Monsignor Frank’s Message
Dear parishioners of St. Mary Star of the Sea and all visitors,
We welcome our spiritual leader, Bishop Steve Lowe, to our Parish this weekend. It is a delight to have Bishop Steve with us to celebrate our Weekend Masses and to bestow the Sacraments of Confirmation and 1st Holy Communion upon 39 of our young parishioners. We hope Bishop Steve enjoys his time with us.
Congratulations to all those who will be receiving Confirmation and 1st Holy Communion this weekend. You bring us all great joy. Know that we as a Parish have been praying that this will be a day which you will always look back on with delight. You are now fully initiated into our wonderful Catholic Church. Welcome! Please come and join us at Mass regularly and so grow closer and closer to Jesus!
My heartfelt thanks to Karyn Sadler, Sharyn Tilley, Helen McGuigan and Sam Steele for your dedication in preparing our children for their big day. This year it was made very complex with the Covid-19 restrictions having to be obeyed. But our children are well ready. Well done!
Next Saturday is the Feast of Mary’s Assumption. It is a day when we all try to come to Mass because it is the Patronal Feast day of New Zealand and Mary’s biggest Feast day. Mass will be at 9.00am. In the afternoon at 3.00pm you are warmly invited to participate in a National Coast to Coast Rosary in honour of Our Lady. Our Marist Laity Group will be hosting it. A cuppa will follow.
Please note that the evening Mass on Saturday will be of the 20th Sunday of Ordinary Time.
This coming Saturday (August 15th) our evening Mass will be at 5.00pm. This time for the Mass will continue at least until the begin-ning of Daylight Saving when an assessment will be made on whether or not to return to 6.00pm for the Summer.
On Tuesday at 9.40am Campion College will be having a full-school Mass in our Church in honour of St. Mary McKillop.
Last Tuesday a large group of mainly Filipinos gathered in the Parish Centre to listen to an address by Mr. Paulo Garcia MP. Mr Garcia is the first Filipino MP in the NZ Parliament. He was passionate in encouraging our Filipino friends to enrol and to vote in the coming election. He spoke strongly on the importance that we all vote against Euthanasia and the legalisation of Cannabis. Mr Garcia attended Mass on Wednesday before returning to Auckland. ……………... continued next page

……. Our Mass on Wednesday was a full-school Mass for St. Mary’s and was made very special by the Reception into the Church of Mrs Sarah Aperahama, the Deputy Principal of St. Mary’s School, and of the School Secretary, Mrs Caroline Puketapu. It was a truly joy-filled Mass. The children’s singing was a delight!
On Saturday we had a number of Baptisms: Esther and Eric Abin by our Bishop. Hailey Currie, James Gavin, Charlie Buttimore and Ruby Gavin were baptised earlier in the day. Welcome children into your Parish family. Congratulations to all the parents!
On Friday, Requiem Mass was celebrated for Dr. Bruce Morrison who lived most of his life in Gisborne and was a very faithful parishioner. Lots from our Parish came under his very skilled care. Our sympathy goes out to Dawn, his wife, and to all of the family. May he rest in peace. Kind Wishes Mons Frank
