These two options will allow for the reception of Holy Communion without a crowd forming in the church.

Please note that every other pew will remain closed to allow for social distancing, and we continue to encourage strongly the wearing of a face mask and careful attention to hand washing and purifying to help reduce the spread of the virus. Our cry rooms remain closed because proper distancing is not possible in those spaces, and for now Confessions are being heard in the cry rooms on Saturday from 3.30 - 4.30 pm. The Wednesday afternoon Holy Hour is suspended for July and will return on 5 August.

Finally, the dispensation from the Sunday obligation remains in force, which means that no one is required to attend Mass, even though all must find a way to keep the Lord’s Day holy, and the best way to do that is by joining in the sacred liturgy live-streamed on Sunday morning at 11 am. If you are at risk of the severe symptoms possible from exposure to SARS-CoV-2, then please stay home and join us in prayer remotely.

Registration is free but required.

Event Description: Critics say the Founding of the American Republic was a poison pill with a time-release formula. Its principles are responsible for the country’s moral and social disintegration because they were based on the Enlightenment falsehood of radical individual autonomy. Join Robert Reilly as he reveals the underlying drama,

declaring the Founding principles to be “not guilty”.

Baptism ClassPrior to having a child baptized at Saint Mary’s, you must have been registered in the parish for at least six months, attending Sunday Mass each week, using the stewardship envelopes, and participating in the

life of the parish. Baptisms take place on Saturdays at 6.15 pm after the 5.00 pm Mass. Attending a Baptism Preparation Class is required and may be attended prior to the birth of your child. The next class is scheduled for Monday 24 August at 6.30 pm in Sacred Heart Hall. Pre-registration in the church office is required. For questions, contact T.J. Nielsen at 864.679.4114 or [email protected].
